1 The Messenger ~ A Communication Ministry of Salem United Church of Christ ~ January, 2019 Volume 65, Issue 1 We are God s children called to seek, share, teach, and continue to experience the Word of God. Coming and going in Christ Read Matthew 11:28-30, 28:19 Consider the manger scenes that are displayed, even as I write this. Notice the proximity of the people around the baby Jesus. Regardless of accuracy, as Christians we know that Jesus is worthy of worship, and that He draws people to Himself. Consider also as He draws people to Himself, He is also drawing people closer together in proximity to one another. This is needful to us always, perhaps even more within our congregation at this place and time. We can all step closer to Christ and help some of the lacking places within our church family. Circumstances be what they may be; we are family - God made it so! Suppose a family living a peaceful existence finds one of the parents unexpectedly called to duty in the army reserves. Now one of the parents is stationed thousands of miles away. Are they missing something? Obviously, but do they cease to be a family, or do they all stand a little closer and pick up a bit of what is missing for that time? If they are a real family, they do the latter. So the first part of this focuses on drawing nearer. The second part has to do with being sent. The Lord beacons us to come to Him to be filled, but then He sends us out. There will be no need to fill us with goodness if it were not to be poured out with love in our world. Day by day we come and go in the Lord, somehow overflowing and being poured out at the same time. Each time we come back together with others, our witness is ever stronger because of what we have done in faith, to the glory of God. Wherever you are, know you are family and we need you! There is no place of blessing that calls us to stand back. All of our coming and goings brings us closer to Jesus and one another. A family gathers in blessed communion with each other. After they are fed, they go out and are goodness to the world. They come home with stories that unite and build. The ways of our Lord are beautiful! We go forward into a new year, one family in Christ. God Bless You, Pastor John S A L E Salem will be volunteering at BCMW on Saturday, January 19th. BCMW is a food pantry in Clinton County, but tackles other issues with homelessness as well. Each year, they put on a canned goods drive and a coat drive to provide these items to those that are residents in their facilities. They are asking for volunteers to help organize the items collected with these drives. We will be helping in two shifts, 9-10:30 or 10: Children 6 and up are welcome to join as well! Please sign up outside the church office and see a member of the mission committee if you have questions. Hope you can join us! M I S S I O N Help Needed.. Evangelism/Worship Committee is inviting EVERYONE to help unhang the greens following Worship on Sunday, January 6.

2 Humans Make Mistakes Suggested song: Sing Me Your Song by Judah and the Lion We hear this question often, but I am going to ask it anyway. What does it mean to be human? Are we perfect? Do we know everything there is to know about the universe? Can we do everything on our own with no help? The answer to all of those questions is no. But sometimes we lose sight of that. Sometimes we think we know all and that nobody is better than us or that we don t need others. We have thoughts, emotions, wants, dreams, needs, desires. And when we think like this or act out those thoughts and emotions or work toward our dreams, we often make mistakes. No matter what age you are, to make mistakes is to be human. And as a result, we have to learn to forgive. Good friends forgive. Good family members forgive. And not because the mistake that has been made it right, but because we are good people, because we love. In the song, Sing Me Your Song, by Judah and the Lion, he wants to get to know a girl, but she holds a grudge. He can t let go of all of his mistakes and her past experiences. But, he doesn t care about that. He just wants to get to know her. If we don t include forgiveness in our lives, then what are we missing out on? Friends that want to love you but can t because you won t let them? Family that wants to support you but can t because you don t trust them? Memories that could last a lifetime? Children make many mistakes, and often don t learn from them right away. But as adults in their lives, we should meet them with forgiveness and guidance. Hopefully, then, we are not only teaching them how to avoid making mistakes, but also how to love and forgive others for their mistakes. Without forgiveness, you cannot love and be loved. Because we are human, we make mistakes, again and again. And without forgiveness, we can never be happy with those we have in our life, or ourselves. --- Becca Exhale January Schedule Sunday, Jan. 6 - Exhale 4-5:30 Sunday, Jan Exhale 4-5:30 Sunday, Jan Exhale 4-5:30 Saturday, Jan Sausage Supper Coat Check/Selling Soda This is mandatory for those planning on going on either mission trip Sunday, Jan 27 - Informational Parent Meeting for Mission Trip 2019 & Junior High Mission Trip following worship Sunday, Jan Exhale 4-5:30 Notice of the 159 th Annual Meeting In accordance with the Salem Constitution, the Church Council voted and approved that the 159 th Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday, February 3, 2019, following the 10:00 a.m. worship service Annual Reports If you have not submitted your committee s annual report, please do so as soon as possible.
