Be doers of the word, and not merely hearers! James 1:22 Advent has come and gone...christmas has come and gone...we're in the middle of Epiphany...Lent is just around the corner...and we'll be looking forward to Easter! Wow, from the manger to the cross in just a few short weeks. It's worth spending some time thinking about that, as we here at Zion start this process of looking to the future and wondering what God has in mind for us. What does Zion look like in Ferguson, MO in 2017? Are we ready to look to God for guidance and direction? As I'm writing this, the reality of our time here on earth becomes so real as I think of the last month and three funerals of our dearly departed members who are now with Jesus in heaven: Grace Behle, Harold Oellermann, and Jeannette Senter. Members leaving us and no new ones coming in our door. I think God is calling us to put our trust in him and figure out the future. By now most of you have learned that I'm a the glass is full person. There is nothing we can't do with the help of God. We just need to define what the future is, again with His help. We need your help! We need your ideas! Are you interested in: looking at how we might reach out to the Ferguson community? being involved in Events that reach out to our membership, CDC families, and the surrounding community? helping to rewrite our constitution and bylaws? helping to develop a new website? being part of the property maintenance team? being part of the team that assist members of our congregation who need our help? Anyone with Human Resources experience, see/call me. See anyone on the Council if you are interested in being part of any of the above. God is good and full of GRACE! Blessings, Larry Lemke, PMA Interim Pastor 2

News from the CDC February at the CDC is when we celebrate our presidents and learn more about our country. And to remind each of us that this is the greatest country in the world. On Tuesday, February 14th we will have valentine parties and share valentines with each other. Our preschool kids will visit Oak Knoll Nursing Home to take them valentines also. Each Wednesday, Miss Vanessa comes and tells stories from the bible and teaches some songs. Then on Thursday Miss Amy from the library comes and reads to the kids. The children really enjoy both teachers. Don't forget to sign up to play Trivia on March 11 th. The doors open at 6:00pm and the game begins at 7:00pm. It is a lot of fun and helps support the summer program. The teachers and kids are starting to think about making our plans for the summer months. A few of the best field trips are Build A Bear, Grants Farm, swimming, and just getting to go to the local parks to picnic and enjoy being outdoors. Thank you for always caring about the kids and teachers at the CDC. Hugs! ~ Sue Dunham CDC Director 3

The next Voter's Meeting is on March 5, It will take place in the Upper Room immediately following worship. Please plan to attend this very important meeting. Call for Favorite Hymns Have you ever turned to the person in the pew next to you and asked, When is the last time we sang that hymn I love so much? As the new music director, I look forward to introducing some of my favorite hymns that you haven't learned yet. But I also look forward to learning which hymns are meaningful to you. Starting February 8th and for several weeks after, there will be a hymn suggestion box in the narthex before and after the service. Fill out a slip of paper and share your favorites, old and new, with me. I'll do my best to incorporate all of them in our worship this year. 5 JESUS IS CALLING! A Message From Your Church Council Zion has many opportunities for members, and on-the-job training is included. Please prayerfully consider how you can participate in Zion's future. Here are a few notes from our council work session in January with opportunities for you: The council has committed to improve communications with the Town of Ferguson: Johnnie Tucker will coordinate monthly ads and press releases for the Ferguson Times. Council is also interested in participating at the Ferguson Farmer's Market, particularly prior to Zion events such as Vacation Bible School. Council members will also meet with Ferguson officials for feedback on this topic. We are going to do some rearranging: The Nursery will be relocated to the Cry Room. The Sunday School will relocate to the current Nursery location. We are going to put a computer for congregational use in the PRC/Archives room. We are looking at storage and decluttering everywhere. Norma Wolz is coordinating the Sunday School/Nursery move. Janet Schaper is coordinating the computer setup. Richard Schademann has volunteered to be property manager, and is getting together a list of projects and needs. Pr. Lemke will conduct Bible Class on Sundays at 11am. We will have a social hour between church and Bible Class. Jason Martin and Paul Herrmann are coordinating rewriting our constitution and bylaws. Larry Lemke is contacting someone for advice on changing/updating our website. The goal is to get a simpler site that can be updated by our administrative assistant. Larry Lemke and Andrea Martin are contacting the firm that provided the church microphones to determine what we need to do to get rid of the static and problems we have with the system. Jason Martin will write up procedures and other help information for the ushers. Council has more ideas for Zion's future, and we are very interested in your input. You can volunteer by talking to any council member. Look for an updated Time and Talents survey soon. Janet Schaper, Council President 5

Zion's Council is Teaming Up Council has committed to working with Humanitri and Walking Together to help one of our families in their journey out of homelessness. Humanitri will provide counseling and rental assistance for 6+ months. Walking Together will provide mentors for the family. Zion will provide some rental assistance and general support for the family. We have an URGENT NEED for a rental home or apartment for the family. If you have any leads, please contact Janet Schaper. We will also need furniture and household items, you can contact Janet if you can help with those needs. Together We're Better Gift Cards Every Sunday after church you have the opportunity to purchase gift cards. We have cards from nearly 30 vendors available every week. If you plan ahead, another 25 vendors are available by placing an order. Would you or someone you know enjoy going out to eat? Applebee's, Cannoli's, TGI Friday, Pasta House, IHOP, or Panera might be just the ticket! Maybe you need groceries? How about Dierbergs, Schnucks, or Shop N' Save? Too busy to cook? How about Papa John's Pizza or Imo's? Jack-in-the-Box or Wendy's? Does your vehicle need fuel? We have cards from Exxon/Mobil and Shell, and also BP if you order ahead. Does your home office or kitchen need something? Bed, Bath, & Beyond, Kohl's, or Walmart might work. Is there a major home improvement project? You can order Lowe's, Home Depot, or Best Buy. Going hunting? Order Cabella's. You get the idea! So stop by the table in the foyer and take a look at the wide variety available. The purchase of every card generates a little income for Zion, and every little bit helps. Thanks! Raffle-raiser Beginning Sunday, January 29th, Zion will begin selling raffle tickets to help raise money for various funds in need. Tickets will be $1 each or 5 for $4. The drawings will take place at the Fellowship Hour held in The Upper Room after the Sunday Service, typically on the last Sunday of the month. The winner will get to choose from a variety of $10 Together We're Better gift cards mentioned in the article above. The first Sunday, all the proceeds will go to the Good Samaritan Fund (formally known as the Elder's Fund). Raffle tickets will be sold in The Upper Room at the start of Fellowship Hour. 6

Feed My Starving Children The congregations that participate in Congregations in Service (CIS) are joining together on July 15, 2017 to host a Mobile Food Pack at Atonement Lutheran Church in Florissant. We need volunteers to help plan the food pack prior to the event as well as volunteers the day of the pack. CIS is responsible for raising $23,760 to pay for the 108,000 meals we will pack that day as well as other expenses. Please consider serving as a volunteer on one of the committees. Make sure to save the date of July 15 th on your calendar so you're free to help that day! Be on the lookout for more details to come. Feed My Starving Children is a Christian non-profit committed to feeding God's starving children hungry in body and spirit. The approach is simple: children and adults hand-pack meals specifically formulated for malnourished children, and those meals are shipped to distributing partners around the world. 99.6% of the meals packed reach their intended destination. No government agencies are involved in the distribution of the meals. If you have any questions or are interested in helping, please talk to Stacey Miller or Pam Statler. Come on, people of Zion, let's reach out together with others and make a difference in the world! Community Service Saturday This year CIS is helping three worthwhile organizations on Community Service Saturday: Camp Wartburg, Jamestown New Horizons, and Humanitri. Save the morning and early afternoon of April 29 th on your calendars so you can be involved in one of these projects. Camp Wartburg is warmly welcoming us back this year to help clean up outside areas of the camp, clear trails, rake leaves, mulch, and plant gardens. Indoor help at the camp includes helping to prepare the dining hall for the annual chicken dinner fundraiser the next day. Jamestown New Horizons is an organization that provides therapeutic horse riding for children with disabilities. This project will entail cleaning and sprucing up the grounds. The Humanitri project will be to help clean up the houses they own that are used by their clients. We'll continue praying for volunteers and lovely weather as April 29 th draws near! 7
