1 Week of November 6, 2011 Lessons for the Leader God has plans for everyone, and you are no exception. Seek an intimate relationship with God, and He will reveal His plans for your life in His time. Read 1 Samuel 16:1-3. God spoke to Samuel, giving Samuel a specific and important job to do. What was Samuel's response? Fear. Samuel feared the retaliation of a man a powerful king. How often is fear your reaction instead of obedience to God? Is God not more powerful than any man? Absolutely He is, and obedience is one way we worship our Almighty God and King. God knew King Saul watched every move His prophet, Samuel, made. Anointing another man as king would threaten King Saul's reign. God had a diversion plan for Samuel. Read 1 Samuel 16:4-5. How did the elders of Bethlehem react when they saw Samuel? They trembled in fear! As a prophet, Samuel sometimes came not in peace, but in judgment. This time Samuel came in peace with the intention of anointing a new king; however, he gave no reason for his visit other than the sacrifice God had commanded. Samuel had anointed Saul years before in a similar manner, in obedience to God's command. Samuel trusted God's plan for His people, and he did what God said. Samuel obeyed God. Read 1 Samuel 16:6-13. God knew who loved Him and whom He chose to be king. Throughout the entire selection process, Samuel conversed with God. Are you in constant conversation with God? How can you teach children to talk with God anytime, anywhere, about anything? How can you use Samuel's story to shift your focus to worshiping (and obeying) God ultimately developing a personal relationship with your heavenly Father? What do these symbols mean? 1a Application Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format. 1 Large Group Only Format: Follow all the numbers for a 45- to 60-minute large group only format. We'll learn how God sent a man to anoint a shepherd boy as king." 9aTell the Bible Story (7 minutes) Open your Bible to 1 Samuel and tell the story. Samuel Anointed David Based on 1 Samuel 16:1-13 God rejected, or said no to Saul as king over Israel. This meant that members of Saul's family would not become king after him. Samuel was very sad because of this. God told Samuel to fill his horn with oil. God sent Samuel to Bethlehem. Samuel was to go to the house of a man named Jesse to anoint one of Jesse's sons as a new king. Samuel asked God how he could go and do this because King Saul might hurt him. God told Samuel to take a cow to offer as a sacrifice and invite Jesse and his sons to come. A sacrifice was "an offering given to God." Page 2 of 16

3 Samuel did what God told him to do and traveled to Bethlehem. When Samuel arrived in Bethlehem, the people wanted to know why he was there. Samuel told the people he had come in peace and invited the people to the sacrifice. Jesse and his sons came to the sacrifice. When the men arrived, Samuel saw Eliab (ih LIGH ab). Samuel thought this was the son God wanted as king. God told Samuel not to just look at the outside appearance or looks of the man. God said Eliab was not the new king. Jesse presented seven of his sons to Samuel. None of these sons were the one God had chosen. Samuel asked Jesse if he had any other sons. Jesse told Samuel his youngest son worked in the fields watching sheep. Samuel said to get him. Everyone waited for David to arrive. God told Samuel to anoint David as the new king. So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David to one day be the new king. God guided David from that day forward. 10aReview the Bible Story (3 minutes) Print "Teaching Picture 10 David Anointed" (CD). Display the teaching picture. Invite children to tell about the picture. Ask: "What did Samuel do?" Listen to responses. Recap any story information not told. Comment: "Samuel did what God told him to do. Samuel anointed David as king. Add small amounts of food color to the solution and mix well. Cut construction paper into halves. Print "Allergy Alert" (CD), list bubble solution, and post. Let's make bubble prints. Keep your hands in your laps as I give instructions." Give each child a straw, paper, and a pan of solution. Describe: "Gently blow through the straw into the liquid to make bubbles [demonstrate]. When the bubbles are piled high, gently place your paper on top of the bubbles and let them pop [demonstrate]. The popped bubbles will make rings on the paper. We can use the markers to add features or other drawings to our prints." Assist children as they blow bubbles. Provide paper towels to blot excess solution. State: "You did what I said to make bubble prints. We can do what God says. We read the Bible to learn what God says to do." Talk about the Bible story as children make more prints. Refill pans as needed. Say: "Samuel anointed David with oil. David was to become the next king. Samuel did what God told him to do. We can learn to do what God says." State the Bible verse (Deuteronomy 8:6). Lead children to clean the area. Pray. I'll pass the bowl of carrots to everyone when I am done. Put a spoonful in your bowl." Assist children with scooping spoonfuls of shredded carrots from the bowl. Instruct: "Now, put a spoonful of crushed pineapple and a spoonful of yogurt in your bowl." Help as needed. Encourage children to gently mix the ingredients in their bowls together. Offer raisins to any children who would like to add them to their salads. Pray. Talk about the Bible story while the children enjoy the snack. Say: "God told Samuel to anoint a new king. Samuel was scared to go, but he went. Samuel did what God told him to do. We can read our Bibles to learn what God wants us to do. We can learn to do what God says." Lead children to clean the area. See what number is showing on the top of the cube. Find that number on the chart and do the activity." Invite all children to run, roll the cube, and do an action. Instruct: "This time, we'll run to the line, roll the cube, and find the number on the separate papers. The words on the papers are do what God says. That is what we are learning today. There are only four papers. Numbers five and six are not on the papers. If you roll a five or six, tell us something about the Bible story." Invite each child to run, roll the cube, and read a word or tell about the Bible story. Say: "God told Samuel to anoint a new king. Samuel was scared to go, but he went. Samuel did what God told him to do. We can read our Bibles to learn what God wants us to do. We can learn to do what God says." State the Bible verse (Deuteronomy 8:6). Choose a child to roll the cube and encourage all children to do the action. Continue until all children roll the cube. Pray. Let's make different structures by copying the pictures." Display structure cards and read aloud titles (structure types). Invite children to choose which models they want to build. Place children with common structures together to build so they can all see the picture. Encourage children to look at the pictures and build the structures. Review the Bible story as children build their structures. Direct children to walk around and look at the finished structures.
