The Three Solas (Latin Word for Only ) What was the foundation of Martin Luther's belief that ultimately sparked the Reformation? The answer is found in three very simple words: Only by Grace Alone Only by Faith Alone Only by Scripture Alone Now, if you google Three Solas, you will also find that others added on to the three, and it became five, and then even today there are those who have added two more for a total of seven, so I guess we could ultimately add the entire Bible. You've heard me many times quote Ephesians 2:8-10, 8For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9not the result of works, so that no one may boast. 10For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life. It took Luther a long time to get to this discovery on his part, but it clearly became the foundation for the reformation movement that he started when he posted the 95 Theses on the door of the church. Most of those 95 theses have to do with the indulgences within the 2

church at that time. Luther's definition of how one got to heaven was all wrapped up in Ephesians 2:8-9, not so much with Ephesians 2:10. It's taken us Lutherans awhile to get the whole picture of our faith and how we live it out but I believe the answer is the entirety of Ephesians 2:8-10. I know you are just dying to find out what those other two Solas that others added on are: Christ Alone Glory of God Alone I think now you can see why I said earlier that we could just keep adding on...and adding on...and adding on! For me, I would be more than happy to compromise and have just four Solas: Only by Christ Alone Only by Grace Alone Only by Faith Alone Only by Scripture Alone But then, I'm a far cry from Luther, so I'm really just happy that we remember: Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Scripture Alone. So, as I said to you on my first Sunday as your Interim Pastor, The foundation of my faith is: John 3:16; Ephesians 2:8-10; John 15 (our relationships with God, one another, and the world); and Luke 15 (if lost people matter to God, they ought to matter to us). This 500th year anniversary of the Reformation is a time to think about what the foundation of our faith is really about. What is it that becomes the basis for how we live our lives and how we make decisions? God is good and full of GRACE! Blessings, Larry 3

October at the CDC We have had a wonderful start of the school year. All the kids have adjusted to life in their new rooms beautifully. The teachers have also adjusted to their new students. Ms. Amy from the Ferguson Library has continued to read to the children every Thursday. The kids really enjoy all of her stories and songs. Nurse Betty from the Health Department came on September 22 nd to talk to the children about proper hand washing. The children got to watch a film about proper hand-washing and the importance of it. Then the children were able to demonstrate what they had learned by washing their hands in the sinks. The children also were taught how to properly wash their hands with hand sanitizer. Coming up in October, the kids will have the chance to enjoy Theis Farm's Pumpkinland. The children will enjoy a wagon ride, corn maze, and the Pumpkinland play area, see farm animals, and receive an activity book and a 1-2 lb pumpkin. It is always a fun time for all! At the end of October, the children will have a chance to guess how many candy corns are in a jar. The winner will receive all the candy corn in the jar and share them with their class. We will also have our Halloween parties on Friday, October 27th. On this day, we will visit Oak Knoll and parade around in our cute costumes for their residents. ~ Sue Dunham CDC Director 4

October Worship at the Negwers' Anniversaries 17th Paul & Carole Herrmann October Birthdays 2nd 11th 14th 19th 24th 25th The Negwers have graciously invited all of Zion to a special worship service and fellowship at their property in Lebanon, IL on October 7th at 11:30am. This will be a full worship service, outdoors (weather permitting), with communion. Afterward, they will provide a lunch and Larry will lead a discussion about Zion's future and what lies ahead. We ask that you please let us know by October 1 st if you plan on attending. For those needing rides, meet at Zion at 10:15am and we'll carpool over. Dorothy Kaiser Jayce Tucker Norma Wolz Linn Moore Cindy Vogelsang Janet Schaper Gail Voss Kristina Oswald If you cannot make it to worship on Saturday, that's okay. We will still have a Sunday service in The Upper Room on October 8th. We hope to see as many of you there as possible! Reformation Sunday Everyone is Welcome Women's Guild There will be a showing of Rick Steves' Luther and the Reformation film in The Upper Room on Thursday, October 5th. Rick Steves is a well-known Lutheran travel guru and can be seen frequently on PBS, so you are in for a real treat! For those attending the By Heart discussion sessions that morning, please plan to stay and join us (lunch will be provided) and the movie will begin at 1:00pm and lasts about an hour. Hope to you all there! The 500th Anniversary of the Reformation is quickly approaching. To celebrate, Zion will have a formal church service, including a processional and full choir. By Heart If you have not made it yet to any of the By Heart classes, there's still time to join in. Each week, we read a chapter before the lesson (books are still available) and discuss it together in groups. To summarize, the book breaks down the different parts of the Small Catechism and goes into depth on the meaning behind each part. Many long time Christian believers have admitted that they are now seeing things (for example: the Ten Commandments) in a new way! Come experience the change for yourself! St. Stephen's Goal Update We are growing ever closer to reaching our goal of 100 tubes of toothpaste! Way to go, Zion! Our next goal is collecting 100 toothbrushes, so please keep that in mind. Thank you! 5

Say Goodbye to TWB A Very Big Thank You to all who supported Zion through the purchase of TWB (Together We re Better) gift cards. Things have changed since we first began the program. Gift cards in varying denominations to a wide variety of stores are readily available. The profit margin on any card is quite small and it could take some time before the charges for having an order shipped to us were recouped. Shop N Save, which had gift cards, was the closest grocery store in Ferguson until recently when Schnucks moved into that location. Schnucks does not have gift cards but they have an escrip program. Having an escrip card registered to Zion is all you need. Just shop at any Schnucks store and have your escrip card scanned before you pay. At the end of each month, Schnucks sends Zion a check for a percentage of all purchases attributed to Zion s cardholders. Pam Statler, our treasurer, reports we receive $25$35 each month. Therefore, the council determined at a recent meeting that is was no longer advisable to continue the TWB gift cards. We will continue to sell the remainder of the inventory until all the cards are gone. There will be no discounts. If you don t have a Schnucks escrip card please see Sue Dunham, Pam Statler or Gail Voss. Thanks again to everyone who purchased cards and helped to sell them each Sunday! Meeting Minutes If you would like a copy of the monthly Council Meeting Minutes or Voter's Meeting Minutes, copies will be available in the Narthex or Coat Room to pick-up. You can also contact Andi at office@zionferguson.com to get them ed to you. 6

Youth Overnighter Six Flags Fright Fest Some of Zion's youth will be attending the Festival of Sharing's 2nd Annual Youth Overnighter on Friday, October 13th at Immanuel UCC. They will be learning about ways they can Share the Hope in our community, there will be team building exercises, games, and snacks, and they will also help set up for the next day's Sharefest activities! It should be a very fun experience for all. The city of Ferguson has a teen trip planned to go to Six Flags on Saturday, October 21st from 11am-11pm. Residents of Ferguson in grades 6 th-11th can sign-up by October 7th for only $15 (additional money is needed for food and drink). For more information on the teen program, please call Ferguson Recreation at (314) All trips are chaperoned by Recreation staff National Youth Gathering Trick-or-Treat Next summer, Zion hopes to send its youth to Houston, TX to the 2018 National Youth Gathering! This event only happens once every 3 years for a week of faith formation. Through days spent in interactive learning, worship, Bible study, service and fellowship, teens grow in faith and are challenged and inspired to live their faith in their daily lives. Parents: bring your little heroes, princesses, and even ghouls out for a safe and fun evening at the Ferguson Community Center where the Parks and Recreation staff will be providing an indoor oasis of themed activities and treats on Wednesday, October 31st from 6pm8pm. This event is FREE for all families. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Cindy Panosh (314)

Luther and Music III When we initiated the German mass, everyone wanted it; now it is all the same to you, whether it is in German or Latin. You say I have bought five yoke of oxen. The songs have been composed and are sung for your sake so that you can sing them here and at home, but you sit here like blocks of wood. Therefore I beg you, teach these songs to your children and sing them yourselves at the same time, as Paul teaches. From this you see who is a Christian and what is to be expected of him. Martin Luther, Sermon for the First Sunday in Advent 1526 Martin Luther was eager to have the entire mass sung in German. This was a fine mission, yet the practical implementation was another matter entirely. Unexpected challenges arose that made many of Luther s musical ambitions to be cast aside during his lifetime. Some were fulfilled by later generations, but others were not. For example, do we sing the Creed every Sunday? Many of the challenges came from the idea of a sung German liturgy for Luther s services. Luther did not want the German translations sung to the original Latin melodies because the important stresses in the text would not match the stresses in the tunes. He envisioned a flowering of new compositions, but found himself having to continually urge his followers to create these works. Often he eventually took on the labors himself. Luther s German mass parts (Glory to God, Holy, Lamb of God) were composed well after the first editions of the hymnal. Another challenge arose from the congregation themselves. Luther envisioned a sung entrance hymn; the congregation would usually only arrive in time for the sermon. The easiest place for the congregation to join in song was during the hymn to follow the sermon and during the distribution of communion. Even with better-known tunes such as Gott der Vater wohn uns bei (God the Father, Be Our Stay, LBW 308) and Nun bitten wir den Heiligen Geist (To God the Holy Spirit Let us Pray, LBW 317) relied on the support of the choir. These songs were based on popular devotional songs from the decades before Luther s reforms. How could newly composed works fare any better? One solution was several smaller collections of hymns, such as the Enchiridion, a page of which is shown above. These were printed for wide public distribution and were intended for use in homes and meetings. The prefaces urged the faithful to carry the songs with them at all times. Maybe the first generation would be lost, but future generations could be taught to realize the dreams Luther had for robust congregational singing in the service of the Word. T. Elizabeth Cason 10
