1 C North Carolina State Council U F A Message from the State Deputy Brothers All, P I am looking forward to being with all of the Grand Knights and Deputy Grand Knights at our 90th State Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. This is the time of the year that we celebrate with our awards that are given out to the councils that have earned such awards. I was pleased with the response of all of the programs that were received by the State Advocate. This makes a statement that the state of North Carolina councils are working with our Churches, Communities, Families, Youth, Council, Pro-Life and Membership. This year s award luncheon will be attended by the council members and their wives. This will give our ladies the opportunity to understand and appreciate all of the hard work done by the councils for your favorite programs. The membership awards will be many; however, we still have work to be done before our fiscal year ends on June 30th. I am requesting that each council in this state recruit three new members in honor of our Blessed Mother, Mary Queen of the Knights. Since May is the month devoted to our Blessed Mother, I am sure she will intervene and assist each council to recruit three new members in the month of May. Remember a few councils will be unable to recruit three new members so I am asking that the other councils step up and recruit at least one new member for that council that is unable to respond to the Blessed Mother in the month of May. Msgr. Richard Bellow will be celebrating the Mass at our convention and is looking forward to meeting all of the Brother Knights attending the convention. As the convention draws near, I must thank our State Officers, Regional and District Deputies, Directors and Staff. Most of all, a huge thank you to our over 15,000 Knights and their Families for making a difference in the lives of many in the great state of North Carolina. Vivat Jesus, Dave Jones, State Deputy 1

9 Vivat Jesus, I must say how extremely surprised I was as I reviewed the most recent reports from the councils that described in detail some of the many activities that their councils performed throughout the year. It was very impressive, and gives more just hope, that there is a lot, rather than just a few of you who actually read the monthly Tar Heel Knight. I was also very interested in the articles that were submitted, so much so, that it proved very difficult to extract the top dog in each of the divisions. So who were the winners in each division? Alas, I have such a poor memory that you will have to wait till the convention to find out. I do, however, congratulate all of you who submitted their reports to me, all of you are winners. I am reminded of a gentleman that I often read about, who was born, and lived, just a bit before my time. I would like to share some noteworthy facts about him, and not tell you who it is, maybe you can figure it out before my article comes to a close. He came from a family that was, in their own right, of some nobility, which for most part, allowed him to attend some of the best schools in Europe. While attending a renowned university, by the sea, he displayed an amazing ability in speech and logic. Influenced by one of the religious orders, he sought to enter that order, but was met with much resistance from his family, who tried to dissuade him from leading a life of poverty. Realizing that his virtue for this religious life was to strong, his family allowed him to continue on his path to Rome, where he took his vows and went on to Cologne to complete a portion of his studies. He received his bachelor of theology in Paris and gained a reputation as an influential speaker. So much so, that he successfully argued a case before the Pope, to excuse the members of his order from taking an oath with which they did not agree with, but had been mandated by the University. His natural gift and passion for theology helped fashion the theological language of the Catholic Church. Have we concluded who this scholar was? Why did I choose to write this article about and around him? Because it takes courage to follow our calling in spite of what today s conventional wisdom might say about it. It can also be difficult to follow this calling, especially if the aspirations and hopes of those around you are in direct contradiction to the path that you have chosen for yourself. For the many of us who decided that part of our call to service, was hold an office and lead, we face this difficult decision all the time. Always with a wonder if whether or not our leadership is just adequate, or are we breaking new ground and giving inspiration to others to follow and seek to lead also. I know that whenever I am faced with certain difficult decisions, I ask God to give me the courage to what it is in my heart, and to keep me always focused and on track in my decision. I pray for grace and understanding so that I may deal, with sensitivity, everyone s point of view. If you have already deduced who this wonderful, but passionate person is, then me with the answer, otherwise, I shall reveal his identity in my next to last article. I regret that I shall not be able to attend, because it is in direct conflict with my studies, and so I send out my accolades now to all. Until next month. Vivat Jesus and God Bless. Lenny Quemuel, Church Director 9

10 Brother Knights, Father Michael J. McGivney Center for Life Fulfilling Our Promise First and foremost, I would like to thank all of the individual knights that have heard this message and have answered the call. We received $15,000 in pledges from several individual knights last month. We know that many of you are processing pledges through your councils in preparation for the State convention. Over $60,000 in pledges that are in various stages of approval at the council level!!! On behalf of Room at the Inn and the women and children your pledge will save, we thank you! Brothers, our Church and our Country desperately need to see an example of what Catholic UNITY can do. In UNITY, with 123 councils pledging and every individual KNIGHT saying YES will WE will build the LARGEST and FIRST, Catholic, college-based residential maternity and after-care center in the NATION. In UNITY, we will help save thousands of at risk mother s and their babies from the brutality of Abortion In UNITY, we will inspire Knights in other states across this nation to act in defense of life in just the same way In UNITY, we will inspire Catholics to renew their efforts in defense of the unborn In UNITY, we will set an example for the world to follow. We will wade into the abortion fight on the side of LIFE. In UNITY, we will show our country that our Faith and our Order are not marginalized in the culture war but are a force to be reckoned with! In UNITY, we will renew the face of the country. That all starts with you and your pledge or your donation to support this ministry. Please act now.. in UNITY with your Brother Knights and councils across the state. In UNITY Build this Center in honor of or founder. Please contact Tom Mathis, a Knight of Council 770 and a member of the Board of Directors of Room At The Inn, to discuss the best strategy for your council to fulfill our promise. 12 Community Worthy Brothers, Vivat Jesus! We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 In just two short weeks we will gather in Charlotte for our 90th Anniversary State Convention. Of course we will attend Mass together, and enjoy each others company as we attend meetings, a luncheon and banquet. We will also gather together and recognize the good works of our Brother Knights and their families. These good works, more specifically the Service Program Entry Forms outlining Council activities, are in my thoughts as I write this column. Recently I had the privilege of reading the nearly fifty Service Program Entry Forms that pertain to Council Community activities. This is nearly double the amount of entries that were submitted for the first reporting period of this Fraternal Year. That is an excellent reflection on the good work being done by our Councils statewide. Further, I found this reporting period to be very challenging. Challenging because of the outstanding quality of reports that were filed; and challenging due to the outstanding quality of activities through which Brother Knights and their families served their communities. The bottom line here is that all of our good works of Charity, our volunteering to help others in our Community, affords us the opportunity to be a part of those things that work for the glory of God. We are all called according to his purpose, called to offer our talents to help our neighbors. Regularly, as Catholics and as Knights, you recognize and answer the call to work for good as those who love God. In closing I must say thank you for answering God s call, and thank you for allowing me the opportunity to know of your good works. It is my honor to be among the members of such wonderful, caring, Christ centered family. It is my honor to call you all Brother Knights. GOD bless, take care Vince Higgins Community Director communitydirector@kofcnc.org vincehiggins@triad.rr.com mobile 12

13 NEWS RELEASE May 4, 2010 Knights of Columbus membership tops 1.8 Million (NEW HAVEN, CT) - The Knights of Columbus passed a significant milestone on April 30, 2010, when its membership exceeded 1.8 million. At the end of the last day of April, the official tally of Knights of Columbus around the world stood at 1,800,445. "Achieving this milestone in membership is a testament to the high regard in which the Knights of Columbus is held among Catholic men everywhere," Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said. "We offer a unique opportunity to serve our church and our communities as one of the most active service organizations anywhere in the world. We truly offer the 'experience of a lifetime,' to join brother Knights in a common effort to become better fathers, better husbands, better citizens and better Catholics, together with the opportunity to provide financial protection for their families." Membership in the Knights of Columbus grew from 1.7 million to 1.8 million in less than five years (59 months), and continues a growth trend in which the number of Knights has grown every year since Moreover, membership has grown in all but four years since In the United States, jurisdictions adding the largest number of new members were Texas, California, Florida, Michigan and Illinois, which together accounted for 15,506 new members recruited since the beginning of the current fraternal year on July 1, Those five states accounted for more than one-third of the 45,180 new US members. In Canada, jurisdictions in Quebec and Ontario together recruited 4,640 new members, more than 70 percent of the 6,469 new Canadian members. In the Philippines, Luzon led all jurisdictions with 7,669 new members recruited, fully onehalf of all new members recruited there. In Mexico, the Mexico South jurisdiction recruited 515 new members, more than one-third of all new members recruited there. The Order's newest jurisdiction, Poland, also grew briskly, recruiting 291 new members and increasing its membership by more than one-third in less than a year. The Dominican Republic added 221 new members, representing growth of twelve percent in less than a year. Over the past ten months, the Knights of Columbus has recruited 70,310 new members worldwide, and councils have two more months to recruit new members before the end of the fraternal year on June 30. A final tally of Knights of Columbus membership for the fraternal year will be announced in July. The number of new members recruited will be offset by deaths and withdrawals, and thus net growth in membership will be slightly lower. 13

17 Worthy Sir Knights and Brothers All, Vivat Jesus! Once again we have celebrated the Risen Christ and go about preparing for spring and summer. Let us not forget to be thankful constantly that we, as Catholics, should remind ourselves daily of the sacrifice Our Lord made for us and truly make an effort to be like Him. We were all given new life through His crucifixion and rising. Remember to thank Him and speak with Him as often as possible. During these trying times of high unemployment and uncertainty, prayer can be a great method of consolation if you believe in Him. We all have a duty and opportunity as well as the privilege of going to the polls on Tuesday, May 5 th, to vote. Exercise that privilege, no matter what your political conviction may be. Many men and women have fought for our right to do this. Don t let their suffering and sacrifices be in vain. On Saturday, April 24 th, a Regional Exemplification was held in Waynesville, NC, at which our numbers grew with the addition of 45 new Sir Knights. It was truly an outstanding Exemplification and I would like to thank the Exemplars, Father Carl Kaltreider, Faithful Friar of Assembly 3001, the officers and members of Assembly 3001 and all other Sir Knights and their Ladies who assisted as well as the District Team in making this Exemplification a success. Father Kaltreider became an Exemplar on Saturday morning to fulfill the role of the Friar and did a magnificent job. I also extend my deepest thank you to Father Lawrence LoMonaco, pastor of Saint John the Evangelist parish in Waynesville for offering the use of the parish campus for this exemplification. I believe we used every bit of space Father had to offer, with the exception of the rectory. Father LoMonaco was also the Honoree for this Exemplification. It is now time to start recruiting for our next Exemplification which will be held on November 6 th, 2010, at the Renaissance Charlotte Suites Hotel, Charlotte, NC. Detailed information concerning costs for the Ladies Luncheon, Banquet, etc. will be forthcoming in the months ahead. Candidates fees remain the same at $70 per candidate, to include his baldric, pin, certificate and one banquet ticket. I hope to put a great deal of the necessary information for this event on the State Web site within the near future. This hotel is new and rather large, therefore, I am asking that we try to have a good sized class. Also, give serious consideration to budgeting for an ad as well as a donation to the Host Assembly to assist them in defraying the cost of the hospitality suite. Remember, There ain t nuttin free!. Finally, some reminders about forms coming due: To Be A Patriot Submissions (Form TBP-1) were due 4/30/10. I have received none. I must have them before 5/10, no exceptions! Annual Assembly Audit Report (Form 1315) due 6/30/10. Mail to Supreme, with copies to the Vice Supreme Master and Master Report of Officers Chosen for the Term (Form 186) due 7/1/10 God Bless you all, District Master SK Robert J. Bob Grabasky, PSD 17

Honduras is not one of the countries currently served by our Order. Padre Ivis may hold the distinction of being the first Knight in Honduras. San Francisco de Asis Parish, located in the mountains of southwest Honduras, is made up of 72 churches, many of which are accessible only by burro or by foot. Padre Ivis is responsible for 40 to 50,000 parishioners. He is the only priest in his parish, so most of the parishioners only have Mass occasionally. This is Padre Ivis first trip to the United States and we were honored to make him a member of our council! Greg Decker, Program Director Wilmington Council 1074, Knights of Columbus On March 20, over 60 men became third degree members of the order at Fr. H. Charles Mulholland Council 7186 Apex.
