PSD Joel Plante, DM FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 24, 2016 FOR MORE INFORMATION: MELANIE ENGLISH , EXT. 166 DIOCESE OF MANCHESTER SEEKS NOMINATIONS FOR VITA ET CARITAS AWARD (MANCHESTER, NH) The Diocese of Manchester is currently seeking nominations for the Vita et Caritas Award (For Life and Love Award) given to a volunteer of a non-profit organization who makes significant contributions that help transform the lives of women, children and families. The non-profit organization will also receive a $2,500 grant. The recipient will be honored on September 8 at the annual Bishop s Summer Reception, celebrating the success of the Bishop s Charitable Assistance Fund campaign. This annual award is given in honor of the memory of Ruthie Ford, whose life reflected Catholic ideals and tireless dedication to service in the cause of helping women, children and families. After Ruthie s death in 2012, her family worked with the Bishop of Manchester to establish the Vita ET Caritas Award. Ruthie was one of the first supporters as well as a director of what today is the Bishop s Charitable Assistance Fund. Page 2 of 13

3 An application form and information is available on the Diocesan website at Nominations may be submitted electronically or through the mail. The Bishop s Charitable Assistance Fund will evaluate all applications and recommend the Award winner to the Bishop for final approval. Applications are due by June State Family Director Report Worthy Brothers, As a family of Knights, it is all of our duties to do what we can to make our family shine. As we go into June and the elections of our leaders for the next year, it is getting harder and harder for some councils to find men to run for the different positions. Why? Many reasons and here are a few that come to mind, 1 The GK seems to have to do all the work then it is burn out and he s gone after his term is over. 2 The men are tired of paying dues only to go to meetings to hear arguments on where the money is going. 3 The meetings are too long. 4 No socials to keep the men interested. Let us all pull together and bring new life into our families. My idea is to have Officer rotation, meaning you make a list of all the positions as they are ranked and every two years the ranks move up the latter per say. This is done by one simple way. Set all your officers up to start with then the lowest man on the ladder needs to find a new member and get him to his third degree level. On the second year he is elected into the last position and everyone else moves up one step. This will educate all the members, to all the aspects of the council and will be more informed as a grand knight. Also socials are a very important part of our council family relationship. A family that plays and works together will be a happier family. Do not be afraid to take the office and start leading your council in the right direction. The State Council has people willing to talk to and help you and your council if needed. We are here for you as a family. Let us all as a family work together and build a strong family of Knights for NH. Brothers start your rebuilding with your officers, council and council families socials then with your programs. A good program is the Family of the month program. It s good for moral and new members. Starting in July the State council will be giving one statue a month of the holy family. The statue will go to one of the family of the month recipients each month, giving out at the quarterlies. The only way to get a chance of getting a statue is by sending in a copy of the form for the award to the State Deputy. If you need any info or help please call, text or me with your name and council number so I can get back to you. I am not going to set a goal that is unreachable, so my goal this year is to get at least a third of the councils sending in family of the month reports ( 22 councils) Please let your council be one of the first 22 councils. May God Bless You and your Families. State Family Director Paul Vien paul.508@aol.com Page 3 of 13

4 Message from the District Master Invitations Worthy Faithful Navigators, We have several opportunities coming up to assist the diocese and our brother Knights. Please pass the word in your respective Assemblies and make the effort to gather as many men as you can to participate. First is the passing of the Silver Rose to the jurisdiction of Vermont. This will take place on June 19. We need men in regalia to present the rose to the State Deputy of Vermont. Contact Paul McManus for further details. Second is the exemplification of the Fourth Degree of the Order scheduled for June 25th. This will take place at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish on Lafayette Road in Hampton. Muster time is 11 AM. If you wish to participate in the meals and the entire day of activity I urge you to contact 4th Degree Secretary Hector St. Jacques to make your intentions known and pay your fees. Remember that there is still time to bring that new recruit to the degree but you need to hurry it along to make it all happen. Don't forget the ad book. Help us fund the Ladies program by supporting that effort. Contact Bill McCarthy for additional details. Fraternally, Joel Plante - District Master State Church Director Report Brothers: Each year from June 21 st through July 4 th the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops designates time, known as the Fortnight for Freedom, for us to hold events in recognition of and to pray for the defense of our religious freedoms. There is no doubt that there is an increasing hostility to Christian values and religious liberty in our culture. In my May Update, I respectfully asked that all Councils plan to pray the Patriotic Rosary with their church communities during the Fortnight of Freedom. If we can get every Council to pray the Patriotic Rosary during the two week period, it is conceivable to think that the Patriotic Rosary will be prayed multiple times each day during the Fortnight for Freedom. It is easy to follow. The template will again be included as an attachment in the Weekly Briefing. I know that once you pray the prayer with your parish community, it will become the basis for a frequent gathering with the community. It will turn into a monthly event as it has done in the Exeter community. Please me and let me know if your Council will participate and on what date during the Fortnight. If you want to bring a smile to the face of our Blessed Mother, this will certainly do it! Vivat Jesus Rob Eib State Church Director Page 4 of 13

If you can get members through a degree be sure to file the form 100 with Supreme by 4 o clock June 30 th. Filing can be done either by or regular mail with being the preferred method. 8 State VAVS Representative Report Dear Brother Knights We are going into our sixth year with our annual NH Freedom Cup has assisted veterans caught in the transition process of returning from deployment often times facing unemployment. Once again I would like to express gratitude to the following councils and assemblies for their continued participation in and sponsorship of the NH Freedom Cup Golf Tournament. Goffstown council # 5112, N. Conway Council # 7575, Greenville Council # 8016 Londonderry Council # Farmington Council # and Manchester Assembly # 626 As we draw near to this year s tournament, our efforts need to be stepped up to provide the much needed assistance to help our veterans and their families. The Knights of Columbus has 67 Councils and 23 Assemblies. Imagine if every Council and Assembly donated $50.00 or $ each toward the NH Freedom Cup. That would be a total donation of $ $ 6750! We realize that in these economic times that you are asked to give to many worthy causes. Our veterans have served our nation to preserve our rights and our freedom. Now they return home to find unemployment, homelessness. With rising cost of living, and they struggle to provide for their families. I can only ask you all too strongly to support the NH Freedom Cup. Whether it s a gas card to the veteran to his or her next medical appointment or it may be the grocery card that feed a veteran s families, your generosity will be warmth and comforting to our veterans and their families. As before, I encourage each council or assembly to consider making your charitable donation count twice. Our councils and assemblies do so much to support charitable efforts and they readily support and appreciate the efforts of America s fighting men and women. Please consider recognizing a brother Knight for their outstanding work by sponsoring a knight to a round of golf in the 2015 NH Freedom Cup Golf Tournament. As you see I have enclosed a copy of our Newsletter and a sponsorship brochure with prices and schedule of this year event, again it will be held at Candia Woods on Friday June 26, Your support and the support of each council and assembly will make a difference to those veterans families who really need your help and assistance. Those who go to war put their lives on the line for people they don t even know. Helping them is the least that we as Americans, can do in return. Vivat Jesus, Robert W. Garand State VAVS Representative Cc: Wayne Griffin, State Deputy Joel Plante, District Master Dear Brother Knight, The plight of Christians in the Middle East continues to be dire. The Christian populations in both Iraq and Syria have fallen to a fraction of their previous numbers. Many have been martyred, others have been displaced or had to flee for their lives. The Knights of Columbus continues to support the needs of these Christians, having raised more than $10.5 million on their behalf, and having supported projects with that money to provide food, clothing, shelter, catechesis, general relief, medical assistance, education and assistance for other Page 8 of 13

9 critical needs. As part of these efforts, last week Supreme Knight Carl Anderson gave congressional testimony of the plight of Middle Eastern Christians. He laid out a six point plan to secure their future in the region. The points he made have been suggested by John Allen of CRUX as important issues for the candidates in this year's election and can be read here. Last week the supreme knight also co-authored a piece with Archbishop Jean Clement Jeanbart of Aleppo, Syria. It can be read here.
