Genesis 2:15 The Bible tells us that in the beginning God planted a garden. Then God told the first man to till it and keep it. So Adam had the twofold job of both tilling this garden to produce food for himself and also to keep the garden by taking good care of it. God also gives us this challenge and responsibility today. How do we both till the garden of this earth to provide for us today while also keeping the garden in good shape so that it can provide for future generations? Our float in the Sandwich parade this year had a very large ball depicting the earth and also the message: This is our Father s world. Yes, this is our Father s world and not our own. We are to use it as God would want and not to only selfishly use it for our own benefit. We are to till it and keep it. In our Vacation Bible School later this month, our children will learn ways to take good care of God s world. The theme will be: RENEW the Green VBS. My father planted hundreds of trees on our farm and at our church, school, and local cemeteries. I also like to plant trees. It has often been said that a person who plants trees does so primarily for the next generation. Taking good care of the earth today is how we show love for our children, grandchildren, and all future generations. Not taking good care of the earth today would show our indifference and lack of concern for future generations. There are many ways to take care of God s creation. Some are easy and simple. Others are difficult and complex. It is very important that we care for God s earth for the sake of the people who will come after us. What can you do to till it and keep it? In Christ,

They are residing in Leland. Jake brings an eight year old son, Dominic, to the new family. We wish them God s blessings as they begin their new life together. DEATHS LYNN NEUENDORF, member of Salem s confirmation class of 1974, passed away at her home in Sandwich on June 21. Lynn had been confined to her home for many years. A private remembrance will be held at a later date. ROBERT ABBEY JR, long time member of Salem, passed away on June 24 at Symphony of Orchard Valley, where he had been a resident for the past few months.. As of this time there are no service plans that we are aware of. Please remember their families and their friends in your prayers. 3 JULY COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS The July 10 th council meeting opened with devotions and prayer. Pastor Wayne gave his report. The minutes of the previous council meeting were approved. The council discussed: 1) expressing appreciation to Scott and Leigh Kossman for their many years of being our youth leaders; 2) the good float that we had in the Sandwich parade this year; 3) postponing any major kitchen renovations until our financial situation improves; and 4) that our proposed constitution has not yet been received back from the synod office. The calendar and worship attendance were reviewed. Reports from committees were given. The May financial reports were approved. For May, the General Fund had an income of $15,752 and expenses of $20,421 and the Capital Fund had an income of $7,195 and expenses of $6,342. The meeting was adjourned. 4 SALEM HANDCHIME ENSEMBLE has begun a new season. The group rehearses on Monday evenings at 6:00 pm. New members are encouraged. Men, women and young people are welcome. Neither previous experience nor ability to read music is required. Please come and give it a try. COMMUNITY FELLOWSHIP FEAST ALL ARE WELCOME! TUESDAY, JULY 24 4:30-6:00 pm UNITED CHURCH OF SANDWICH 512 Lions Road Salem will be providing vegetable dishes for this feast. Please sign-up in the narthex if you can share a dish. These should be delivered to the host church by 4:00 pm on feast day. These should be in a disposable container. WORSHIP COMMITTEE will host their annual ICE CREAM SOCIAL on Sunday, July 22 beginning right after worship (replacing Coffee Fellowship & Learning Circle). You are invited to create your own sundae in the church yard, weather permitting. ALL-COMERS CHOIR Sunday, July 29 10:30 am: All singers of ALL ages are invited. NO experience necessary We will learn an anthem to sing on August 5. TIME FOR LWR SCHOOL KITS School supplies are beginning to show up in the stores for back-to-school specials. Now is the time to help the Sunday School with their annual collection for Lutheran World Relief. Clip this list and take it with you the next time you shop, as the needs are quite specific. We can only use the items on this list: *70-sheet notebook; *30-centimeter ruler (or a ruler with centimeters on one side & inches on the other), *handheld pencil sharpener; *blunt scissors, *unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers, *blue or black ballpoint pens (no gel ink); *box of 16 or 24 crayons, *2½ eraser. Supplies are all packed in cloth backpacks. Pat Whitten has generously made many backpacks, but we need many more. If you are willing to do some simple sewing, we can provide fabric and patterns. Please check in the office.
