2017 (Pastor s Note: A lot has happened since the last newsletter: The violence in Charlottesville; schools are now in session; hurricane Harvey has devastated Texas and Louisiana; and the Lay Leadership team is looking at leadership opportunities for members of the church for the upcoming year. If you would like to help in reaching out in any of these areas of interest, please let me know? We have ministries teams in place waiting for your support.) Church growth does not happen in a vacuum but growth must begin with prayer and hard work. Do you remember the first time you visited this church? Did you walk in not knowing anybody? Did you encounter unknown faces, music, and habits? What made you feel welcome? What brought you back? Since you received this newsletter you most likely worshipped with us; probably more than once. Some of you are longtime members. Many have recently started to worship and serve with us. Others are in the process of checking things out. Each of us was at one time a visitor. Continued on page 2
We are a congregation built upon honest relationships with God and each other not pretense or false piety. Because we know we are sinners saved by grace we seek to extend that grace towards others. Each person participates and contributes as they are able. People are involved rather than spectators a family rather than an audience. The concerns and joys of each person are shared by the others. Our greatest coordinated efforts are to serve others in Jesus name rather than ourselves. These are marks of the body of Christ. God s call is for us to invite people to take part in what God is doing in and through us. Signs, websites, special events, and follow-up programs all have their place but if love, relationships, and participation are distinguishing marks of this congregation then love, personal relationships, and involvement are the ways that we will grow and bear fruit for the kingdom of God. Each member of the congregation reaching out to their neighbors and coworkers is far more effective than the most costly advertising campaigns. Personal contact and care by the people of the church towards visitors and newcomers are far more effective than fancy brochures and unwanted mail stuffed in a mailbox. Let us continue to dedicate ourselves to reaching out to those God brings in our doors on Sunday mornings. Here are a couple of ways you can help. When you see someone you don t know introduce yourself. If you forgot someone s name ask. Try sitting in different places so you can meet different people. Invite a visitor or someone you do not know to sit with you. Don t ask, Is this your first time? Instead, just introduce yourself and say that you are glad that they are here. Say hello to a few people you don t know before spending time with your good friends. If someone wants to help let them! If you can t think of anything for them to do then invite them to do what you were doing. For bonus points, try contacting someone you recently met during the week instead of waiting until Sunday. Churches don t grow by accident and neither do relationships. I rejoice that Jesus left his comforts and privileges to reach out to us. I pray that we will continue to demonstrate this love to others. Robert

Begins this. The first meal will be served at 6:00 PM 6:30 PM; made by the Young Adults Group. *Please do not forget to sign your children in and out every Wednesday night.*
The preschool held its Open House on August 28th, and 29th. We enjoyed meeting our new parents and their children and seeing our returning students and their families. We will begin classes on Wednesday, September 6, 2017; we have a lot of fun-filled activities planned for the upcoming school year. We are looking forward to a great year. We are blessed this year to have all of our classes full, with others on the waiting list. We had to throw out some of our toys on the playground due to them being damaged. If you have any playground equipment in good condition that you would like to sell at a reasonable price or get rid of, please keep the preschool program in mind. We do ask for everyone to help us in keeping the playground safe and fun for everyone, The playground is designed for children under 12, and we do ask that all children be supervised when they are on the playground.. We appreciate your help in this matter. A special thanks to Susan Fairhurst for donating new books to the children! September Birthdays! 11 Happy Sunday! Enjoyed catching up with everyone. Thank you for your prayers during the recent passing of my great aunt and hospitalization of my grandfather. Please continue to keep Karlene's family in your prayers. Happy Birthday on Wednesday this week to Diane!! Below is information for Children's Sunday School in September. There are two different plans, one for Labor Day Sunday (9/3) and one for the remaining Sundays of the month. Overview: Memory Verse: "I will write my laws on their hearts and minds. I will be their God, and they will be my people." Jeremiah 31:33b (CEV) Song: Ten Commandments to the tune of "Flintstones" (a cappella) [Cindy & Janie, let me know if you think slides would be helpful to display.] Plan for 9/3: 1. Meet in sanctuary for opening song & introduction of memory verse. Announce Wonderful Wednesday's Kick Off. 2. Go to Children's Worship Center or Nursery with Nate, Chelsea, & all available teachers and shepards for Drama Workshop. 3. Shepards, pick up printouts of the bible background from Nate & Chelsea. I left copies of these with teachers today. Plan for 9/10, 9/17, 9/24: 1. Meet in the sanctuary for opening song, story review, and introduction of memory verse. 2. Remind about Wonderful Wednesday's. 3. Split up for Group Rotations: a. Cooking (Diane Webb): Commandment Cakes & Red Sea Sippers with Fortunetellers - Children will cut up and decorate sections of pound cake to help them remember each commandment. Then, they will enjoy them while drinking Red Sea sippers (similar to strawberry milk). b. Art (Karlene Dalton): Ten Commandments Accordion Craft - Children will transform popsicle sticks into an accordion where they record the Ten Commandments. c. Games (Candi Iroler): Ten Commandments in Candyland, Ten Pin Commandments, In/Not in Hula Ring - Students will play a modified version of the board game Candyland, an adaptation of bowling, and a jumping game with hula hoops to help them review the Ten Commandments. Schedule (Nate & Chelsea, correct me if I've messed up groups. I think this is how we split up in August after Promotion Sunday. Pre-K/K (Katie Carter): Art, Cooking, Games Grades 1-3 (Lori Craig): Games, Art, Cooking Grades 4-5 (Brian Craig, Susan Clark): Cooking, Games, Art
YOUTH I hope that everyone is off to a quick start of the school year. I know it has been a whirlwind for me. Just wanted to give you all a quick update on youth. We are starting back next Wednesday 9/6/17 at 6:30pm (doors will open at 6pm)! We will have pizza and drinks. If you can bring a little side or desert to kick things off. Some may be wondering why we are not selling drinks at the flea market. Last year we had a hard time getting youth there for all of the time slots so we are going to try another fundraiser this year in place of the flea market. We will attempt the flea market again NEXT year though. Mark your calendars for Jan. 19th- 21st. This is the date for Rez 18!! More information will be out soon about that. Devanie and I can not wait to get youth started this year! See you all on the 6th of Sept.
