C North Carolina State Council Tar Heel Knight U F My Brother Knights, State Deputy Message P February was interesting. Our Bishops demonstrated their support for our marriage values by joining the press conference in Raleigh, our State Chaplain, asks us to all pray for life through a rosary each month, and we had one of the largest third degrees to date in the state. Each will be talked about in detail in other parts of the newsletter BUT WOW way too much for a month.but it is going to get even more exciting. I asked the vocations director in Raleigh last week about vocation support, there are... 3 councils supporting every Raleigh seminarian! What a marvelous message you are showing in support for the men who will spiritually lead us in the years to come. But if you haven t made your RSVP contributions yet, make sure you do.more is always needed and welcomed. Each council should have completed their preparation for the membership blitz. First and foremost, get that first degree scheduled following the date of the blitz! Don t let that prospect wait. If there is an issue about getting a degree team, work with your District Deputy. If need be, I will get you a team. Just make sure you are ready for this key period of the year. This is the order-wide initiative to make a difference in your parish and council. Your State Officers and Staff are prepared to assist you in any way to make this a success. You only have to ASK! Look at the dateline for the convention; you should be getting your paperwork in order. (I received a Family of the Year nomination yesterday!) Several due dates are soon. Even if you don t desire the recognition, you should still write up your accomplishments so that others may learn about your great ideas. Lastly, we have so many things to be thankful for, our faith and our family. Say a prayer of thanksgiving today. Pray for those who are facing financial and job issues. Finally, pray for our military who are making sure we have safety in our country, that their mission is successful, and they come home safe. God Bless you and your family, and God Bless America. 2 From our State Chaplain Brother Knights, With great joy we have begun our Lenten Season. This first week of Lent, the church invites us to reflect on the meaning of prayer and fasting. Our busy world many times does not give us a chance to be still in the presence of God, yet, our church invites us during this season of Lent to pause and meditate on the mystery of God s love and forgiveness to us. Our church at the present times presents topics that we believe are political, yet, our Catholic Social teachings gives a different perspective of our spiritually in our present world today. The respect of human life, is not only related to abortion, also has to do with discrimination, racism, sexism, drugs/alcohol and many other substance abuses as well as the respect of our elderly and veterans, etc. We, as Roman Catholics, are called to action, not only by writing notes or making phone calls to the government, but also by living the Gospel of Jesus and acting upon it. This season of lent could be a tool for each of us to be inspire by the daily Mass reading. This time of distress and not much confidence, could be a time of perseverance and self-denial, so at the time we will approach our Easter Sunday celebration it can truly be said - Jesus Christ is Risen Today! Do not forget that Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence and the Stations of the Cross. Peace of Christ Be With You! Padre Leon Very Rev. Marcos Leon-Angulo V. F. 3 March 2, 2009 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: House Bill 168, which would permit the citizens of North Carolina to purchase a Choose Life license plate to support pregnancy crisis centers throughout the state, has been sent to the House Rules Committee by the Speaker of the House, Joe Hackney of Orange County. The Rules Committee is often the place where bills are sent to die. We urge you to contact Speaker Hackney, President Pro-Tem of the State Senate, Senator Marc Basnight and your local Representative to ask that HB 168 be permitted a vote in the Rules Committee in order for it to proceed to the next step in the legislative process. You can contact each of these legislators by clicking on the link below. Without our continual pressure, it is unlikely this bill will become law. Thank you for supporting the passage of a law that will assist expectant mothers and their unborn children without any cost to taxpayers. Sincerely, The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge Bishop of Raleigh The Most Reverend Peter J. Jugis Bishop of Charlotte Click the link below to log in and send your message: 3

From the Desk of the State Secretary Brothers All, The upcoming State Convention will be here before you know it. This is the time you should begin preparing for the many duties you will be required to accomplish prior to April 1 st. The convention checklist for the Grand Knights is in your procession; now you must have the dedication to follow through on your duties as set forth in this document. Grand Knights, you and your Officers along with your Council, must elect your delegates and alternates for the upcoming convention in the month of March and one copy must be sent to the State Secretary prior to April 1 st. The other copy must be brought to the convention and presented to the Credentials Chairman to match up to the one you mailed to the State Secretary. You and your Officers should select your Knight of the Year, Golden Knight of the Year, Family of the Year, and Rookie of the Year which are due to the State Secretary on or before April 1 st of this year. The Grand Knight and Program Director should be working with your District Deputy in making out your report for all of your programs for the last six months. You should be selecting your best program in Church, Community, Council, Family, Youth, and Membership to be sent to the State Advocate and General Program Director before April 1 st. Your council newsletter and scrapbook contest guidelines can be found in your Grand Knight s council handbook and these deadlines should be followed if your council would like to be considered for the top honor of the STATE DEPUTY S AWARD. Your Necrology list for all of your departed Brothers who have died during the year starting on May 1, 2008 must be sent to the State Secretary on or before the April 15 th deadline. Starting in March and continuing through April are the dates that the Supreme has set aside for our blitz for new members. Yes Worthy Grand Knights, this is the time to spring into action and make sure that your council has the new membership required for you to have a star council in the year A suggestion for you is to meet with your Pastor to set aside one or two weekends where you will have your membership blitz with enough Knights to recruit new Knights for every weekend Mass. If your Pastor is agreeable, you or someone you appoint, could speak from the alter either before or at the end of Mass giving a short speech as to who the Knights are and why every Catholic gentleman over the age of eighteen should be a part of the largest Catholic Fraternal Order in the world. Please remember to encourage every member of your council to sell as many state raffle tickets for your council as this not only supports your council but your State Council. I would encourage every council to purchase an ad in the upcoming convention booklet to help the Host council to defray the cost of hosting the State Convention. Worthy Grand Knights, your state and Supreme per capita must be paid prior to your council being seated at the State Convention. The invoices have been sent out, so please make sure that you send your check in as soon as possible. Dave Jones, NC KofC State Secretary 6

Graveyard of the Innocents Read Pat Loves article on Page 8 to see what this picture relates to. Third degree at St. Ann s in Fayetteville NC, February 28, 2009 Pictured are the 70 men that took their Third Degree, State Deputy John Gouldie, State Secretary David Jones, and somewhere in the picture is State Treasurer Greg Kent. This was really a surprise in that we thought only 50 would attend. We should all make sure that the host council is contacted DAYS in advance about the attendees at a degree (any level). State Ceremonial Chairman Joe Brunner gives the host council the timing, but if you are going to attend, please let them know. 7

COMMUNITY DIRECTOR My Brother Knights: Greetings from beautiful Graham, NC! I have three items for your attention this month, so I beg your indulgence and attention. Reflections on Life: Our council, for the first time last year, set up a Graveyard of the Innocents after one Mass and left the crosses up for four weeks. Our plan going into this was that we would continue into the future, expanding slowly over the next few years by adding enough crosses for one additional Mass each year until all Masses were covered. As we all have learned at some point, a plan is usually shredded after the first encounter with brutal reality. In this case, the brutal reality was that the support from the parish demanded that we expand our commitment by this year to cover ALL Masses. We responded, with a major effort from a dedicated few and had parishioners process to our Memorial to Life after each Mass, where small crosses were placed in row upon row, surrounding the memorial. The result was a display of hundreds of crosses bearing silent witness to the millions of innocent children killed in their mother wombs before they had a chance to see the light of day. The impact that we are aware of has been substantial. We pray that the thousands of people passing this street corner daily have been similarly affected and that their hearts, where needed, have been changed. (Picture is on Page 7) New Community Award for State Convention Community PLUS 1 program. (PLUS is an acronym for Pray, Let Us Support--our Holy Father-- by innovation in finding ever new ways to bring our love of the Lord into our community. (Recall his words to the KofC Board of Directors: Dear friends, in the spirit of your founder, the Venerable Michael McGivney, may the Knights of Columbus discover ever new ways to serve as a leaven of the Gospel in the world and a force for renewal of the Church in holiness and apostolic zeal. I would like to have each council submit, along with the other reports for the second competitive period a NEW community program that they implemented this fraternal year. The community director, and a panel of his choosing, will select one (maybe 2nd and 3rd place also) in each division. Criteria will be innovation, impact on community and council involvement. NC4Marriage.com is the website for a new effort to provide for a State Marriage Protection Amendment in North Carolina. Much, much information is available there. Near-term, there will be a Marriage Rally at 11:00 AM on Tuesday March 3 in front of the legislative building in Raleigh. All those who can attend are strongly encouraged to do so. Keep your eyes and ears open for fast-breaking developments on this effort as things need to move (and are moving) quickly in the NC House and Senate. Past attempts in the state legislature have been prevented from coming to a vote by the legislative leadership. Major efforts are underway to get these leaders to allow our elected representatives, and us voters, the opportunity to express our will on this vital matter. Those of you who were at the mid-year meeting in Greenville head Msgr. Clay address this effort. The fact is that while NC does have laws that define marriage as a union between one man and one woman at one time, these may be overturned by a judge if someone is able to convince that judge to do so. This has already happened in a number of states, where judges have essentially overturned laws enacted by duly elected representatives. Also, NC is the only southeastern state not to have such a provision in the State Constitution. Finally, both of our Bishops are firmly behind this effort and have publicly endorsed the effort. Pat Love, NC Community Director 8

MARRIAGE AMENDMENT (L-R) Bishop Burbidge, Bishop Jugis, Msgr. Clay, State Deputy John Gouldie at the press conference in support of legislation to put a Marriage Amendment to a vote. The discussion was about what our bishops would like the Knights to do in support of getting this proposal on the ballot this upcoming November. It s interesting that North Carolina is the only southern state that does not have a marriage amendment to their constitution. Our legislators and clergy of our state want this legislation to pass. It will allow the voters in North Carolina to be given the opportunity to decide what constitutes a marriage. As Bishop Jugis explained, this is not gay bashing, as Catholics we have a responsibility to love and respect everyone. This legislation is allow the citizens of our state to define what a marriage is, rather than have a judge somewhere in the state decide. So what can you do to support this action? Pray. Prayer is one of the most powerful tools we have. Learn about the issue. Go to or the to understand why this is so important. Make your voice heard. Join your other parishioners and sign the petition to let the people vote and decide the issue. 9

From Your Church Director Vivat Jesus! As I told you when we started out this year that there would be challenges that were difficult and some that were relatively easy. By now you are positively sure of it. This has been a great year and one that each and every one of you can feel justifiably proud. With the great number and variety of church activities that you have reported we have succeeded in fulfilling one of our prime missions. Support our church. Don t feel however, that the job is finished. It s never finished. Going to mass as a group, Lectoring, Being an Usher, Eucharistic Minister, singing in the Choir, are all important functions that many of our Knights do to support our parishes. There are a myriad of tasks around our parishes that deserve your attention. Remember to bring all three of the traveling Icons' to the convention. The State Deputy has plans for each of them. And lastly don t forget to report your activities. The men of your council deserve the recognition. Fraternally, Dave McGuire State Church Director State Advocate Brothers All, Programs Recognition Reporting Rewarding Responsibility! What do all these words have in common? A reminder that we are starting the last month of activity that will be reported for the 2 nd Reporting Period of 10/1/08 3/31/09. We must acknowledge the great programs and deeds accomplished by our Brothers on the Council level and tell everyone about it. How do we do that? Recently, you received a Grand Knights checklist for the convention from the State Secretary detailing dates for submitting your requests for recognition. Also in the Handbook under AWARDS there are 10 pages of award guidelines starting with the Family of Year, Knight of Year, etc., and ending on page 10 with the State Deputy Award. The time is NOW to start working on the information for the reports so you have time to review them for accuracy. You may want a committee to review or prepare the reports even better! The state activity reporting period report is also due at the end of the month. This is the report you sit down with your District Deputy, discuss your activities for the past 6 months and complete the form. This is an important submission if you are to be eligible for any state awards. I recently met with a DD and a Council and they could not believe the numbers that were documented for their activities. They thought they had done very little! Continued on Page 11 10

Council Protocol The year is now in full swing. The budget is done planning calendar complete and things are getting done. Let s touch on a little protocol. Council Meetings The Grand Knight must conduct his meeting in strict accordance with Charter, Constitution and Laws of the Knights of Columbus, supplemented by the council by-laws and according to parliamentary procedure. Roberts Rules of Order The Grand Knight is the presiding office in the council. When a member wishes to speak, he does so by rising from his seat, addressing the chair by saying Worthy Grand Knight and saluting at the same time. The grand knight will return the salute and acknowledge the member. If all members will follow just this point of protocol council meetings will take on a new meaning. More to follow in the coming months. What need to be done NOW? 1. Fraternal Survey (due 1/31/09 if not submitted do so now). 2. Special Olympics Report (due 1/31/09) 3. Semiannual Audit (due 2/15/09) 4. Elect two delegates and 2 alternates to the state convention, the grand knight is one of the delegates. If he cannot attend another is elected. 5. Send credentials to state council. 6. Complete the Grand Knights Check list provided at the midyear meeting. 7. Pick your council s best activity for the year and do a write up on it and send it to the state program director. 8. Sell raffle tickets. If you run out see your DD he has more. More information on things to be done and how to do it can be found on the State web site, more information on council protocol can be found in the KofC protocol handbook provided to each of your councils. Or you can me at waynekleven@earthlink.net All questions or comments will be appreciated and welcomed. Wayne Kleven Council Director State Advocate message continued from Page 10 I would also like to remind all that the Convention is just around the corner and please get your reservations in early. When we put things off, the last minute comes in a hurry and we are lost. The Convention Committee has worked very hard to make all welcome to the New Bern area and there will be special events for all to enjoy. In these tough economic times let us all remember our less fortunate brothers and those others most in need of our help. Every little bit will help and continue to foster the good deeds of the Knights of Columbus. Vivat Jesus! Jack Murray 11

MEMBERSHIP! Well brothers, it s Blitz time again. Supreme has set the weekend of Founders Day March 28/29 th as the formal Blitz date. If your Pastor will not let you do the Blitz in Lent the default date is the weekend of April 18/19 but no later than April 25/26. The Blitz checklist is available on the State Web Site under Membership. As we stressed at the Organizational Meeting and at the Mid- Year Sessions, success is based on planning and effort. Use the tools available, put forth the effort and you will be successful. The membership fantasy golf tournament is getting tighter with more councils below par. We will have a complete update next month as we approach the Convention where the winner will be announced and the prize awarded. Register for the Convention, it is just around the corner. As you get you activity reports submitted for recognition, don t forget Membership. Just use the same form you use to report your best programs under Church, Council, Youth, Etc. and simply write in Membership at the top. Next years forms will have membership included. You are doing a great many outstanding programs, make sure your Members and Councils efforts are recognized. Get you submissions in on time. This is a busy time of year. Your program reports must be submitted. Your delegates for the convention must be selected. Your Yearbook, Knight of the year, Golden Knight of the Year and Family of the Year must be submitted for consideration. Your slate of officers selection process for the next Columbian year must be started and preparations for your Council Awards Night begun. With all this activity going on it would be real easy to put recruiting and retention on the back burner, but now is the time to reward our State Deputy for his two years of outstanding leadership and hard work. I can think of no better way than to have North Carolina finish high on the Circle of Honor and win our head to head match ups in the Supreme Recruiting Competition. If all of us select and do one more recruiting activity between the Blitz and the end on June we will have Knights in North Carolina when John steps down. Hold an open house, run a direct mail campaign, work the insurance lists, conduct one of the various recruiting activities in the parish or do block parties for non-knight parishioners. The checklists on how to run these programs and more are all on the State Web Site. Vince and I are always available to assist you and are only a phone call away. Lets finish 2008/2009 with style. Vivat Jesus! Bob Hack (East) and Vince Lombardo (West) 12

Slide Show Picture Deadline Brothers, As we get nearer to Convention time, I ask that all pictures that are to be included into the Convention slide show be at my address no later than April This will leave me enough time to put the show together. Also, I would like to remind all who are attending the convention that the blanket that is being raffled off is made right here in North Carolina. If we get at least 25 Knights, or their wives, to order one then we can get them for $39.95 before tax and they can be shipped to you in 4 to 6 weeks. To order, send DD#2 Ludwig Hartung your information. I am looking forward to seeing all my Brothers at the Convention in New Bern! 15 Fathers for Good Do you have a Father for Good in your council? We want to recognize him! Simply tell us how this Father for Good has lived up to being a work in progress, called by God, and called to do the ordinary in an extraordinary manner. Submit with your end of year awards. The winners will be recognized at the convention. Greetings to all from the Heart of North Carolina!! I hope this month s edition finds all of you well. As the State Convention rapidly approaches, I just wanted to share some reminders of some programs with you. We would really like to see great participation in both of these programs. If you have questions as to what is required, contact your District Deputy or give me an e- mail via the state web site. And if you haven t had a chance to visit the Fathers for Good web site at I highly encourage you to do so. It really is a great site. 16 District Master s Report Sir Knights and Brothers All, Vivat Jesus! It seems hard to believe that Lent has begun and Easter is only six week away. The Honor Guards will once again be very busy. It is a good opportunity for the Visible Arm of the Order to assist our councils by being just that, Visible. The councils will be doing their membership Blitz around this time period. If we participate at our parish functions, it gives incentive, in some cases, for me to join our Order. Continuing on from last month concerning the new Drill Manual, I would like to advise that we will once again carry swords with the blade edge against the shoulder. It is my preference as it is easier to carry for extended periods of time. Supreme has also issued color code standards to the manufacturers of our regalia, that is, they have given them standard industry codes so all colors of capes and plumes are the same. There have been a number if discrepancies in the past with dye lots being off. This does not make us look very organized. All future regalia will be identical in color. I personally can attest to this problem when I received my gold cape and chapeau. There was a great variation between the two. Honor Guards for a deceased member or immediate family member participate only at the family s request. At funerals, we do not participate in the mass. We are an Honor Guard for the deceased and family members as they enter and depart the church. Lines are formed from the church entrance to the hearse. No other participation at the mass is sanctioned. The Honor Guard sits in the rear of the church and attends mass. Period. I have received the material for the revised Fourth Degree Exemplification ceremony and I am in the process of distributing it to the Fourth Degree Team members. The first opportunity for this revision to be seen will be at the upcoming small exemplification on June 27, in Wilmington. The team will be practicing between now and then as we all have to be recertified by the Vice Supreme Master prior to holding an exemplification. Again, I am asking the Officers of the Assemblies to recognize a member for the honor of Sir Knight of the Month. I am truly disappointed that I have not received anything form anyone since the middle of January. There are many members out there that deserve recognition. Why can t you write a few paragraphs on their merits? Please, let me hear from you. Some of you will be attending the State Convention in New Bern in May. Please bring your regalia and participate in the Honor Guard at Mass. We always have an open invitation from the State Deputy to bring our regalia. Let s turn out in force to show our support for the State Chaplain, Padre Leon and all clergy who will offer our convention Mass. District Master s Report continued on page 17 16

District Master s Report continued On another note.... I had an opportunity to ask one of my parish priests about gifts for the newly ordained priests. Father s response was enlightening so I m passing it on. Father suggested a set of Holy Oils, or a case for his chalice if it did not come with one. Also, Father suggested a mass kit, which every priest can use. The last one really surprised me. A GPS. When Father is assigned to a parish, he most likely will not know the area. The GPS could save him a great deal of time getting around in his new location. Just some thoughts with ordination time approaching. As always, thank you all for everything you do as Knights of Columbus and members of the Fourth Degree. A special thanks to the Faithful Navigators and Faithful Comptrollers for completing their Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity Reports. The North Carolina District has the honor of 100% submissions. 19 North Carolina K of C Insurance David Wellmon Agency Buying life insurance is something that s easy to put off until tomorrow. And with the busy lives we all lead, tomorrow can easily become next week, next month, or even next year. For the sake of those you love, don t let that happen. I consider it my fraternal obligation to make sure that every Knights of Columbus member has the opportunity to protect his family with the Order s top-rated insurance products. I ll work with you to put a plan in place that will help your family when that help is most needed. We all know someone whose health, instantly and seemingly out-of-the-blue, changes. You may think this can t happen to you. Think again. And keep in mind that no one will ring a bell warning you that your health is about to change. Medical technology has turned many diseases previously termed death sentences into very treatable conditions. What medical advances haven t changed, however, is that being diagnosed with one of these diseases will dramatically affect your ability to purchase life insurance coverage. Don t wait until it s too late. Your Knights of Columbus insurance program is second to none. Knights of Columbus life insurance represents a safety net for Catholic families that s unsurpassed, and I m proud of that. I m also concerned. Why? Because so many of our brother Knights have no life insurance with the Order. I suspect that, for many of them, tomorrow has become next week, next month or next year. Don t be one of them. Don t wait for the bell to ring. It isn t going to. DAVID M. WELLMON AGENCY General Agent David M.
