1 The Messenger ~ A Communication Ministry of Salem United Church of Christ ~ June 2018 Volume 64, Issue 6 We are God s children called to seek, share, teach, and continue to experience the Word of God. On the farm this Spring a variety of birds have come to live and fill the trees. Weeks ago they started to build their nests and have now started their families. I have sparrows and blackbirds, of course. There are also cardinals, robins, swallows, wrens, blue jays, and geese to name a few. I love seeing the cardinals, my favorite bird. The swallows are great for keeping the mosquito population down. I love to watch and listen to my feathered friends as they work and play, but it's one family of robins that intrigues me. They decided weeks ago to build their nest on the overhang above the back porch door (which is the main entrance into the house). It never crossed my mind to take down the nest and now they have little ones. It's interesting how momma and poppa respond to my presence when I go in and out of the house or sit outside. They still look upon me as a threat, yet they seem to be warming up to me a bit. One of the pair will get as close as twenty feet to me on the ground. It might be my imagination, but it seems as I have talked to her over the weeks she has garnered some trust in me. Regardless, I look forward to the growth of the babies and their eventual flight from the nest. Thinking of birds, I'm reminded of those familiar verses from the Gospel of Matthew 6:25-27: That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? I think the point of Jesus' words are not about worry; it's about trust. Birds instinctively trust God and the Universe for their needs. I think Jesus' point is that we need to grow so intimate with God that we regularly and naturally trust God. That doesn't mean we don't go about our business and do our work. The birds certainly do. The birds trust the process that God has set into place. I think we would do well to do the same. One more verse: Trust in the Lord with all your heart. and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight (Proverbs 3:5-6). --- Pastor Ivan Congregational Meeting Calling All Men Sunday, June 3, 2018 There will be a Congregational Meeting immediately following worship on Sunday, June 3 to discuss and vote on an air conditioner for the Parish Hall. There will be a Men s Choir group practice on Wednesday, May 30 and Wednesday, June 6 at 7:00 p.m. The Men s Choir group will be singing in church on June 10.

2 Being made complete suggested readings: Psalm chapter 14 and 15; John chapter 17 If you have ever had the taxing job of assembling something that comes in a large box and contains hundreds of parts with instructions for assembly included, it seems quite likely that the person who wrote the instructions never really ever assembled one of these contraptions, may have not ever seen one, and is not fluent in our language. After finding a part that doesn't seem to match anything in the instructions and further, not finding a part you are looking for, we realize that something needful is missing. Whatever we have does not make sense to us. Honestly, our natural life, apart from relationship with our Lord, is like that. Even when things seem to fit together, nothing really makes sense the moment we think a bit deeper. It seems we have one of two ways to live. One is in a state of delusion where we live superficially and try not to consider anything in depth, thereby pretending we are getting on just fine. The other way is to accept the reality of our brokenness. Our world, our fellow being, and ourselves all struggle. We struggle because we are not complete! Jesus is about this business of completing. He has completed and continues to bring us into complete unity with God and each other as we are willing. As greatly as we are loved, as special as we are to God and even to each other, we are mess! We are not complete, and we of ourselves can do nothing to complete ourselves. St. Augustine says, "my soul will not rest until it rests in Thee!" Thomas Merton writes, There is only one unhappiness, that is to not love God." Why such a seeking? The glory of God is manifest in making of this oneness! Jesus calls us to Himself; He beckons us to live through Him each day. We are invited to be made more like Jesus each day. Only one complete man ever walked this earth; the God man Jesus Christ. Jesus wants to daily complete you and me. May we let Him have His way! 3 The teen years are a pivotal point in our children s development. This is the time where they learn who they are, what they want to do with their life, what friendship is, and many more life lessons. This is a time for them to try new things and find out what they are interested in. They can grow into strong, educated, well-rounded young adults if teens live life to its fullest capacity. However, these teen years can also have a negative impact. Many times, kids will choose to try new things or make decisions that we may not agree with. Without proper supervision, they may get into questionable situations or mixed up with the wrong crowd. As parents or adult role models in our kids lives, our first instinct is to protect them from all the wrong and bad choices in the world. We want them to be smart and do the right thing. We want them to be the best versions of themselves all day, every day. But, when they become adults and start living their own lives, they won t always have us adults there to tell them what to do. In the movie Footloose, Reverend Shaw fights with the members of his congregation about the wellbeing of their children. After several teens from their town Trust Our Teens died in a car crash because of reckless behavior, the town kept their teens under very close watch. They were so controlling of their teen s activities that they were not allowed to participate in the awful activity of dancing! When the kids urged Rev. Shaw to change his mind about dancing, he asked his congregation a very challenging question: How can we expect to trust our kids as adults when we haven t given them time to prove themselves to be trustworthy? If we don t allow our kids to prove to us that they know the difference between right and wrong, how will we ever be comfortable letting them leave the nest as adults? Sure, we don t want them to do anything dangerous. But we still want them to choose on their own to finish their homework before hanging out with their friends. Or decide the right time to voice their opinion and when to keep it to themselves. Or to go to bed at a decent hour so they are not tired the next day. As a teacher, I find myself doing this as well. I feel like I need to have complete control over my classroom at all times. But many times, like my students, our children learn the most about life by experiencing it. It is one thing for us to warn them about the negative consequences. It is another for them to see what those negative consequences are on their own. Instead of telling them what they can and can t do, we should let them learn for themselves the good, the bad, and the ugly of life. This is hard, I know. But as some of us have kids that are graduating and going to college, we want to know that our children can handle this world on their own and don t need us to tell them what is the right thing to do every step of the way. So, as some are leaving the nest, as some are ready to embrace summer, and as some are growing faster than we can keep up with, remember that you have taught them well, God is always protecting them, and we don t know they are trustworthy until they have the opportunity to prove it to us Becca Exhale June Schedule June 3 and 10 - NO EXHALE June 17 - Exhale 4-5:30 The high school mission trip group would like to keep the congregation "in the loop" during their trip to Texas on July If you would like to receive a postcard from Exhale while they are in Texas, with information about what mission work they are doing, please provide your mailing address to Becca by , text, or leave a note in her mailbox. 10 ************************************************************************************************** From The Pastoral Search Committee. The Search Committee would like to first thank all of you who came out for the Town Hall Meeting with Rev. Shana Johnson from Illinois South Conference. Her presentation was very enlightening, and we all learned much about the process in our search for our next Senior Pastor. The first step was appointing a Search Committee. For anyone not aware of those appointed, they are Joye Brase, Ann Frank, Gena Hodapp, Betty Imboden, Tori Lynn, Ron Mindrup, Carol Reckman, Ron Schmidt and Steve Stille. The second step is putting together a description of our congregation. In our effort to develop our Church Profile for Salem, we will be sending out a survey to our members to gather an understanding of who we are and define our needs. Your help is needed to make this profile accurate and meaningful, and a mailing is being sent out to our members. We thank you for your completion of the surveys. Only with an accurate profile can we hope to find a pastor who shares our vision for the future of Salem and will be able to provide the leadership to help us achieve our goals as a Christian community. After our Church Profile has been submitted, our third step will be to begin considering all potential candidates, and then interviewing candidates. As Rev. Johnson stated, it is important for all our members to understand this entire process can take up to months. Our Committee is committed to this process, and we truly ask that each of you keep our church and this committee in your prayers for the coming months. We strongly believe God is an active force in this search process. We seek to choose the candidate we believe God desires for our congregation. His Grace and Peace, The Search Committee ************************************************************************************************** We are looking for volunteers to help provide special music for us this summer. On June 10 we will be having our Men's choir sing for us and on July 15 the Ladies choir will be singing.
