3 From Your Pastor: Jim Ewing My father s Day message this year was taken from 1 Chron 12:32 Of the sons of Issachar, men who understood the times, with knowledge of what Israel should do, their chiefs were two hundred; and all their kinsmen were at their command. I titled the message: Someone Worth Following. In that message I outlined three characteristics of someone worth following: First, they don t need to be great in the world s eyes. Too many given the title of great today are lacking in the character necessary to be worthy of emulating. Second, someone worth following must understand the culture of the day. Why? Because the culture shapes us in ways we often don t see... and it s busy 24/7. And third, someone worth following must know God s Word and be skilled enough to act accordingly. These are essential elements of godly and effective leaders. In this letter I want to focus on the second of these characteristics: Understanding the culture of the day. One of the pervasive influences in our culture today is the presence of the smart phone. For many of us, it s become as essential as a watch, a wallet, or a purse. If we forget to take it with us we feel disconnected and inaccessible. In his book, 12 Ways Your Phone is Changing You (Crossway Publishers), author Tony Reinke notes: Never more connected, we see to be growing more distant. Never more efficient, we have never been more distracted. As I look at the priority I place on having my smart phone with me, I think he s onto something very important... something worthy of our careful consideration. Reinke begins his book with what he calls A Little Theology of Technology. He states: From trumpets and temples to gold-edged Bible, God intended technology to play an essential role for us to know and worship Him. (33) Referring to the story of the tower of Babel in Gen 11, he notes: Babel marked man s collective rejection of the idea that technology is a gift from God. Before they built a tower into the sky, the people of Babel drew a line in the sand that said to the Creator, Human autonomy will take credit for technological innovations from here on thankyouverymuch.... Technology in not inherently evil, but it tends to become the platform of choice to express the fantasy of human autonomy. (33-34) From this foundation he presents the 12 Ways our smart phone is impacting our lives. 1. We are Addicted to Distraction 2. We Ignore our Flesh and Blood 3. We Crave Immediate Approval 4. We Lose Our Literacy 5. We Feed on the Produced 6. We Become Like What we Like 7. We Get Lonely 8. We Get Comfortable in Secret Vices 9. We Lose Meaning 10. We Fear Missing Out 11. We Become Harsh to One Another 12. We Lose Our Place in Time When I read through these chapters, not all of them applied directly to me... but I didn t grow up with smart phones and I m not a power user of this technology. But I did resonate with some of what Reinke said and I have seen first-hand that these issues are real and they are affecting all of us. It would be easy for older adults to dismiss these issues because they don t impact them personally. But the importance of understanding the culture isn t just a personal thing. If we re to be someone worth following, we must understand what s happening around us so that we can bring God s Word to bear on the issues. Tossing out a verse of Scripture when we don t understand what s going on often does more damage than good. As we read in Ezek 22: "I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one. Thus I have poured out My indignation on them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; their way I have brought upon their heads," declares the Lord God. We must stand in the gap for our people. Like the men of Issachar, we must be people who understand the times and know what to do. I encourage you to get hold of this book and get a better understanding of this important issue. It really does matter! See you Sunday! Together in Him, Bro Jim Youth Ministry: Lance & Trena Gregory June has been somewhat of a slow month. After Crossings Camp we have only been able to get together one time due to VBS and our family vacation. We have, however, started a devotional book to keep us in the word daily. Thank you for your continued support! In Christ, Lance & Trena Gregory Children s Ministry: Janet Dietsch Wow! Even though we were shipwrecked at VBS, Jesus was there to rescue us and give us a fabulous Vacation Bible School. The children collected 204 items for the food pantry and $ for Baptist Global response. As always our children are awesome in giving. Thank you Bob Futrell for cooking burgers and hot dogs on Friday night. A BIG THANK YOU TO RITA TABOR, our VBS Director and Wayne Tabor for cooking all week. Wayne did a fabulous job. We appreciated him taking on the task of feeding everyone. You are The MAN. Rita did a terrific job in getting everything together for our week. Also a big thank you to all of the volunteers. You were wonderful as always. We couldn t do it without you

4 from donations, to decorating, to being here for the week. It was a terrific week! Danny has started with our children s choir. It is happening during our time for the next 5 weeks. The children are excited and had fun with him learning some songs to praise the Lord! It was a blessing to watch the fun going on between Danny and the children. Don t forget our Summer Fun-days! July 1 st, we will be putting all our stuff together for the parade. Come out and help us right after morning service to stuff the bags and have pizza afterwards. This is always a fun time. Also, anyone who wants to help pass out our bags at the parade, come help on July 4 th. We ll have more details later for that day. July 8 th We will enjoy pizza and a movie. We ll have one movie for the children and one for the adults. It will be great. July 22 nd Family trip to Venture River. Sign up and pay me or the office before the 22 nd. July 29 th Come out and play a game of miniature golf. This will be lots of fun time spent with your church family. July looks to be as busy as June was. Come enjoy the time, fun, and laughter with us. We had a great turn out to help at the Sheriff s ranch. Thank you to everyone who came. It was a blessing to be with everyone and serve the children. Children in Christ, Janet Dietsch Music Ministry: Danny Granstaff (This is the first of three installments taken from an article by: Sam Storms, lead Pastor at Bridgeway Church in Oklahoma City, OK.) AND HIS SERVANTS WILL WORSHIP HIM! REFLECTIONS ON OUR ETERNAL ENJOYMENT OF GOD. What can we know about our worship of God in the new earth? Worship in the new heaven and new earth will be endlessly fresh. It will never grow old or boring, because God is infinitely appealing and infinitely fascinating. Think with me briefly about the infinity of God. When we say that God is infinite, we mean that there is no end to what is true of him. He suffers from no boundaries. He has no limitations. He is endlessly and eternally glorious. He never runs out of characteristics, features, or fascinating facts about his personality and power. When you and I worship on a Sunday, many of us struggle to endure for 30 minutes. We sing a few songs and focus on a handful of truths about God, and then we re done. We re ready to move on to something else. Not in the new earth! Every moment of every day, we will discover new and exciting things about God. Every moment of our life throughout eternity, some fresh and previously unknown thing about God will captivate us and overwhelm us. Let me give you just one example of what I mean. Consider what Paul says in Ephesians 2:7. God made us alive together with Christ and raised us up with him so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. Making us alive in Christ and setting us free from the guilt and bondage of spiritual death was only the penultimate purpose of God. The ultimate motivation in God s heart for saving lost souls was so that we might become, throughout all eternity, trophies on display for all to see the magnificence and the surpassing riches of God s grace in kindness in Christ! Paul s language is carefully chosen. He employs the plural ages to accentuate the stunning reality that redeemed sinners will bear ceaseless witness to the mercy of God, both now and hereafter. Like waves incessantly crashing on the shore, one upon another, so the ages of eternity future will, in endless succession, echo the celebration of sinners saved by grace, all to the glory of God. There will not be in heaven a one-time momentary display of God s goodness, but an everlasting, ever-increasing infusion and impartation of divine kindness that intensifies with every passing moment. Worshipping always, Danny Facility Manager: Ray Tucker Here s what s going on in and around the buildings at FBC. The old conference room upstairs in the gym is getting a facelift in preparation for becoming the YOUTH ROOM. The walls are finished and should be painted within the next few weeks. Wainscoting, wood trim and paint come next with flooring afterwards. Then the project will be turned over to the youth for furnishings. Other major concerns are the stained glass window in the prayer room and the poor condition of our steeple. These projects have been in the works for many months. Scheduling equipment and craftsmen has proven to be very difficult but with some good weather this summer, things should start to happen. We have removed the old steeple and a new one will be in place in approximately 4-6 weeks. Ray Tucker
