1 C North Carolina State Council June 2009 Volume 32 - No. 12 Tar Heel Knight U F My Brothers and Friends, June 2009 Volume 32 - No. 12 State Deputy Message The 89 th North Carolina State Convention is in the books. The comments were many, most were positive. My gratitude goes out to Lud Hartung the Convention Chairman and the dozens of Knights and their families that made the meeting a success. To me, it was one of the top 5 in the state. This is my last time to address you as your servant, the State Deputy. We have together accomplished much, both at a state level and down home in your council. We have followed the wisdom of Mahatma Gandhi We must be the change we wish to see in the world. Our state-wide commitment to Pro-Life and LAMB is well recognized and continues to grow. Locally, you have done everything from raising funds for the Wounded Warrior Campaign to providing a hyperbolic chamber for a child. We shared many fun things, golf, picnics, bocce contests to name a few. We have prayed and played together. We have built houses, built ramps, built friends. We have recognized those who succeeded, and have helped those who need our aid. We are truly a fraternity. Thank you. Now I am at the end of term of service to you as your State Deputy. For me it was an exciting, rewarding and tiring period. Your fraternity was so critical in making this time in my life one that was truly an experience of a lifetime. You honored me with your confidence and friendship. Yes, there were times that I felt that the whole world was on my shoulders, but you lightened my heart and spirit to make a difference. Everywhere in the state I met my brother Knights, the smile was there, the handshake was there, and your heartfelt thanks was there to make it all worthwhile. My thanks go out to your state officers and staff for a job well done. My special thanks go out to our State Chaplain, Padre Leon. His support for the Knights and me was so needed. And what a smile he had receiving his own Fourth Degree Sword! Would I do it again? Probably not, there are too many of you who can add your ideas, your conviction, and your commitment in making this state the best in the Order. Consider becoming a part of the team, it is so rewarding. Now I can retire, knowing that the work of the Order is in the capable hands of our newly elected officers, and especially David Jones who will provide leadership in continuing the vision that was started by Fr. McGivney through the 90 th anniversary of our State Council. Kathy and I wish you all well. May the road rise up to meet you May the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face And the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of his hand. Please keep in your prayers all those who serve and protect us here and overseas. May they be given to opportunity to complete their mission, and come home to their families safe and with success. Vivat Jesus, John Gouldie, NC State Deputy 1 P

2 I would like to express my sincere thanks for electing me as your new State Deputy. This is an honor that I will cherish for life. I accept this honor with gratitude and humility and will, to the best of my abilities, live up to your expectations. We will start the year with a full staff of RDD s, DD s, Directors and Chairmen. This staff will have one goal, and that will be to function as one body to uphold our vision for North Carolina. As we pursue our goals, you will notice many changes that will bring back tradition, respect, and leadership for this great Order. Being average means you are just as close to the bottom as you are to the top. We all know it is easier to backslide than it is to climb the hill. Under my watch, I expect everyone to be above average as we perform our duties. I am looking forward with great anticipation to working with every Council, the entire Staff and Officers in making the Knights of Columbus, one inclusive family that wraps itself around our order s principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. Vivat Jesus, Dave Jones, NC State Secretary 2

3 Rev. Deacon Ben Roberts will be ordained on Saturday, June 6, at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Charlotte. Br. Ben was a convert as a teenager and joined our Order soon after he joined St. Philip's parish here in Statesville. Our council has supported him both financially and spiritually during his years at the seminary. Now we would like to invite all Brother Knights across the State to join with the St. James Council 7152 to celebrate Br. Ben's Ordination to the Priesthood. While all are welcome to attend the Ordination at St. Patrick's in Charlotte, soon to be Fr. Roberts has stated that he wants to celebrate Mass on Saturday, June 13, 2009, at 5 pm at St. Philip's here in Statesville in honor of the Knights of Columbus as an expression of his appreciation for our support. The will be a reception held by our council immediately following the Mass. For further information and details please feel free to contact Fred Myers at or fwmbam@hotmail.com. Best regards, Fred Myers Council 7152, Statesville Deacon Ben s First Baptism 3

4 District Master s Message Worthy Sir Knights and Brothers All, Vivat Jesus! We are once again at the threshold of a new fraternal year in just a few short weeks. There are some housekeeping things that require the attention of the Assembly officers before the end of the current fraternal year, if you have not already done so. RSVP Application Civic Award Application To Be A Patriot Award Entry Form Report Of Officers Chosen For The Term The above are all due to Supreme June 30. If you participated in RSVP, notify the Supreme Office. Civic Award and To Be A Patriot Awards These should be filed by every single Assembly. The only reason for not filing is laziness on the part of the officers. Every Assembly performs in both of these areas. It s an injustice to your members not to file. Finally, The Report of Officers Chosen For The Term form is a MUST FILE form.. There is no option on this one. All form should be mailed to Supreme, even if filed on-line. There is still a problem with on-line filing. Look at the bottom of the form. The Master gets copies of all submissions as well as the Vice Supreme Master. If something goes awry, I can t help if I don t have a copy. Once again I thank you all for your participation in Labor Day events across the state, whether as observer or a member of the Honor Guard. Too many Americans celebrate Memorial Day as a day for cookouts and a day off from the job. They need to be reminded that the reason we are able to enjoy these things are due to the sacrifices that have been made by so many others in the name of freedom. Speaking of Honor Guards, I want to publicly thank the Color Guard of the Father Kenneth I. Parker Assembly No.1820, New Bern, for their participation at the North Carolina State Convention. The Colors had to be moved several times during the convention and the team from New Bern did so in a courteous, reverent and expeditious manner. Also thank you to all who brought their regalia to convention and participated in the Honor Guard for Bishop Burbidge and our clergy. Well Done Sir Knights and Brothers! Continue on Page 5 4

5 District Master s Report continued EXEMPLIFICATIONS By the time you read this we are less than a month away from the small Exemplification in Wilmington, June 27 th The Honoree for this Exemplification will be Dr. Denis Carter. The next Exemplification will be held on October 24 th at the Sheraton Imperial, Durham. More information will be coming in the July newsletter. Recruit! Recruit! Recruit. Fees for candidates remains at $70.00, I will advise the other costs as we get closer. The hotel room rate for this event is $ per night, plus applicable taxes. A note about Form 4 s: When submitting candidates, please complete the entire form, legibly, and send it to the Master with payment. The Candidate Certificate is made from the information on the Form 4. The form, all copies intact, is submitted to the Master so it can be signed and the proper sections forwarded to Supreme with my report. I will return the Assembly s portions after the exemplification, for your records. Worthy Assembly Officers, I am always looking for additional information on Sir Knights of the Month. Please take the time to honor that Sir Knight who is/are the unsung hero of your Assembly. Finally, I extend my sincere thank you to all of the Assembly Officers who have served during this past fraternal year for your support and continuing the outstanding record of the Fourth Degree in North Carolina. My congratulations to the new Assembly officers who will serve in the coming year and I look forward to working with you. God Bless you all and God Bless America. SK Robert J. Bob Grabasky, PSD, NC District Master It is never to early to raise money to help support our wounded warriors. These men and women have gone in harm s way to protect us, and our freedom, and we have a great opportunity of helping them. Support this program and send our military folks home for Christmas. 5

15 Thank you to those Councils that responded to my presentation at the State Convention. We now have commitments to help from thirteen councils. We need only eight more to completely fill the schedule. The Silver Rose Run is an International event. The Silver Rose started from London, Ontario, on May 20. It is now traveling across New York and will reach North Carolina, coming from Virginia, on August 16. It will leave to Georgia on September 6. It will end its travels in Monterrey, Mexico, on December 12. We would like to have 21 councils each host the Rose for one day and hold a prayer service the evening that it is with the council. Booklets are provided for the prayer service. This program is to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe and is a good Pro Life activity. Ultimately, the Rose would be carried from one council to the next by runners, taking turns as they went, supported by a Safety Guard and support vehicles. But I know that this can not happen in many locations. It is quite acceptable to transport the Rose by car. But the run is a great opportunity for publicity for your council, the Church and Our Lady. I would encourage carrying the Rose by foot the last short distance to the next council. I hope to get participating councils in all areas of the State. The current list includes no council in the Raleigh area. I would like to have two or three services there. The Greensboro area is not represented either. Please prayerfully consider having your council join this great International Program of The Knights of Columbus. If you would like additional information, please call me at or send an to trgkaj@charter.net. I look forward to hearing from you and working with you to make this an outstanding and meaningful event here in North Carolina. If you have not already done so, please go to our state web site and submit your respective input. As of May 31 st we have received input from only 10 councils. For the Posters, it was What Does the Baby Jesus Mean to Me and for the Poems and Essays, How I Can Respect Human Life. There were hundreds of entries for each group and they all were wonderful. 20 News from the Chorale Chorale Sings for Convention in Historic New Bern The KOC Chorale was grateful to SK Keith Barker, Chorale member, for stepping in as director for the May State Convention Mass and Banquet program. Director Joe Dick was recovering from a severe pulmonary problem and needed an assist. After not singing together for 6 months, they perfected their music and provided a beautiful Prelude and Mass accompaniment, a military tribute and Auld Lang Syne to honor DM Bob Grabasky, PSD, in the finale for the evening. The Chorale welcomed a new member to their group, SK Bill Echevarria, from Blessed Sacrament Church in Burlington. The wives who attended the Convention had a great opportunity to tour the historic towns of New Bern, nearby Beaufort and Swansboro and The Tryon Palace. The tour of Beaufort included a sighting of the historic home of Blackbeard The Pirate along the picturesque waterfront. For the first time in 17 years, the Chorale reluctantly cancelled their June engagement at Maggie Valley to give Director Joe a bit more recovery time. The next engagement is at the Organizational Meeting at the Charlotte Marriott Executive Park on July

21 Brothers All, June 2009 Volume 32 - No. 12 Another successful, active year comes to a close - in another month!! Let's not forget that our terms end on June 30, 2009, not at the Convention! There is still work to be done and some very important work! Let me start by saying "thank you" for your support at the Convention and for having the confidence to place me in the position of State Treasurer. I will do my best to uphold the values that have been placed on that office, and working with the other State Officers to insure compliance with the wishes of the State Council and you, its Delegates. Congratulations to all the award winners at the Convention. The hard work of our Brothers at the Council level was recognized and rewarded! The programs were numerous and varied and one could hear the murmurs, as the reason for the awards were read off, one could get the drift that others were listening. We must all thank the Program Directors for their work with a difficult task of selecting the placements for all the awards. They have all commented that this was a tough year as the program submissions were great! For all those Grand Knights and District Deputies whose terms in office are ending - many thanks for your help and support. Just remember you are now the "elder statesman" and in a good position to advise those coming up the ranks. Remember a few years back, as you rose through the Council chairs, and those that were there to advise you. To those new Grand Knights and District Deputies - welcome! We look forward to working with you and for you for the success of your Councils. Please - Please, never be afraid to ask a question. If we don't know it - we will find the answer. You will have an excellent General Program Director in Mike Durbin and he has already hit the ground running with some ideas for the Program Area. Your State Officers met this past weekend to discuss our plans and direction for the coming year and we are all excited to get going. We welcome the new State Warden, Colin Jorsch, and know he will jump right in and continue to work hard for us all. Remember there is still a month to go in your term and you CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Vivat Jesus! Jack Murray, NC State Advocate 21
