9 SWAMP PONDERINGS "What Could Have Been Said?" Aunt Ruth was my Granny's sister. Normally, she was a quiet, sweet lady. She and Uncle Ray owned a little store selling grocery items and offered a small grill. It was fun to visit them, because they always had something to give you. It may be some good food from the grill, or, it could be a new gadget they discovered and were trying out in their store. Uncle Ray would let you look at it, touch it, let you use it, then ask for money to pay for it. Usually, our visits wouldn't last longer than a few hours. The two kept pretty busy. They never rushed us out or anything like that. In fact, they always wanted us to stay longer - even spend the night. On one Saturday visit, we did. Granny wanted to go see Aunt Ruth, who had been sick. Granny was at an age where the family did not want her to travel alone. No one was available to ride with her, so I volunteered. She seemed to be happy with my company. We were not planning to stay overnight, so we got into Granny's little Datsun and took off. She was a good driver, and made many trips on her own, and perhaps, could have made this trip without any problems. But, this trip was a little longer and she welcomed the company. She was happy. I was a content grandchild volunteer....it was cozy...it was fun!... We made some "necessary" stops (and a few "unnecessary" stops) along the way. This put us arriving a little later than usual. Our visit was pleasant and way too brief for their liking. Aunt Ruth insisted we spend the night and go to church with her the following day. It was getting late, and I could sense Granny was getting tired; so, we agreed to stay. Since going to church required clean clothes, and we had not brought a change of clothes with us, our clothes had to be washed and ironed. That night, I took my shower and was given a robe to wear while my clothes were washed. When they were dry, they were ironed, and became untouchable until the next day. My robe was my evening attire, and my bed clothes if I so chose. Since I had to sleep on the couch, in the living room, I so chose! Have you ever tried to sleep in a robe, under covers, in a public area? It was a bit difficult to rest. Once you fought the robe and got to a resting position, you really didn't want to move again. I awoke several times checking my robe and cover. The next morning, I was allowed to put my fresh, washed, ironed clothes on. I felt so relieved when I was able to dress in my own clothes. They were clean...lightly starched...and ironed to perfection. They even had a nice fresh scent to them....you better believe I was very careful to keep them in that condition until after church!... When we arrived at church, Aunt Ruth wanted to introduce us to everyone. We met her friends, her enemies, her Sunday School teacher and her pastor. After Sunday School, Aunt Ruth wanted us all to meet in the hallway, so we could enter the sanctuary together. It was a proud moment for Aunt Ruth to have her extended family at church, since none of her immediate family attended. She was "as proud as a peacock" when she strutted into the sanctuary with her family trailing behind. We came to the bench where she usually sat, but found it occupied by a stranger...a first-time attender. Aunt Ruth approached her with a smile and said, "This is my seat, dear." The woman and her small daughter apologized and moved to the end of the row. Aunt Ruth responded with, "No, no, dearie. This whole row is for us." The woman apologized, again. Aunt Ruth smiled, then called one of the deacons who was standing nearby, "Benjamin, could you help this lady find a seat?" The deacon was obliged to do so. I could hear him apologize to the lady and her daughter as he led them away. Granny and I, both, were embarrassed; and, Granny tried to tell Aunt Ruth we could sit anywhere. But, Aunt Ruth insisted on her usual seat for her prized guests....i often wondered if the woman and her child ever came back!... What else could have been said to a first-time visitor? I'm sure this type of thing doesn't happen now. Any visitor, first-time or otherwise, should be made to feel accepted and at home - not embarrassed and relocated! ("What Could Have Been Said?" continued on back)

10 ..."What Could Have Been Said?," cont... Thom Rainer, President of LifeWay Christian Resources, shared an , (5/20/2015), which offered, "Seven Things Church Members Should Say to Guests." They were: 1. "Thank you for being here." A basic acknowledgment of a visitor's presence with a "thank you for coming" will often open the door for their return. 2. "Let me help you with that." If a visitor is struggling with children, diaper bags, purses, umbrellas, or other items, a kind gesture to hold something, or assist them, is often appreciated. Anyone, even other members, appreciates help in the midst of a struggle. 3. "Please take my seat." Or, better yet, "Please take this seat." Since the seat doesn't belong to you anyway, why not be willing to yield the seat to someone who is trying to find a place to sit. This especially works well if a new family is trying to sit together. 4. "Here is my contact number" ( or phone). "Please let me know if I can help in any way." Use this comment carefully, but if you feel okay with it, let it open the door of communication which will be much appreciated. 5. "Can I show you where you need to go?" In any size church, a visitor will need to know where the nursery, restrooms, Sunday School and small groups rooms, or even the sanctuary is located. If you don't know, then help them find an usher who can help. 6. "Let me introduce you to...." Meeting other members in a positive way increases the return rate for visitors. You may introduce them to the pastor, church staff or leaders of their own age. They will appreciate the introductions. 7. "Would you join us for lunch?" This statement was offered last for two reasons. First, the situation must obviously be appropriate before you offer this invitation. Second, this approach has the highest guest return rate of any other. What could you say to a visitor? "You shall neither mistreat a stranger nor oppress him, for you were strangers once in the land of Egypt" (Exodus 22:21). "Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by doing so, some have entertained angels unawares" (Hebrew 13:2). Bro. Ron
