Plan now to join us for this potluck get-together. Youth Car Wash Our thanks to everyone who let our youth wash their cars after worship on Sunday, October 29 and to everyone who drove by or in church made a donation for the cause. To date, our youth have received over $200 for their efforts. Out thanks to Jennifer Scott, our youth and to everyone else who helped with their event. Lakewood Christian Church, Thank you so much for your generous donation of $ for HEB gift cards, to HOT Veterans One Stop. As you know, needy veterans and their families in our community go without proper food, shelter, and many basic needs, medical care, job search, legal aid. While all of us are susceptible to hard times, veteran s children and older veterans are at most risk, and they make up the largest number of clients we serve. With the generous support of people like you, we will be able to help many of these veteran s families and individuals not only to meet essential daily needs, but to work toward a brighter future with our programs in job search, education, counseling, veteran benefits, civil legal assistance, and finding temporary housing. Sincerely, Delisa Russell

4 Minister s Insights and Inspiration Thanksgiving and Christmas are exciting, challenging, fun, exhausting and exhilarating times of the year. They are upon us, ready or not! The front page of this newsletter has vital information about Veterans Sunday, our Steering Board meeting, the Holiday Bake Sale, our Thanksgiving Sunday worship and lunch, the Biker Toy Pickup and Christmas. Please give these your careful attention. The other major event taking place is our Congregational meeting following our Thanksgiving worship and lunch on Sunday, November 19. This is a crucial meeting in the life of our congregation. Every member of Lakewood who can needs to be present. Three business items will be presented for consideration and approval. The first is the election of Church Officers for Our Nominating Team made up of Phil Roach, chair; Russell Scott, Gene Hall, Janice Kriegel and Alice Young has nominated a full slate of officers including receiving an affirmation from each candidate that they will serve. Three objectives have guided their work. First, securing adequate leadership for each area of our church life; Second, maintaining continuity to lead us during the transition time in which we find ourselves; and Third, giving new persons in our congregation an opportunity to serve along with the faithful who have served before. The second order of business is the approval of our General Program Budget for The Proposed Budget includes member giving, pledged and non-pledged, of $244,600; additional income from our Child Development Center and restitution of $38,500; Special Outreach giving of $2,100 and Other income of $2,600, a total of $287,800. Expenditures are projected as Mission, $7,100; Congregational Life including worship, Christian education and membership, $13,700; Physical Resources including utilities, insurance and debt retirement, $105,796; Administration, $33,284; and all Staff and childcare (including full funding of $74,120 for a new Senior Minister), $127,920. This is total Expenditures of $287,800. Our General Program Budget for 2017 is $303,974. The Proposed total of $287,800 for 2018 is $16,174 less than for our current year. There will be more detailed information about the Proposed Budget shared in the congregational meeting. The third business item will be the Assessment Report. The Report being submitted to the congregation has been compiled from the information in the original seventy three page Report submitted by our onsite Assessor, Roger McKinney; the responses of the forty seven persons who participated in the Appreciation Inquiry Session; the input from the sixty-five members who participated in the five church/home groups which met four times each during the summer; and a deliberative meeting of Phil Roach; Thad Barker; the Group Leaders of the five Church/Home Groups; Rick Cross, Terry Ermoian, Sue Lowry, Jennifer Roach, and Jim Young; and myself pulling all of the information, comments, and feelings about the future together. The Report being submitted to the congregation consists of an Introduction explaining the process, the History and Current Status of the church, Options related to the future, Recommended Actions and the names of the persons who attended the Appreciation Inquiry Session and participated in the five Church/Home Groups. The information to be shared on Sunday, November 19, 2017 is vital to deciding a future direction for Lakewood Christian Church and calls for action to achieve this objective. There will be no final decision made in the meeting on November 19. Some observations as we approach this significant congregational time together. There is a great love of and commitment to Lakewood Christian Church among its current members and friends. There is a deep, heartfelt concern about the future of the church. There is the realization among many that things cannot continue as they are but an understandable reluctance and hesitation to articulate or discuss what may need to be done to insure a meaningful, ongoing ministry. There is a normal wish that things would stay as they are along with a predictable fear of the unknown to come. So how do we go forward? Remembering that we are God s people, Lakewood is God s church and we are never out of His Holy presence. Loving and caring for each other above all else. Gathering information, raising the vital questions, sorting it out and making the best decision we can with God s guidance. See you in church! Richard
