2 CWF/DW Corner Executive Board : We met Tuesday and it will be our last meeting until September. Blessing Box Collection: We will collect our Blessing Boxes this Sunday, May 13, Mother s Day. There will be a special time during worship to bring these blessings forward. It would be helpful to convert coins to cash or check. Prayer Group: Tuesday, May 15, 10 a.m. at the church. AFTER PRAYER GROUP, we will go to the Fellowship Hall to decorate for the Spring Fling party that night. CWF Spring Fling: Tuesday, May 15, 6 p.m. This will be our end-of year celebration! If you haven t made your reservation, contact Valetha Ermoian or Wanda Morgan right away! We always have a very good time. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>LOAF<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< The LOAF group will not meet again until September. We had a good group at the May get-together. We discussed the possibility in the future of taking an excursion somewhere and everyone seemed to be interested in this. The Pardaen Family Warm Hugs (the no-sew blanket group) meets on the 2nd Monday of the month. No sewing involved! No need to buy fabric! Not sure if you can assemble a blanket? Grab your scissors and see how simple it is. Hope to see you on Monday, May 14th in the Fellowship Hall from 1:30-4:00. Tom and Susan are faithful, active members of our Lakewood family. They have experienced some difficult times lately. Peii Pardaen, Danny s wife, Tom and Susan s sister-in-law, died the end of March following a battle with cancer. We have had her on our Prayer List. Her remains were shipped to Finland where she was buried with her mother and father according to her wishes. After several months of tests, Tom has been diagnosed with a form of Parkinson s disease. He needs our special prayers as he works to accept this change in his life and move forward. The family camp on their ranch outside of Ozona was hit by one of the recent tornados. The following is part of an Susan sent me: You can please pray for the Pardaen Ranch. We had a tornado go through camp. We lost a 30 ft. trailer, 18 ft. trailer and our camp kitchen. Also, Toms brothers small cabin. Lots to clean up. We are going down this Thursday (May 10) and weekend to start the cleaning process. There are other family members going down to help. Let s rally around Tom, Susan and their family as they, with God s help, work through these trying situations. Scholarships Awarded Spring semester scholarships of $200 each have been given to Kevin and Katelyn Barker from our Scholarship Fund. Both are studying at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. They are doing well in the academics and very much involved in other University and community activities. Pat McFerrin and Dorothy Kendrick are our Scholarship Committee. Special Offerings Thanks to the generosity of our congregation our Souper Bowl and Week of Compassion offerings were over their goals of $200. The Souper Bowl offering of $405 was given to Caritas for food assistance in Waco. The Week of Compassion offering of $305 will be used for disaster relief through the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Thank you for your special giving.

I am graduating from Brite Divinity School with my Masters of Divinity. Graduation is at University Christian Church May 12, at 2:00 PM. I will be the Associate Minister at Azle Christian Church starting June 4 th. I'd like to thank Lakewood for their continuous support through school and life in general. Wedding Bells Our congratulations to Kenneth Mathis and Cristina Garcia who were married on Saturday morning, May 5, 2018 in a beautiful, garden ceremony. Rev. Roland officiated for the marriage. Following the ceremony, they traveled to Mexico to join with Cristina s family in a weekend of joy and rejoicing.

4 Minister s Insights and Inspiration On Thursday evening, April 26, leaders of our congregation met to hear the preliminary results of the studies that have been ongoing to help us determine how to move forward about a decision for the future of Lakewood. This Leadership Group was comprised of members of our Steering Board, Elders not on the Steering Board and representation from our CWF/DW Group. Persons present from these groups were Thad Barker, Phil Roach, Marilyn Jackson, Sue Lowry, Rick Cross, Roger Bailey, Dana Renschler, Brenda Kirkpatrick, Gary Fraser, Jon Carothers, Terry Ermoian, Hazel Martin, Jim Young, Lana Gilbert and Valetha Ermoian. Invited but not able to attend were Russell Scott, Pat McFerrin and Linda Jensen. I was also present along with Craig Walls. Craig is an Advisor with Hope Partnership of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He was present for our General Consultation. It was the unanimous feeling of this group that we needed to have a gathering for all members of our congregation to share these preliminary results. That gathering is scheduled for Sunday, May 20 following our worship service and a pot luck lunch. The presentation for the May 20 gathering will include an overview of Lakewood s past ministry, our current situation, and factual data that has been gathered relative to renting part of our church s facilities with the income to finance the ministry of the church, selling part of Lakewood s grounds for some type of development to provide additional income, merging with another church, and relocation. There will also be information about a process leading to a final decision. There will be time to ask questions and get clarifications about the matters presented. Getting to this point has taken longer than we had anticipated. Our initial time projections were overly ambitious. We are aware that is a lot of discussion going on about the various options. Some of the things we are hearing are accurate and relevant. Some are not. The meeting on May 20 is being designed to share, to the best of our ability, our current situation, information that has been gathered about each of the options, and a positive, realistic way to move forward to a decision. The best thing that could happen on May 20 for Lakewood s future would be for every member of Lakewood able to do so to be present. We hope you will be among the group. Bill Tinsley who writes on life experiences from the faith perspective in the Waco Tribune Herald began a series of articles on the Ten Commandments on Saturday, April 14. The first article was one that listed a number of public places across the country where the Ten Commandments have been removed because people objected to them being displayed. It is a very definitive article about the attacks being made on the Christian faith today. The title of this article was Ten Commandments Slowly Chiseled from Culture. Since then he has written on the following Saturdays articles on the First, Second and Third Commandments. All of these are excellent. They can be found on the paper s website. Thank you for the privilege of serving with you in God s ministry. These are not the easiest of times, but they are good times. God is good and always lets us know about it! Richard
