Jim Lockwood An Invitation from Gate of Heaven Parish, Lancaster, NH Gate of Heaven Parish will be hosting Gate of Mercy, a day-long celebration of faith on Sunday August 7, 2016 from 11:30am-7:30pm at All Saints Church, 163 Main Street in Lancaster, NH. This major event will include fun activities for all ages, inspiring talks, a bouncy house and games for kids, a bagged lunch, BBQ dinner, ice cream social, live music, and prayer. Chris Padgett, a nationally known Catholic speaker, musician, and evangelist, will be headlining the event. Gate of Mercy is part of the world-wide celebration of the "Year of Mercy" proclaimed by Pope Francis for The Pope has asked all Christians to reflect and celebrate God's forgiveness and mercy in a special way this year. All Saints Church was chosen to house the "holy door" for the north country of New Hampshire, a sign that God welcomes all, especially those who are imperfect, into his house. The holy door is open daily from 10am-6pm throughout the year. Fr. Matthew Mason, pastor of Gate of Heaven Parish, says, "I encourage all Catholics in the north country and all people of good will to walk through the holy door this year as a prayerful reminder of God's great love for us. The Gate of Mercy celebration on August 7 is a perfect opportunity to visit the church and celebrate with believers from across the state." All are welcome to Gate of Mercy. 6 State Youth Director Searching for Volunteers We are looking for a council that would be interested in hosting the State Soccer Challenge this fall. If there is a council interested send Ken Goddard kennygoddard@comcast.net an letting him know the date and place where they would like to hold it. Jim Lockwood State Youth Director During the Organizational Meeting of State Deputies in New Haven, Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore calls all Knights to be good men filled with the Holy Spirit and faith who recruit for the Church and the Order. The full text of his homily can be found below. More information about the State Deputies Meeting can be found at Barnabas and the Knights Homily given by Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori during the Knights of Columbus State Deputies Meeting, June 11, 2016, the Feast of St. Barnabas Today the Church remembers the Apostle Barnabas. Though not one of the original Twelve Apostles, Barnabas, as we shall later see, came to be called an Apostle. Happily, today s Scripture reading from the Acts of the Apostles paints a portrait of Barnabas whose name means son of consolation. All of us can be consoled as we reflect on this depiction of Barnabas and his work of spreading the Gospel in the earliest days of the Church because his life and example applies to us as leaders in the Order in four ways. Let s see how this is so. A Good Man Filled with the Holy Spirit and Faith First, St. Luke, the author of the Acts of the Apostles, tells us that Barnabas was a good man filled with the Holy Spirit and faith. As today s reading opens, Barnabas is living in Jerusalem in the days following the coming of Page 6 of 14

the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. We see how the Gospel quickly went beyond Jerusalem and spread to Antioch where many people were being won over to the Lord. The Apostles decided to send Barnabas to have a firsthand look at what was happening in Antioch, a Greek and Roman city in modern-day Turkey. If I could put it this way, Barnabas was sent to Antioch as a layman. He was a disciple, baptized in the Holy Spirit on fire with the love for the Lord and zeal for the Gospel. Clearly, the Apostles knew Barnabas and trusted him. They saw that he was a man of virtue, a man in whom the Gospel had found a home. They could count on him to size up the situation accurately and to fan into flame the faith that had spread to a city that one day would be nicknamed, the cradle of Christianity. That is precisely what Barnabas did. A man who was himself filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit could recognize the workings of God s grace in the Christian community at Antioch. He could be counted on to encourage these new followers of Christ to remain faithful to the Lord in firmness of heart As state deputies, you were chosen by your brother Knights because they regard you as good men, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith. They regard you as disciples of the Lord Jesus, as active members of the Church, as men of virtue who are trustworthy fellow Knights who will also be co-workers with bishops and priests, especially our chaplains. Accordingly, your brother Knights have sent you on a mission to travel around your jurisdictions to foster the growth of the Knights of Columbus, to encourage the recruitment of new members and to help these men and their families to live the Gospel principles of charity, unity and fraternity. First Class Recruiter A second aspect of St. Luke s portrait of Barnabas is that he was a good recruiter. When he arrived at Antioch, he not only encouraged those who had already become Christians to remain strong in the faith we also read that large numbers of people were added to the Lord. In other words, Barnabas didn t merely praise the status quo but instead contributed to the dynamism of the Christian community at Antioch. We might say that he made it an evangelized and an evangelizing community. As a result, many new Christians were recruited. But there is a second way in which Barnabas was a first-class recruiter. We read that he went to Tarsus to look for Saul, known to us, of course, as Paul. Evidently, Barnabas persuaded Paul that he should come to Antioch to assist in foster the growth of the first Christian community on Hellenic soil. I m going to guess that Paul might not have been the easiest man to recruit. Be that as it may, Paul comes to Antioch with Barnabas and then things really take off. Thus begins the Church s mission to the Gentiles. In a short time, Paul would become the leader and Barnabas his assistant. Barnabas did not resent Paul s rising prominence but instead rejoiced because he was focused not on himself but on the mission. Well, it s pretty obvious how this applies to us as leaders of the Knights of Columbus. Through these days, you are receiving much guidance and encouragement with regard to the recruitment of new members. You are being sent from New Haven to your jurisdictions with a mission similar to that of Barnabas: To grow the Order, to develop more Star Councils and to reach out to younger men and their families, for the good of the Order and for the strengthening of family life, aware that the Gospel spreads whenever there are strong families families that can rightly be called domestic churches. So ask St. Barnabas to make you and your co-workers Page 7 of 14

first-class recruiters. But there is another way in which you, like Barnabas must recruit: It is essential that we attract and raise up excellent leaders in the Order. Just as Barnabas went out of his way to recruit Paul for the mission at Antioch, so too we need to go out of our way to find and raise up those men who will be capable of taking leadership positions in the Order and we should rejoice if we find leaders who overshadow or outshine us. After all, it s not about us it s all about the mission. So ask yourselves: Is there a Saul of Tarsus somewhere in my jurisdiction I can recruit not only for membership but also for potential leadership? Teamwork A third aspect in St. Luke s portrait of St. Barnabas is teamwork. Barnabas is called a prophet because he taught God s word authentically, but we should also note that he was indeed part of a team of teachers and prophets entirely dedicated to spreading the Gospel in Asia Minor; St. Luke has even provided us with their names. Not only did Barnabas not resent the rising prominence of St. Paul, he was a valued member of a team dedicated to the spread of the Gospel and I m going to guess that Barnabas lent to that team cohesion and coherence. The lesson here is obvious: No one in a fraternal order should be a lone ranger; rather, we are all part of a team. As state deputies, one of your most important jobs is to form an excellent team, and to provide leadership to that team so that it works well together such that it advances the mission of the Order in ways that make sense to our brother Knights and to those whom we seek to recruit. Fostering teamwork, as you know, takes patience and perseverance. Fostering Vocations A final aspect of St. Luke s portrait of Barnabas is his ordination. Together with Saul, he was set apart for the work of the Gospel by prayer and the laying on of hands the essence of the sacrament of Holy Orders and then they were sent on their missionary journeys. Because of Barnabas close association with St. Paul known as the Apostle Christian tradition also accords the title of Apostle to Barnabas. This aspect of Luke s portrait reminds us of another aspect of our leadership: namely, the longstanding commitment of the Order to priestly vocations. Barnabas whom we met as a layman ends up an Apostle just as some join the Order as lay persons often in our college councils and through the support of the Knights answer a call to priesthood. Raising up priestly vocations is deeply rooted in the mission of the Knights because we were founded by a holy priest, Father McGivney, and the cooperation of the laity and the ordained is a hallmark of the Order as well as a great source of strength for the Church s mission to spread the Gospel. Conclusion So, as this important organizational meeting proceeds, St. Barnabas gives us much to think about and much to pray about. For now let us ask him to pray for us, for our families, and for our jurisdictions that we might serve them in the same spirit as he served the Church of Antioch such Page 8 of 14

that large numbers will be added to our beloved Order. Vivat Jesus! Knights of Columbus 1 Columbus Plaza New Haven, CT (203) Dear Brother Knight, St. John Paul II s role as a driving force in the fall of communist rule in Central and Eastern Europe is the focus of a new documentary illustrating how the late pope insured a revolution of conscience that was pivotal in the collapse of the Iron Curtain in The documentary will air on public television across the United States, premiering on June 3. Narrated by actor Jim Caviezel and featuring original music by renowned composer Joe Kraemer (Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, Jack Reacher), Liberating a Continent: John Paul II and the Fall of Communism tells this story using rare archival footage and exclusive interviews with several heads of state, historians, foreign policy experts, church leaders and close personal acquaintances of the late pontiff, including Supreme Knight Carl Anderson; papal biographer George Weigel; John Paul s longtime assistant Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz of Kraków; and Richard Allen, Ronald Reagan s National Security Advisor. The 90-minute film recounts Karol Wojtyła s growth from an underground seminarian to his appointment as archbishop of Kraków and to his election to the papacy in As archbishop, Wojtyła developed tools for resistance to communist rule that were grounded in defense of human rights and the reclaiming of Poland s Catholic identity. This documentary, through interviews with historians and journalists who had access to recently declassified KGB documents, illustrates the vast Soviet campaign to counteract John Paul II s moral crusade. The film follows the wave of free thought that seized the Soviet bloc following the Page 9 of 14

pope s epic nine-day pilgrimage to Poland in June By his actions and his words, John Paul II inspired a thirst for freedom that would evolve into the Solidarity movement, said Anderson. Without his spiritual support, Solidarity s success would not have been possible, and without Solidarity, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Revolution of 89 would never have happened. Knights of Columbus 1 Columbus Plaza New Haven, CT (203) Protect the order Brothers: As with any enterprise that wants to maintain its individuality and personality it is important to protect those signs, names and symbols that set them apart from all others. This is done through the acquisition of a registration mark from the government in which the entity exists. In the US and most of the western world this is referred to as a trademark, marcus registrad or (enlarged for clarity). You may have noticed that the Emblem of our Order, the names K of C and Knights of Columbus all bear this significant mark. The names and the emblem should always be displayed with the mark. The Fourth Degree Emblem is similarly registered and protected. This is a signal to all that the use is restricted to the holder of the registration. In our instance the holder is the Supreme Council, not the individual Councils or the State Council. In short O N L Y the Supreme Council can say who can use those registered items. A blanket permissive use by a Council for a Council/Assembly function only (dinner dance, food drive, degree exemplification and the like) has been granted by Supreme. However, or more to the point HOWEVER, the names or the emblem may not be used in a business enterprise without the explicit written permission of Supreme. Gaming operations by a Council are, by New Hampshire law, a not-for-profit business venture and neither the Emblems of the Order, the names K of C or Knights of Columbus are to be used in identifying the operation of such enterprises with the Order. Gaming operations need to be registered with the Secretary of State and received a license/permit from the lottery agency. The volunteer work by Members of a council at such events may be a Council function, but the organization and operation of the enterprise is not a Council function. Thus Council # is supporting a poker night at (where ever) and Members can, and should identify themselves. The Council cannot register themselves as the operator of the gaming night with the Secretary of State, a separate associated entity can. Once registered with the Secretary of State the Council then becomes, even if only for gaming, a business enterprise regulated by the State. We are a fraternity, a 501(c) 8, not a standalone charity under IRS law. There are very Page 10 of 14

significant legal ramifications for violating this stricture. We are, however, a charity under the very broad definition of a charity under NH law. If your Council has a gaming operation, immediately file a change of name with the Secretary of State that removes the phrase Knights of Columbus of K of C from the name of the registered enterprise. The name of the separate entity can be Council NH Bingo (or whatever), just avoid the registered names or the Emblem of the Order. Set up separate books (a requirement of State law anyway), rules, officers (can be the same a Council Officers), etc. as if a Home Association, for the gaming operation. Keep all finances, records of the gaming operation separate from those of the Council. Do not discuss the business of the separate gaming operation during regular business meetings of the Council. Continue to accept donations from that separate business enterprise into your charitable accounts, but treat them as an outside source of revenue, not as internal Council funds. Yes, this is a bit of extra work, but it protects the Order from any untoward incidents that may arise. Oh yes, while BINGO is often a trademark of the Catholic Church for fund raising, gaming operations are frowned upon by the Church in general and the diocese in particular. We need to be about our work of helping people, not having state or federal agencies dictating how or what we do as an Order, that is the bottom line. NO COUNCIL SHOULD HAVE ITSELF REGISTERED WITH THE SECRETARY OF STATE! If your Council is otherwise registered with the Secretary of State, unregistered immediately. If a bank says that you have to be registered with the Secretary of State, tell them they are misinformed. Your State Officers can assist you in this educational process. If they will not budge, there are several banks in NH that know the Order very well and who are happy to hold council funds.
