1 The Messenger The Season of Lent begins Wednesday, March 1, 2017 and this is a Season of the Year for Transformation. It is a time for Sacred Change. Historical Perspective: Originating in the fourth century of the church, the season of Lent spans 40 weekdays beginning on Ash Wednesday and climaxing during Holy Week with Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday), Good Friday, and concluding the Saturday before Easter. Originally, Lent was the time of preparation for those who were to be baptized, a time of concentrated study and prayer before their baptism at the Easter Vigil. But since these new members were to be received into a living community of Faith, the entire community was called to preparation. This was also the time when those who had been separated from the Church would prepare to rejoin the community. Lent is marked by a time of prayer and preparation to celebrate Easter. Since Sundays celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, the six Sundays that occur during Lent are not counted as part of the 40 days of Lent and are referred to as the Sundays IN Lent. The number 40 is connected with many biblical events, but especially with the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness preparing for His ministry by facing the temptations that could lead him to abandon his mission and calling. Christians today use this period of time for introspection, self examination, and repentance. It is also a time of prayer and sacrifice. Lent is a season or time to place ourselves before God. Lent is a time to confess our total inadequacy before God. Lent is a time to strip ourselves bare of all pretenses. Lent is a time to come before God in dust and ashes. Lent is a time to empty ourselves of our false pride. Lent is a time to draw closer to the Lord. Lent is also a time and season of sacrifice. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent. Continued on page 2.. First United Methodist Church Website: hillsvillefumc.com Facebook: facebook.com/fumchillsville Phone: Street Address: 225 Fulcher Street, Hillsville VA 24343
2 Practical Application: The Season of Lent is a time for drawing closer to the Lord and a time of sacrifice. How can you draw closer to the Lord during this season? Early Morning Meditation, Evening Meditation, Commitment to Bible Study, Prayer Group, Establishing a Prayer Partner, Concentrated Bible Study. What can you sacrifice? Television, Sweets, Coffee, Pop, Meat, Facebook, Twitter, Electronics, Smoking, Shopping, Spending, etc. During this Lenten Season, I want to issue an invitation for us to be a Praying Church. I want to invite us to Fast and Pray. I want to invite you to seek God's face daily (pray for family, self, neighbor, church, pastor, friends, co-workers, Cities of Hillsville and Galax, Countries of Carroll, Grayson, and Floyd, State of Virginia, those who rule over us just to mention a few). Pray for your Church family daily (as I suppose some of you currently do). In addition, I want to invite us to fast and pray every Wednesday until 6:00 PM during our Bible Study. Pat and I believe that you are a Great People and a Great Church. However, I believe that we can be GREATER. Jesus said "greater works" shall we do. We can become greater through a time of intentional prayer and fasting. Types of Fasts: Full Fast for one day of the week no food or drink. Regular Fast for one day of the week you can drink, but not eat. Daniel Fast eat no meat, no sweets, and no bread; drink plenty of water and juice. Eat fruits and vegetables. Scriptures for Fasting: Matthew 6:16-18; Matthew 9:14-15; Luke 18:9-14 Daniel 10:2-3; Joel 2:15-16; Jonah 3:5-10; Acts 27:33-37 Thursday, April 13, 2017 we will gather for Maundy Thursday Service and on Easter Morning, April 16 at 10:30 a.m., we worship in a great spirit of celebration. Let us gather remembering Jesus' sacrifice. Let us gather having been transformed by the season of sacrifice; a renewed spirit and great JOY! In ministry together, Robert

It was such a surprise and I needed it! Thank you so much again! Love, Emma Reitzel
15 This month we have some exciting things planned for the children. We are having Hat Day; the children can wear their favorite hat to school. Dr. Seuss birthday is on March 2nd, please watch for Thing 1 and Thing 2. We always have a fun time reading Dr. Seuss books especially this day. Our upcoming Registration will be April 3rd for the school year. If you know someone that could benefit from a positive preschool experience please tell them about us!. We would also like to thank Mr. & Mrs. Lathan Umphlett for their generous donation. This has allowed us to purchase much needed supplies for the preschool. They have always been so generous each year donating to the preschool in honor of their daughter Gayle Harvey. Numerous children have been able to receive the preschool scholarship due to this sweet couple. As the weather is getting warmer, we would appreciate your help in maintaining the safety of our playground. We seem to have had a lot of our big toys getting broken recently. Once our playground equipment is broken, we can no longer use it per Virginia Laws. We would appreciate your assistance in supervising the children on the playground as well as the older children. Our playground is set up for younger children and is something they truly enjoy on warm days. The preschool works hard and spends a lot of money to maintain a safe and fun environment for the children; your help in this matter is greatly appreciated!! Yours in Preschool Paulette B.
