She is currently in a rehab center. Her daughter has set up a meal train for her and Ed. Below is the link. Could you maybe pass it around to the Knights at the State level and see if anyone might be interested in helping out? Meal Train Link: Thanks. Jim Lockwood An Invitation from Gate of Heaven Parish, Lancaster, NH Gate of Heaven Parish will be hosting Gate of Mercy, a day-long celebration of faith on Sunday August 7, 2016 from 11:30am-7:30pm at All Saints Church, 163 Main Street in Lancaster, NH. This major event will include fun activities for all ages, inspiring talks, a bouncy house and games for kids, a bagged lunch, BBQ dinner, ice cream social, live music, and prayer. Chris Padgett, a nationally known Catholic speaker, musician, and evangelist, will be headlining the event. Gate of Mercy is part of the world-wide celebration of the "Year of Mercy" proclaimed by Pope Francis for The Pope has asked all Christians to reflect and celebrate God's forgiveness and mercy in a special way this year. All Saints Church was chosen to house the "holy door" for the north country of New Hampshire, a sign that God welcomes all, especially those who are imperfect, into his house. The holy door is open daily from 10am-6pm throughout the year. Fr. Matthew Mason, pastor of Gate of Heaven Parish, says, "I encourage all Catholics in the north country and all people of good will to walk through the holy door this year as a prayerful reminder of God's great love for us. The Gate of Mercy celebration on August 7 is a perfect opportunity to visit the church and celebrate with believers from across the state." All are welcome to Gate of Mercy. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required by July 25. To register or for more information please visit the parish website at gateofheavennh.org < Mark M. E. 6 .Protect the order Brothers: As with any enterprise that wants to maintain its individuality and personality it is important to protect those signs, names and symbols that set them apart from all others. This is done through the acquisition of a registration mark from the government in which the entity exists. In the US and most of the western world this is referred to as a trademark, marcus registrad or (enlarged for clarity). You may have noticed that the Emblem of our Order, the names K of C and Knights of Columbus all bear this significant mark. The names and the emblem should always be displayed with the mark. The Fourth Degree Emblem is similarly registered and protected. This is a signal to all that the use is restricted to the holder of the registration. In our instance the holder is the Supreme Council, not the individual Councils or the State Council. In short O N L Y the Supreme Council can say who can use those registered items. A blanket permissive use by a Council for a Council/Assembly function only (dinner dance, food drive, degree exemplification and the like) has been granted by Supreme. However, or more to the point HOWEVER, the names or the emblem may not be used in a business enterprise without the explicit written permission of Supreme. Gaming operations by a Council are, by New Hampshire law, a not-for-profit business venture and neither the Emblems of the Order, the names K of C or Knights of Columbus are to be used in identifying the operation of such enterprises with the Order. Gaming operations need to be registered with the Secretary of State and received a license/permit from the lottery agency. The volunteer work by Members of a council at such events may be a Council function, but the organization and operation of the enterprise is not a Council function. Thus Council # is supporting a poker night at (where ever) and Members can, and should identify themselves. The Council cannot register themselves as the operator of the gaming night with the Secretary of State, a separate associated entity can. Once registered with the Secretary of State the Council then becomes, even if only for gaming, a business enterprise regulated by the State. We are a fraternity, a 501(c) 8, not a standalone charity under IRS law. There are very significant legal ramifications for violating this stricture. We are, however, a charity under the very broad definition of a charity under NH law. If your Council has a gaming operation, immediately file a change of name with the Secretary of State that removes the phrase Knights of Columbus of K of C from the name of the registered enterprise. The name of the separate entity can be Council NH Bingo (or whatever), just avoid the registered names or the Emblem of the Order. Set up separate books (a requirement of State law anyway), rules, officers (can be the same a Council Officers), etc. as if a Home Association, for the gaming operation. Keep all finances, records of the gaming operation separate from those of the Council. Do not discuss the business of the separate gaming operation during regular business meetings of the Council. Continue to accept donations from that separate business enterprise into your charitable accounts, but treat them as an outside source of revenue, not as internal Council funds. Yes, this is a bit of extra work, but it protects the Order from any untoward incidents that may arise. Oh yes, while BINGO is often a trademark of the Catholic Church for fund raising, gaming operations are frowned upon by the Church in general and the diocese in particular. We need to be about our work of helping people, not having state or federal agencies dictating how or what we do as an Order, that is the bottom line. Page 6 of 13

7 NO COUNCIL SHOULD HAVE ITSELF REGISTERED WITH THE SECRETARY OF STATE! If your Council is otherwise registered with the Secretary of State, unregistered immediately. If a bank says that you have to be registered with the Secretary of State, tell them they are misinformed. Your State Officers can assist you in this educational process. If they will not budge, there are several banks in NH that know the Order very well and who are happy to hold council funds. Jordan Ulery, State Advocate CAMP FATIMA CAMPOREE Announcement All forms for the Camp Fatima Camporee are on line. Please note that some changes have been made. We know have to have a lifeguard on duty at the beach area for swimming. So the beach will be limited to those times. If anyone is a certified lifeguard, and would be available for Camporee, please contact Ron Metevier. Due to the cost of the lifeguards, we have changed the cost of the cabins, campers and tents to all except those who participated at Fatima Workday. Please check the changes, and read all rules and waterfront and boating regulations! Your compliance with all regulations is sincerely appreciated. Anyone not in compliance will be asked to leave. All GK's, DD's and state officers please pass on this message to all councils. Thanks you, Ron Metevier, Chairman All paperwork due August 15th, 2016!!! 8 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 28, 2016 FOR MORE INFORMATION: OFFICE OF COMMUNICATION DAVID A. THIBAULT APPOINTED SUPERINTENDENT OF CATHOLIC SCHOOLS FOR THE DIOCESE OF MANCHESTER (MANCHESTER, NH) The Most Reverend Peter A. Libasci, Bishop of Manchester, announced today the appointment of David A. Thibault as the Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Manchester. Dave has a proven record of being able to think outside the box, build relationships, and ensure the Catholic identity of the organizations he has overseen, said Bishop Libasci. I am impressed by his bold and innovative approach, and I look forward to working with him in the months and years ahead. As Superintendent, Mr. Thibault will be responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and administration of innovative plans, programs, and policies to support and grow the ministry of Catholic school education. In addition, he will oversee the work of the Executive Director of Diocesan Camps and will serve as the Chair of their Boards of Directors. Mr. Thibault will join the diocesan staff on Monday, July 1, Mr. Thibault graduated from Franciscan University of Steubenville in Steubenville, OH, with a degree in education, and earned his Masters of Education from Northeastern University in Boston. He served as a teacher at Holy Name School in West Roxbury, MA and Marshall Simonds Middle School in Burlington, MA. He was then Associate Principal at Newport Middle School, Newport, NH and the Headmaster of Mount Royal Academy in Sunapee, NH before he was named as Executive Director of Diocesan Camps for the Diocese of Manchester. Mr. Thibault lives in Newport, NH with his wife and nine children; they are parishioners at St. Patrick Parish in Newport. Mr. Thibault will replace Fr. John Fortin, O.S.B., who has served as Superintendent since June of 2013 and who is being recalled by his religious superior to return to teaching at Saint Anselm College. Fr. John s accomplishments in the three years he served as Superintendent are many, and his achievements will long be valued and remembered, said Bishop Libasci, but most of all I am going to miss his enthusiasm, collegiality, and tremendous sense of humor. 9 Support the Conscience Protection Act of 2016 Dear Brother Knight, Your action is needed to urge Congress to protect the rights of healthcare professionals, Catholic hospitals, and all people of goodwill who object to participating in abortion. The Conscience Protection Act of 2016 (HR 4828) gives these conscientious objectors a means for protecting their conscience rights through legal action. A vote on this critical legislation in the House of Representatives is imminent. Contact your member of Congress today and ask them to support this important legislation. Immediate action is necessary. Right now, Catholic schools, churches, and other faith-based organizations are being forced to cover abortion even late-term abortion in their health plans. Right now, Catholic health professionals are being forced to provide and participate in abortions. Contact your elected representatives today and ask them to support the Conscience Protection Act. Thank you for doing your part to protect conscience rights and to build a Culture of Life. Fraternally, Carl A. Anderson Supreme Knight Knights of Columbus 1 Columbus Plaza New Haven, CT (203) Page 9 of 13

10 Following a week of violence across the United States, the Knights of Columbus has called for a novena of prayer to heal the wounds and divisions afflicting this country. Knights, their families and all people of good will are encouraged to join in the novena (nine days of prayer) that will run from July by praying St. Francis of Assisi s Prayer for Peace: Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy; O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. The violent episodes of the past week have shocked the conscience of our country, said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. Through this prayer, each of us has the opportunity to help transcend hatred and violence by personally committing to the concepts of love of neighbor, peace and forgiveness that are central to an authentic embrace of Christianity. It is our hope that, from coast to coast, those who pray this prayer will become true instruments of peace. Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore also urged people to join this prayer campaign: During this Year of Mercy, let us pray for an end to violence and senseless killings, he said. Through our prayers and good works, may we help build a society that is merciful, just and peaceful. Knights of Columbus 1 Columbus Plaza New Haven, CT (203) Page 10 of 13

11 Exemplary Knights of Columbus Programs Worthy State Deputies, As we begin a new fraternal year and embark on a new chapter in the Order's history, the Supreme Council's communications team and Columbia editors are looking forward to hearing about the many great charitable programs and activities in your jurisdictions. Please note that the standard means of submission of photos and reports of council activities will remain the Knights in Action address knightinaction@kofc.org and online form. And to better assist your councils in this regard, we recently updated the Knights in Action website to include Frequently Asked Questions and Photo Tips. See: kofc.org/knightsinaction In addition, if you are aware of any exemplary charitable works that go above and beyond, or other K of C- related stories in your jurisdiction that may be worth telling, please let us know, so that we might consider additional coverage potentially sending a professional photographer, videographer and/or freelance journalist. Of course, we will continue to feature and promote programs such as the Ultrasound Initiative and Knights of Columbus Coats for Kids, as well as partnerships with organizations like Special Olympics and the Global Wheelchair Mission, but for this purpose, we are primarily interested in hearing about activities and events that we might not be aware of. Is there a program, initiative or event on the state or local level that merits special attention e.g., the kind of program that you might submit for any of the International Service Awards? Is there a specific photo opportunity that would help to present a young and dynamic image of the Order? Is there a council in your jurisdiction that models the Building the Domestic Church While Strengthening Our Parish initiative in a particular way? If so, please send your recommendations, including a brief description and relevant contact information, to storyideas@kofc.org. Here are just a few examples of Columbia articles and short K of C promo videos of initiatives we ve featured in the past: An Oregon council brought the Food for Families initiative to a new level, donating more than 15,000 pounds of produce from the council's food garden: A Dallas-area council's "Knight Hands" program consists of 35 handyman Knights working together to help meet various needs in their parish and community: College Knights support the Knights of Columbus Christian Refugee Relief Fund through a basketball tournament: Knights in New Jersey raise money for Wounded Warriors through a tank pull: Again, we look forward to hearing from you. In the meantime, I wish you a happy Canada Day and Independence Day weekend. Page 11 of 13
