3 From Your Pastor: Jim Ewing Hebrews 10:23-25 says: Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. The book of Hebrews is focused on explaining why Jesus and the New Covenant are better than Moses and the Old Covenant. The primary audience was Jews who had been brought up under the Old Testament Laws and had questions about how to think about Jesus message. We don t have the same issues that the Jews did about Jesus and the Old Testament Law, but the call of Hebrews 10:23-25 to support and encourage one another is just as important today as it was nearly 2000 years ago. Living in a fallen world means that we will struggle with our own desires (1 John 2:16) and we ll tend to lean on our own understanding in making life choices (Proverbs 3:5-6). God created the church (Matthew 16:18-19) to help us do life well and faithfully (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). In one of his recent blogs, Dr. Thom Rainer, the President of Lifeway Christian Resources noted that church members are attending church less frequently than they did in previous years. Among the reasons he noted was: 1. They are more mobile, 2. They are more affluent, and 3. They are likely not active in a small group. While the first two certainly have an impact... it s the third one that concerns me the most. For us here at FBC, the primary small group experience is Sunday morning Bible Study, or Sunday School. It s about more than just Bible study. It s also where individuals we see in worship become personal acquaintances. Certainly, education is a primary task, and it s essential to our spiritual well-being. But like the writer of Hebrews explains, we need to be present with other believers who will help us stay focused. It s through other believers that God does most of His work in our lives... and the means by which God provides the encouragement to stand faithful in our walk with God. One of the best descriptions of a functioning church is found in Acts 2: They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved. Notice that the majority of the activity was interaction among the people; not God doing personal miracles in the lives of individuals. They spent time together, they understood each other s needs and helped meet them. And as a result, God did what they couldn t do... He brought new people to faith using their love for each other. Proverbs 18:1 warns us: He who separates himself seeks his own desire, he quarrels against all sound wisdom. In other words, if we try to walk with God on our own, we ll inevitably go astray. In our culture today, everything from smart movies to television to social media calls us away from God and urges us to look to the world for affirmation and pleasure. But, I refer us back to a verse I mention often, Proverbs 14:12 - There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. God s plan for our security and safety is the body of believers we call the church! What that means is that the extent of our connection with fellow Christians is a pretty good barometer of the depth of our walk with God. So let me encourage you... if you re not already in a Sunday morning Bible Study Class... come join us! This is where God is busy at FBC. See you Sunday! Together in Him Bro Jim Youth Ministry: Lance & Trena Gregory Our youth are headed out to camp on Thursday, May 31 and will return on Tuesday Jun 5th. Please pray for them. It s not unusual for God to do some pretty amazing things in the hearts of our youth. As we think about what God is up to in our youth ministry, we hope you ll appreciate this story titled: Uncovering the Art. Michelangelo is considered one of the greatest Renaissance painters and sculptors. In talking about his sculpting, he said that he never created his great works; he discovered them. He said he uncovered them. Using his famous statue of David as an example, he said God placed the art in the stone, and it was Michelangelo s job to bring out what God had created. Trying to see what was waiting to be uncovered, he was known to stand in front of an unfinished piece and yell in frustration, Come out! As children of God, we're called to live lives of purity and holiness. Many of us, though, try to be good under our own power. God is more than powerful enough and more than willing to make us into who we were originally created to be. Our job, then, is to allow God to chip away all of the parts of us that don't belong. When we allow these extras to be trimmed off by the Master's hand, we'll find beautiful works of art glorious creations made in the image and likeness of God. [I am] confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 1:6). In Christ, Lance & Trena Gregory

4 Children s Ministry: Janet Dietsch In a blink of an eye, the AWANA year is over. It ended with the finale of the Grand Prix. What fun we have had this year! Our understanding and knowledge of God grew appreciation for our fabulous AWANA leaders. Get recharged for next year! We also had awards night on May 6. Children in Christ, Janet Dietsch Music Ministry: Danny Granstaff This is the last of three installments from an article by: Don Schwager, author of the Daily Scripture Readings and Meditations. No greater service than to praise and worship God The scriptures use many words to describe what is involved in worship. When we worship God we praise, adore, extol, magnify, glorify, thank and bless God for all that he has done for us. When we worship God we acknowledge him for who he truly is the Almighty One, the Everlasting Lord, the Eternal Father, King and Ruler of all that he has made! That is why true worship is marked by reverence and awe of God. Scripture tells us that the prayers of the saints are like incense before God (Psalm 141:2; Revelations 8:3-4). God is very pleased when we offer him praise and worship. When we pray and worship in the Spirit we cannot remain silent for too long because the Spirit of God fills us with jubilation and tongues of praise. Augustine of Hippo once wrote that "to sing to God is to pray twice!" We pray not only with our mind and heart, but with our voices as well, even singing and shouting to the Lord, and expressing with our whole body our praise and worship of God with the lifting of our hands, the bowing of our heads in adoration, with clapping, with dancing, and with the playing of musical instruments that accompany our vocal praise and worship. Our privilege is to praise and worship God each and every day in the power of his Holy Spirit. There is no greater service we can give him now than to praise him with all of our heart, mind, will, and strength. And our joy and sure hope is the promise of Jesus that we will see God face to face and worship him for all eternity. Let us make the prayer of David our prayer as well: "One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple." (Psalm 27:4) How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God. (prayer from Psalm 84:1-2) Worshipping always, Danny Facility Manager: Ray Tucker Here s what s going on in and around the buildings at FBC. The old conference room upstairs in the gym is getting a facelift in preparation for becoming the YOUTH ROOM. Walls and electrical have been moved and new drywall hung. Finished walls including primer and paint should be done by the end of the month. Finish wall treatment, wainscoting, wood trim and paint come next with flooring afterwards. Then the project will be turned over to the youth for furnishings. Other major concerns are the stained glass window in the prayer room and the poor condition of our steeple. These projects have been in the works for many months. Scheduling equipment and craftsmen has proven to be very difficult but with some good weather this spring, things should start to happen. Thanks to those who keep our lawn cut and bushes trimmed especially to Eddie and Gail Agent for their diligent work. Ray Tucker
