C North Carolina State Council Tar Heel Knight U F A Message from the State Deputy P Brothers All we ended the first quarter a little behind in membership but with our Fall Blitz, I am sure that every council will get caught up and even surpass their membership goal for the first four months of the year. Our fast start contest will be over by the time you receive this letter. Our Membership Director, John Nussbaum, will soon have the winners for the councils and the District Deputies. The winners of this contest will have to get back with John Nussbaum and give him your size for the jacket you won. John Nussbaum and I will be putting together a brand new contest for all of the councils, District Deputies and Staff. This contest will have a start date of October 1, 2010 and we have not arrived at a date for the finish of the contest. We will be working on some great prizes for both councils and members. Please start looking at all of your mail that will signal the start of this contest. I would like to thank the Grand Knight, his Officers and members for putting on an outstanding state golf tournament. I want to especially thank Ricky and Cheryl Ann Luc for their dedication and hard work in pulling off an outstanding state golf tournament. If a council wanted to be a hero and lead the nation in membership, they would only have to bring in the same amount of members as your State Deputy had in the number of strokes at the state golf tournament. If any council wants to try and equal my numbers for just one day for your membership for the entire year call me and I will give you the number you would have to achieve. And to make it easy, I will only use six holes for the total. We are entering into our second quarter where all of the programs and District Deputy Program forms must be completed by the end of October. Let s make this one of our bell weather reporting periods of all time. District Deputies, get together with your Grand Knights and make sure that all of their programs are counted for the first half of this year. At the same time, work with your Grand Knight or the Council Program Director in obtaining their outstanding write ups for programs in Church, Council, Community, Family, Youth and Membership. Worthy Grand Knights, I want to again make sure that you know that your Regional District Deputies, District Deputies, Staff and your State Officers are only a phone call away from supplying you with answers or any other help you need in making your council the best that it can be in the year I just received all of the Supreme Awards and we will start presenting these to the Grand Knights and councils throughout the state. October is the month of the rosary and I would like every council and every member to offer up a rosary this month for the success of our Fall Blitz and the reporting of all programs for your District Deputy. Vivat Jesus, State Deputy Dave Jones P.S. Recruit a fellow Catholic into the Knights of Columbus so that he can become a better Catholic. Live, Laugh and Love your Church, your Family, yourself and the Knights of Columbus 1

Announcement from the State Deputy It is with sadness that I announce the resignation of State Advocate Mike Durbin. Mike resigned from the board and has taken a position with the Supreme Office in New Haven, Connecticut as Senior Vice-President of Membership and Growth Development for the Order. Mike will be in charge of membership and growth for all of the jurisdictions in the Knights of Columbus. North Carolina should be extremely proud that Supreme has selected one of our members and a member of our state board to fill such an important office for the Knights of Columbus throughout the world. The state of North Carolina will be having a membership contest in honor of our newly appointed Senior Vice-President of Membership and Growth Development. Grand Knights, in your mail shortly, will be the outline of a new contest that will feature Mike Durbin one of our own and to prove that Supreme made the right choice, we all should recruit a new member in Mike s honor. Vivat Jesus, Dave Jones, State Deputy 2

Membership Membership is the life blood of our organization. With membership we can do all of the great programs planned by our Councils to help our church and our community. Per the latest report from Supreme, 57 Councils in North Carolina have brought in at least one new member so far this year. As a result of many people working hard, these 57 Councils have brought in 156 new members. Many more are waiting to take their 1 st Degree in early October. I expect the number of Councils with at least one new member to jump up dramatically within the next month as the candidates from our planned Fall Blitz take their 1 st Degree. The Fast Start Program came to an end at the end of September. 57 councils brought in a new member in July, August or September and will be in a drawing for a very nice KofC jacket. We will have the drawing for Regions 3 and 4 at the Western Mid-year meeting in January. The drawing for Regions 1 and 2 will be at the Eastern Mid-year meeting in January. As of right now we have the following number of entries in the 4 drawings: Region 1 82 entries Region 2 89 entries Region 3 97 entries Region 4 16 entries We are now ready to implement the plans that you have made for the Fall Blitz. The official blitz is scheduled for the weekend of October 9 th &10 th. When you complete your blitz, please complete the Blitz form on the North Carolina KofC website under membership, so our State Deputy can make a good report to Supreme. I am looking forward to hearing how successful you were in your efforts to recruit new members. Remember the reason you are doing the blitz is to recruit new members that can help you with your current programs and to give you new ideas of what you can do to help your Church and Community. You are also helping that new member become a better Catholic by getting him involved you the good programs that you run. Getting a new member is only the beginning. We need to get them to their 2 nd and 3 rd degrees and ask him to help you in one of your programs. One good tool to track this is the Shining Armor Award program. Have you looked at it? If not, I would strongly suggest that you look at it. Please let me know if I can I help you in any way? I can be reached at H (919) , W (919) or at Jnussbaum@nc.rr.com. Fraternally yours in Christ, John Nussbaum State Membership Director 4

Bill Scott honored by Special Olympics North Carolina By: Keith L. Fishburne, President/CEO, Special Olympics North Carolina In a Special Olympics North Carolina reception hosted at the Governor s Executive Mansion in Raleigh, Knights of Columbus member Bill Scott, of Raleigh, received the Special Olympics North Carolina 2010 President s Award in recognition of Bill s work to improve the lives of people with intellectual disabilities through his volunteerism and creation of the Operation LAMB Foundation. SONC President/CEO Keith L. Fishburne highlighted the importance the Knights of Columbus funding has annually on Special Olympics in North Carolina, and thanked Bill for his many years of leadership that has resulted in the Knights supporting many nonprofits that provide services and support for people with intellectual disabilities through the Operation LAMB Foundation. The award was presented during the inaugural celebration in North Carolina of Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day by Special Olympics. After the death of Mrs. Shriver in 2009, Special Olympics, Inc. selected the fourth Saturday of September as EKS Day around the world. Governor Bev Perdue and First Gentleman Robert Eaves invited Special Olympics North Carolina to host a reception for more than 200 at the Executive Mansion on September 24 to reflect on Mrs. Shriver s accomplishments through Special Olympics and celebrate the future of the world s largest sports organizations for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. People like Bill are the behind-the-scenes unsung heroes who helped make Special Olympics the organization it is today, said Fishburne. Special Olympics athletes are the real winners because of the volunteer and funding support the Knights of Columbus provide throughout the year. Bill s vision in creating the Operation LAMB Foundation in North Carolina has had such a wonder impact on many organizations that work with people with intellectual disabilities, Fishburne said. Volunteers are needed for upcoming state level competitions with the SONC Bocce Tournament regional's in Fayetteville (October 16) and Asheville (October 23) for a total of 350 athletes. The SONC Fall Tournament is in High Point November 6-7 featuring four sports (cycling, roller skating, soccer and tennis) for 500 athletes. To volunteer, visit the SONC web site at Keith L. Fishburne President/CEO Special Olympics North Carolina Steve Rubin, Special Olympics North Carolina photographer 6

State Warden Message Greetings to one and all from Fayetteville. I hope that this edition of the THK finds each of you very well! Over the past few months, I have had the opportunity to deliver some milestone certificates to a couple of councils and I would just like to express my congratulations to them here. In June, I was afforded the opportunity to deliver a twenty-five year certificate to the Father Michael Irwin Council 9001 in Dunn. This month, I also had the opportunity to join the Bishop Vincent S. Waters Council 9030 in Laurinburg during their 25th Anniversary celebration. Congratulations to both of these councils for their continued service to the order, their communities and most importantly our Church! As always with such visits to the councils in the state, I find it absolutely amazing how busy, and how much good our councils are doing. This truly humbles me, as I know that all of our councils are doing such outstanding works in their own ways. I often recommend that the big projects that I hear about be submitted for awards from the state, as I have heard some truly unique and fantastic activities being conducted. I would also like to congratulate the Msgr. Koch Council #6528, and especially Rickie Luc (and crew) on running an outstanding golf tournament for the state this year. And yes, congratulations to you guys in High Point for winning the Neely Cup. Earlier in the month, many of our gospel readings focused on the unconditional love that Jesus has for us. If you remember, one of the gospel readings spoke about the prodigal son. Our pastor, Father Kelly, really brought this familiar reading to a new light for me, and I would like to share some of his reflections with you. Early in the parable, Jesus speaks of a shepherd who left the lion s share (no pun intended) of his sheep to go to the desert and search out the one lost sheep. Why? Why would the shepherd leave ninety-nine sheep to recover only one? The last part of the parable deals with the prodigal son. Some history from those days, if you remember the story, the father gave half of his wealth to his youngest son. In those days, only the oldest son was entitled to anything, so in the tradition of the day, the youngest son was entitled to NOTHING! After squandering what he had received the youngest son returned and the father ran out to greet him another act that should have never happened, as in those days, the father deserved the respect of his sons and would wait for them to come to him not so in this parable. All of this speaks to the crazy, unconditional love that God has for us. For many of us, this love is undeserved, but God gives it to us. So, if we take only a fraction of this love and apply it to the many good works that we are accomplishing throughout this state, the heavy burdens that we encounter become a little easier, our yokes become a little lighter. God Bless and Vivat Jesus! Colin Jorsch, State Warden 8

Community Vivat Jesus, my brothers!!! It s hard to believe that October is already here, and that we are beginning the fourth month of this Fraternal year. As always, it is wonderful talking with my Brother Knights about their ideas and areas of volunteerism. It was really great to share ideas with so many of you this past September 11th, Patriot s Day, in Charlotte at the Eucharistic Congress. Since the start of this Fraternal year, I ve had the opportunity to talk with many Grand Knights from around our great state, and they all have had terrific programs to brag about. I ve heard about Habitat for Humanity crews, road cleanup crews, church beautification, Op LAMB you name it and I ve heard about it. Or have I? One way to be certain that I am aware of all of the good works that your Council does is to complete and submit the State Council Service Program form which can be downloaded from the North Carolina Knights of Columbus State website The form is due by October 30th. You ve nearly a whole month to put together the information and send it along. Now, I ve heard all of the excuses we aren t into competition, or we aren t a big enough Council to be considered for an award, or insert your excuse here. Good for you, don t compete with other Councils; rather challenge yourselves to bigger and better service projects. Your service projects will be compared only with other Councils within your division, and no one else. As for the excuses that aren t listed there s not much to say. I believe that your year as Grand Knight is a year of service to the brother Knights of your home Council. That being said, I believe it is imperative that you do everything within your power to recognize the members of your Council and their families for the devotion and sacrifice that they continually make to their Council, our Order, and of course, our communities. Simply put, please complete and turn in your State Council Service Program forms for the area of community involvement. Take care & GOD bless, Vince Higgins, Community Director Late State Directory Change - Council #11102 Charlotte has changed their meeting night and place where they meet. Starting in Oct, we will meet the 2nd Wed of the month after the 7:00pm mass around 7:30pm or so. We will meet in the Our Lady of the Assumption School; 4225 Shamrock Drive; Charlotte, NC Thank You! Grand Knight Council #11102 Jeff Mathews 9

LAMB News We are coming down to the home stretch, only three months to go! Please make sure you have sufficient supplies for any drives you may have coming up and now is the perfect time to request those corporate donations. Remember, all LAMB deposits must be made and a yearend income report submitted no later than December 31, 2010 and all disbursement requests need to be submitted by February 1, LAMB Treasurer Angelo Gibilaro, assisted by regional Knights of Columbus representatives, presents a State LAMB foundation check to Leon Owens, Executive Director of the Caswell Center in Goldsboro, NC. Brother Pernu of Council 6648 Havelock, described by the Council s LAMB Director Rick Vaccarella as a LAMB Tootsie Roll fanatic at work. Although it only looks like he may have six arms, he is being ably assisted by Director Vaccarella two daughters. Fraternally, Richard White, LAMB Director 10

Worthy Sir Knights All, Vivat Jesus! NEW ASSEMBLY! On September 20, 2010, I received notification from the Supreme Master that the Committee on Charters approved the establishment of the Fr. Francis Connolly Assembly, #3253, in Greensboro, North Carolina. Sir Knight Walter Kulla will become the Charter Faithful Navigator, which will be basically based at St. Pius the X Catholic Church. The pastor and Faithful Friar will be the Reverend Monsignor Anthony Marcaccio, FV. Many of you will remember Msgr. Marcaccio as the State Chaplain during my term and PSD Tony Petite s term as State Deputy. We all welcome the Sir Knights of Assembly 3253 and look forward to working with them in the future. This Assembly forwarded the request to be formed with forty-two members. Congratulations to Sir Knight Walter and all of the members of this new Assembly. I want extend my deepest gratitude and thank you to all of the Sir Knights who arrived at 8:30 am, Saturday, September 11, in Charlotte for the Eucharistic Congress procession. We had more the 75 Sir Knights in regalia! Wow! What a showing. My thanks also to those who stayed throughout the day for Honor Guard for Adoration of the Eucharist, and accompanying the Bishop on his tour of the various venues and for the Honor Guard at the closing mass. I would be remiss if I did not that Sir Knight and PFN Ron Harbert for all of his hard work as the Fourth Degree liaison with the Congress planning team during the past year. And to Sir Knights and Color Corps Commanders Art Fitzgerald and Joe Brunner, both of whom are PFN s, who stepped up to fill the District Marshals duties in his absence due to illness. The Exemplification in Charlotte on November 6 th is fast approaching. The information is on the North Carolina State Council web page ( for anyone who had not received it last month. The cut off date for hotel reservations is Oct. 12 and the cutoff date for Form 4 s is Oct. 25. The phone number for the Renaissance Hotel is If you are going to participate in regalia, as I hope many of you will, at the Exemplification, the uniform will be plain vanilla, meaning no pins, name plates, mini-badges, or past jewels. Jewels of your current office may be worn. This is done to ensure that the Honor Guard will be uniform in appearance. Please keep this in mind. I will again ask that if your Assembly will be attending, please consider making a donation to the host Assembly, Central Piedmont Assembly #3158, to help defray the cost of the Hospitality Suite. They receive no money from the Master and have volunteered for this assignment. Donations can be sent to the Faithful Comptroller, SK Ron Babbitt, 153 Pounds Court SW, Concord, NC Our Brother Sir Knight Gene Tortone has relocated to Virginia Beach and given up his business as the supplier of Fourth Degree items for sale at our Exemplifications. Gene did not leave us without a vendor however. Jovic Embroidery will be coming to Charlotte in Gene s place. This company does many of the exemplifications on the east coast and should have quite an array of items for sale. The owner is a PFN and Fourth Degree Sir Knight in Virginia. This is a trial and if it does not work out I will look for another vendor. Your comments to your FN s, who I would ask to forward them to me, will be appreciated. Sir Knight Lew McCloud, the State Council photographer, will also be available for photos. Please see last month s issue of the Golden Plume for prices or go to the State Council web site. Lew too has his own photography business and gives us a very good price for his services. IRS 990 s Now that your audit period has ended make sure you file your 990 Forms to ensure that you remain under the Supreme Tax Free Status. This is the last year that the IRS will grant immunity to any organization for not having filed in the past years. If you have failed to file last years return, please file it immediately. To file the 990 Post card form, go to epostcard.990form.org. If your Assembly has not filed in past years, you have an opportunity to complete a form that is on the IRS web site for a last time grace period. Also, be sure that your Assembly EIN (Employee Identification Number) is linked at the Supreme Council. The legal department can assist you with this. If you do not file this year, there is a very good chance that your Assembly will loose its tax free standing! Please see elsewhere for an important message to Color Corps Commanders. As always, thank you all for everything you consistently do for the Order and the Fourth Degree. May God bless you and your loved ones, SK Robert J. Bob Grabasky, PSD District Master 11

State Golf..
