1 The April 12, 2018 The Week of the Young Child Our Lakewood Child Development Center will observe The Week of the Young Child from Monday, April 16 through Friday, April 20. The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration hosted by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) celebrating early learning, young children, their teachers, and families. OPEN DOOR LAKEWOOD CHRISTIAN CHURCH (Disciples of Christ) An Open Door to a Vital Faith Our entire Lakewood family is invited to share in the CDC Family Night on Friday, April 20 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. There will be a Taco Bar and activities for parents and children to do together. Jennifer Scott and Mary Timmons, our Godly Play persons, will take part in some of these activities. Lakewood will have a Booth telling CDC families about our church. Volunteers are needed to help set up Booths in Fellowship Hall on Thursday and Friday, April 19 and 20 and also to help with the serving and cleanup from the Taco Bar on Friday night. Items like hats, boas, cheap costume jewelry, dress up clothes, funny sunglasses and other such props are needed for the Photo Booth. There will be an insert in the bulletin Sunday where you can sign up to eat at the Taco Bar and volunteer to help. There is no cost for the Taco Bar. Baylor Senior Singers Celebrate Singing" with the Baylor Singing Seniors on Sunday, May 6 at 4:00 pm at the First Baptist Church in Woodway, 101 Ritchie Road. The concert will feature, Country, Gospel, Choral Standards, Broadway, Patriotic, and much more. The concert is free to the public. The Baylor Singing Seniors choir was organized in 1983 for the advancement of choral music by senior adults, with an emphasis on music by the masters. The primary aim was to provide the opportunity for senior adults to have a venue to enjoy singing and performing wonderful music throughout their active lifetimes. Presently the organization is composed of over 100 senior adults ages 57 to 93 who live in Waco and the surrounding area. Jerry Dobiyanski, a close friend of Jim and Cathy Banks, died on April 3, Mass of Christian Burial was on Saturday, April 7 at St. Mary s Catholic Church in College Station. Midway coach Patrick Posey died on Wednesday, April 4, Funeral services were on Saturday, April 7 at the First Baptist Church in Woodway. Coach Posey was highly respected and loved by the Midway ISD family and friends. Keaton Kramer, the twenty-six-year-old son of Jeff and Patti Kramer, was killed in an automobile accident on Saturday, April 7. Funeral arrangements are pending. Miranda Brown was a High classmate of Jeff and Patti. Let s remember all of these persons and their families and friends in our times of prayer.

4 Minister s Insights and Inspiration On the front page of this newsletter there is information about the CDC Family Night on Friday, April 20 as part of the observance of The Week of the Young Child. There will be an insert in the bulletin on Sunday, April 15 to indicate your support for this event. Pam Huffstatler, our CDC Director, has made a special effort to include our entire Lakewood family in this event. Let s respond to her invitation. I take very seriously calling on our people and friends of our members who have lost a loved one, are in the hospital, a Care facility or need a visit in their home. I cannot do this unless I know there is a need. Hospitals and Care facilities no longer notify churches of people who are there. If you learn of one of our members or have someone you would like for me to visit, please call me, text me or send me an . Don t assume someone else has done this. I would rather receive multiple calls than none at all. Thanks for your help. Al Thurston has for several years faithfully maintained and updated our church website. He has communicated to us that he is no longer able to do this. We owe Al a deep debt of gratitude for his attention to our site. During the last update, Al worked with Brandi so that she is now able to assume this responsibility. We hope to do a complete remaking of our site in the near future. Ever wonder why the paraments and the banners change colors during the year? The Christian year has two cycles: the Christmas Cycle (Advent-Christmas-Epiphany) and the Easter Cycle (Lent-Easter-Pentecost). Within each cycle is a season of preparation symbolized by the color purple and a festival season symbolized by the color white. After each cycle there is a time of growth symbolized by the color green. This results in a sequence of seasons using purple, white, and green in that order twice each year. Purple represents both royalty and penitence. White is used at Christmas and Easter to symbolize joy and festivities. Green represents growth. Red symbolizes the color of fire to represent the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost and times when the work of the Holy Spirit is emphasized. During Holy Week it represents the blood of Christ. Red is also used for ordinations, church anniversaries and civil observances such as Memorial Day and Thanksgiving. Our thanks to Sue Lowry and her worship group for changing our paraments and banners as we celebrate the seasons. Thank you for your generous and consistent giving for the first three months of our church year. Because of your commitment, we have been able to meet all of our financial obligations. In the narthex you will find a Year to Date Report of our Income and Expenditures. Please look this over. If you have questions, please get in touch with Thad, Phil, Russell or myself and we will provide the information you need. The information gathering process relative to our three options for the future of Lakewood continues. We hope to have within the next few weeks the facts needed to update everyone. In the meantime, if you have heard that a decision has been made to relocate and land has been purchased, you have been given False News! No final decisions have been made and no land has been bought! Before you believe or repeat anything you hear about what is happening, it might be a good idea to verify your information with Thad, Phil, Russell or myself before you pass it on!
