1 Volume No. 17 Issue No. 6 June, 2009 A Call to Prayer We have just recently spent 2 days with Terry Teykl and heard him talk about prayer and its benefits. Benefits not just concerning what we get through prayer but what God accomplishes through our prayers. It was an outstanding time and if you missed it, let s talk. I have been seeking God in recent weeks and even months about what His work for us to do in Hillsville might be. I have prayed and kept my ears open and tried to be sensitive to what it is He wants us to do. I finally heard from Him this morning. I remember back to when we went with the youth to Macon last year and we were so impacted by the folks at Christ Chapel that we came back with the vision for Out Of The Box. It was obviously a vision that God gave us. We have stayed busy working with this new ministry for the past 8 months. I remember many things about the church there that impacted me but one of the strongest was their Call to Prayer during the week. One or more days a week they would come to Christ Chapel and have a prayer time, as staff and anyone who wished would come. I was impacted by that, because God hears our prayer and He answers. This morning my friend Dan Waits from Christ Chapel sent out a facebook message about their prayer time and where God was leading in his life and it hit me right between the spiritual eyes. I literally said, What is wrong with me?!? What is wrong with me? One of the greatest impacts in Macon with Christ Chapel was their intentional Call to Prayer. Why didn t I see that sooner? Why have we not been gathering at OOTB and praying for our Youth in Carroll, Galax, and Grayson? It took a lot of seeking and a lot of wondering if we were supposed to be doing one thing or another, and nothing felt right. This feels right. There Are Greater Things Still To Come! We have a calling, right here in at the main campus and in Downtown Hillsville. We are called to impact the lives of youth in a special way Downtown. We have to first make a Call to Prayer a priority. Here is what I am going to do. I will be at Out Of The Box on Tuesday mornings at 8:15 until about 9:15 or 9:30, starting Tuesday, May 26th. I invite anyone who desires to come. There is no agenda except to pray for Youth in this area, our individual ministries, and other needs concerning the impact that God wants us to have on youth. Feel free to come and use the place to pray for anything that you desire. The coffee is free, you can bring your laptop to journal, or send notes to others and let them know that you are praying for them or you can use the computers at OOTB. Whatever your desire, just come and help us pray. Greater things are still to be done in Carroll County, Galax and Grayson! Let s make a difference. Thank you, Christ Chapel. Thank you Dan Waits. Thank you First Hillsville. But, Thank you most of all, Jesus Christ You are why we are here! Ronnie G. Collins Associate Pastor First United Methodist Church Hillsville The Messenger is a publication from First United Methodist Church, Hillsville, Virginia

6 What s Going on with Missions and Outreach? Global Outreach Leadership Seminar, Part II In last month s newsletter we gave an overview of some of the highlights from the Global Outreach Leadership Seminar that was held on March 27-28, 2009 at Pulaski First UMC. We would like to share more about the seminar material, specifically about what it means to be a go to church instead of a come to church. The key issue in moving from a come to to go to church is: How and where are we to encounter lost people? We must consider changing the Church s practice of ministry from maintenance to mission. First, consider the distinction between mission and missions. Our seminar leaders said that Mission refers to everything God has done to save and transform humanity and all creation. It also by extension includes in a general way the Church s outreach to the world. Missions refers especially to what Christ-followers do (through both words and deeds) to share the Good News of Jesus among people who do not know Christ, and particularly in the context of cross-cultural ministry. Missions IS the mission of the Church and should be its core curriculum. Think about what is the focus of FUMC. Do we have an inward focus or an outward focus? We are in a maintenance mode if we have an inward focus on ourselves, our property, and our resources. To change to a mission mode, we must change to an outward focus on others rather than ourselves, on people rather than property, and on God s resources rather than our resources. Are we a come to church or a go to church? Come to churches invite others to come, focus of the found, and their members are busy in the church. Go to churches follow Jesus command to GO, focus on the Lost, and their members are in mission in the world. Consider what percentage we are go to and what percentage we are come to. Our goal should be to move toward becoming more of a go to church. Remember that very few Lost are inside the church, and Jesus said GO and make disciples. Another way of looking at change: the Church s practice of ministry from only professionals to all believers. Only professionals ministry is when the pastor does the work of ministry, the pastor invests time in doing ministry, and a limited number of members are involved. All believers ministry is when laity does the work of ministry, the pastor invests time in equipping saints, and every member is involved. The key issue in moving from only professionals to all believers is Who does the work of mission and ministry?... hired staff or laity?... what percentage is engaged in ministry? Finally, the Church should change from practicing Missions as a Program of the Church to Missions as a Priority of the Church, i.e., a Missional Heart. There should be no terminal events in the life of the Church; instead, Missions should be year round in the life of the Church, inclusive of all groups/programs of the Church. Next month we will address the following questions: (1) WHERE is God calling you to go?, (2) WHO is God calling you to reach?, (3) HOW can you reach them?, and (4) WITH WHOM can you partner? Ed & June Howard, Co-Chairs Missions and Outreach Remember! Your support is always needed for Open Table. Cakes, volunteer drivers, and monetary gifts are always welcome! Open Table is held on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at the Hillsville Presbyterian Church on Main Street (U.S. Route 52). We Methodists are responsible for Open Table on June 24th. For more information, please contact Lora Terry at or Betty Ridge at Thank you Wednesday Wonders for all the delicious meals you ve prepared for us and all the many volunteer hours of labor you ve put in! The love you brought with you each Wednesday when you came to prepare those wonderful meals was felt by all who tasted the food. You have touched us all, and we want you to know that you are appreciated.

9 The Wytheville District United Methodist Women raised over $11,000 for a new cabin! A generous board member has given $30,000 to replace an entire cabin! Two new cabins are to be finished by the end of this year. Sixty (60) % of the campaign goal of $750,000 has been reached. Even in these tougher economic times, your generosity with God s abundance is overwhelming! Family Ministry Department The Family Ministry Team for the month of June, 2009, will be led by Harold & Mildred Nutter. Members of that team are as follows: Joe & Laura Berry; Zula Coleman; Jared & April Iroler; Greg & Mary Beth Montgomery; Dennis & Sue Ward; Lucille Newman; Bonnie Alderman; Bob Welsh; Richard & Diane Webb; Greg & Lori Huff; and Christine Eva. Please pray for this team as they go about their obligations during the month, for they have a very real potential to help the church grow, not only in numbers, but also in spiritual health. This team is instrumental in nurturing current membership as well, and all aspects of their responsibilities are important. If you know of individuals that might like or need a visit, please let one of the team members know. May 7, 2009 To: The Church Family As a single parent working hard to take care of my sons, your kindness with your gift helped me with being able to get to work and get paid to see that my sons have the things they need. 10 Sunday School Superlatives! Joyful noise---that is what you will hear coming from the TODDLER classroom each Sunday morning. The shepherdess for the little lambs is Karlene Dalton and she seems to be everywhere at once--whether at the craft table drawing pictures or on the colorful rug singing and dancing with a new DVD, Karlene manages to keep this lively class on task. As she says, We have an absolutely awesome bunch of kids in our class, and I am blessed to have Mary Ward to help me on a regular basis. We usually have six or seven children in attendance and two to four adults. Misty Collins, mother of twenty-two month old Samuel, describes the class this way: Karlene is so faithful in preparing for her lesson, even though the little ones don t always cooperate since they enjoy playing more than anything. Samuel likes the praise time and getting to play with the other kids. You can see why the adults enjoy volunteering to assist when it is so much fun to hear these children learning Bible stories and Bible verses. Karlene continues, We are looking into a new curriculum for the fall that looks like it will be wonderful. It will cut down on the prep time and let us concentrate on what is important, namely, helping the children get to know more about God. So if you are a parent who would like to attend an adult Sunday School Class, but didn t know that a class is also available for your young child, age infant to pre-kindergarten, please check out the TODDLER S room. There you and your child will find experienced teachers, adult supervision and creative learning. Come and see.
