2 The Pastor s Desk Rev. Justin Terrell, Pastor justin@fbcfairburn.com Changing Lives This Summer There is no better time throughout the year than the summer months for fulfilling the Great Commission. With children out of school, longer periods of daylight available, and enjoyable weather, more ministry can be done in the summer than other times during the year. This is why we as a church take advantage of this season by hosting Vacation Bible School, going on two out-of-state mission trips, and operating several children's camps and events, among other ministry activities. While we all enjoy these opportunities and create many memories in the process, I want us to remember that the main reason we partake in these events is to see life-change take place through the gospel. The gospel is the only hope for a world that is lost and dying. Paul says, 'For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes" (Romans 1:16). It is the church's duty this summer to share this gospel with everyone we aim to reach. However, not only are we trying to generate life-change in the lives of others, we should seek God to bring lifechange to our hearts as well. The same gospel that saves a lost person is also the same message that continually molds believers into the image of Christ. It is through the daily denial of self and the daily surrender to Christ that any believer will experience spiritual growth. Therefore, as we enter into the summer months of ministry, I want our aim and vision to be about seeing life-change take place through the gospel of Jesus Christ not only for those who are lost, but also for those of us who are saved. However, it goes without saying that our efforts alone will never result in life-change. It is only through the power of the Holy Spirit that anyone's heart will be transformed into the image of God. Therefore, it is imperative that all of us constantly pray for the lost and for each other as we serve the Lord this summer. Music Ministry Rev. David Ray I want to thank each and every one of you for your prayers during this time of transition. I also want to thank you for your expressions of gratitude, your donations to the love offering, and your words of encouragement. The last six and one-half years have been a blessing in my life and that of my family. We will carry special memories of you as we continue to serve the Lord wherever He leads us. It was indeed my honor and a pleasure serving the LORD here at FBC Fairburn with you! Blessings! Left: David on the Sons of Jubal Trip to China & People s Republic of North Korea Above: The Ray Family Mr. Donny Thomas During the quarterly church conference, which was held on May 20, the Personnel Committee recommended Donny Thomas as the Interim Worship Pastor. Donny s first Sunday will be June 17. Donny & Rita have been members of FBC Fairburn for almost nine years. They are a part of Awakening, the young adults praise band, and assist in the College & Career Ministry. While working fulltime for Georgia Power, Donny is completing his Bachelors of Arts in Ministry from Luther Rice University; he has just two classes remaining. Welcome, Donny!

6 Women on Mission NEW WMU Logo National WMU introduced new branding elements March 30, including an updated trademark and tagline. Since 2006, our trademark incorporated the letters WMU with a larger M to place emphasis on missions. Now missions - the singular focus of WMU - is emphasized in our new tagline, Missions for Life TM. Missions for Life sums up the purpose of WMU in a number of ways, explained Julie Walters, communications specialist for national WMU. First, it communicates that WMU promotes a lifestyle that is focused on the mission of God. In addition, the word 'life' is holistic like WMU in that we offer resources for all life stages from preschool to adults that help develop confident missions disciples. Missions is also the pathway for many to hear and learn about Jesus, the Giver of eternal life. The new trademark or graphic is actually an updated version of the original one adopted in 1913 (pictured right). The original contains a number of elements, including the outline of a fish, an early Christian symbol; a flame or light representing the light of Christ in Christians to lead others to Him and to follow His light into the world; an open Bible representing knowledge of Scripture and teaching missions-related passages; and a globe expressing the idea of an outward focus on the peoples of the world. WMU s new trademark incorporates two elements from this original version: the fish and a stylized circle or world. The colors of blue and green are fresh and appealing to both genders, and used in a stylized circle, they also express the idea of sharing Christ in our world, Walters said. We believe this new graphic celebrates our heritage while embracing today s opportunities by better reflecting the active, friendly, reliable, and invested mindset of those involved in global missions through WMU. (Article adapted from WMU web site) The Story Lives On Every two years the WMU introduces a new emphasis to help plan and focus the work in the local church. The WMU emphasis book for is The Story Lives On by Wanda S. Lee, National Executive Director of WMU. This book was chosen because this year begins a special time of preparation. WMU will celebrate its 125th anniversary in May The final celebration will be in June 2014 in Baltimore, Maryland. That city was the first home of national WMU. What are the stories that make up your life? Who influenced you toward faith? As we look closely at the stories of the Bible, we will discover how the ultimate story of God s love, the gift of His Son Jesus, lives on through the lives of those who have followed Him throughout the generations. Our stories matter. Why do our stories matter? As Christians, our stories matter because they testify to God s redemptive power. Wanda said the experience of Peter and John in Acts 4: challenged her to examine her own life and to rediscover her passion for sharing the story of Jesus. After being imprisoned and beaten for telling the story of Jesus they responded to threats of further persecution with this answer: We cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard. (NIV 1984) Twenty centuries later, we know His story because that first group of disciples and new believers kept telling the story of Jesus. We must keep the story living, not only through our words but also through our lives. In the twenty-first century, it is our responsibility to be like John and Peter in Acts 4. We must tell about what we have seen and heard....that is how the story will live on! Monthly Meetings Mae Cook WOM Will not meet as it is during VBS. USMC While completing his 19th reconnaissance mission in Vietnam in October of 1968, Lt. Clebe McClary was critically wounded during an enemy ambush on Hill #146. Clebe's bravery and leadership under fire resulted in his being presented with the Silver Star and the Bronze Star by the President of the United States. Although Clebe suffered the traumatic loss of an eye and arm, and was later told he would never walk again, he didn't lose the will to overcome his circumstances. Clebe McClary is living proof of the promise in Romans 5:3-5 that, "...we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us..." New Church Year A new church year begins after the summer. Over the next several weeks, the Nominating Committee and the Committee on Committees will begin their tasks of seeking individuals to serve within the church. It may be to serve on a committee, to teach a Sunday School Class, or to minister in a variety of areas. Pray and ask God where He would have you honor Him. If you are interested in a particular area, contact the church office at 770/ or joy@fbcfairburn.com. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God s varied grace. 1 Peter 4:10
