1 The Messenger 2017 St. Matthew Lutheran Ithaca, OH Worshiping God, Growing in Faith, Serving Neighbors--near and far From July 9 through September 3, we will enjoy a sermon series on Spiritual Transformation. We want to be different, but we don't want to change. Our attempts at spiritual formation and growth are consistently sabotaged by our surface efforts that never quite get to the root of the problem. We think we know what we're supposed to do, but we're not quite sure who we're supposed to be on the other side of transformation. This series is an approach to spiritual transformation that focuses less on measuring how much time we are spending on spiritual inputs--such as Bible study and prayer--and more on measuring who we are becoming in Christ. July 9 Me to You Ruth 1:11-18 July 16 Seen to Unseen 2 Kings 6:8-23 July 23 Slave to Child Luke 15:11-24 July a.m. VBS Celebration Service at Grace UMC (None at SMLC) August 6 Ask to Listen Mark 4:21-25 August 13 Sheep to Shepherd John 21:15-19 August 20 Me to We 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 August 27 Now What Hebrews 5:12-27 September 3 Learning to Fly 2 Peter 1:3-10
2 From the Pastor Summertime is the time of year that we get to relax a little bit and maybe visit with friends and family that we don t often get to. From family reunions and family vacations, to picnics and some rest and relaxation at the beach, the lake, or the pool, summertime for a lot of us is a muchneeded break that gives a brief moment to re-energize before the second half of the year. I believe that this time is very important for all of us, as it provides us with a time of rest that is deserved and necessary for our spiritual, emotional, and physical health. In our current culture, where the demands of life, work, sports, and other activities can cause us to burn the candle at both ends, having a healthy Sabbath practice can be a challenge. In fact, many of us are so caught up in life that we are unable to or choose to not take a Sabbath at all. Jesus regularly talked about and demonstrated the need for rest. He respected the Sabbath and would draw away from the crowd with just His closest friends and family when He knew His body and soul needed time to rejuvenate. My prayer for our church during this summer break, is that we all are able to take that much-needed rest and that we set time to reconnect with our loved ones, so that we are prepared for the ministry that God has in store for us in the months ahead. Genesis 2:3 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. Peace and Blessings, Travis 2
