1 The Messenger ~ A Communication Ministry of Salem United Church of Christ ~ July 2018 Volume 64, Issue 7 We are God s children called to seek, share, teach, and continue to experience the Word of God. Ah, summer! "And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer." F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby God's creation, our little spot of it, is a miracle. And a little spot, it is. In John 1:3 it says, "Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made." The miracle that is the Universe is an endless array of galaxies, stars, black holes, planets, comets, meteors, dark matter, and dark energy. At one point in history, people thought the Sun rotated around the Earth. But now we not only know the Earth rotates around Sun, but the Sun is rotating within the Milky Way, AND the Milky Way is moving within the Universe. It's enough to boggle the mind. Here in our little corner of the Universe, summer came early this year. The heat and humidity, has caused me to stay indoors, at least the middle of the day. I venture out in the evening, sometimes spending as much as three hours on a lawn chair in the yard, watching the clouds and storms go by and see Venus and Mars appear in the darkening evening sky. My little spot on the Earth. My garden is only about 15x30 feet. My sweet corn, which I was worried about in its early development, has shot up and is almost as tall as me. The blackberries, that bloomed only a few weeks ago, are now showing small berries and will be thick with luscious, mature berries in a matter of weeks. Life continues on. Yes, we don't like the heat and humidity of summer. We fret about our gardens and crops, hoping for the right amount of rain and sunlight. Here in our little spot in the Universe. The writer of Job 12:7-10 reminds us: But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind." ---- Pastor Ivan ****************************************************************************************** Changes are coming! 2 With God All Things are Possible On the wall behind me hangs a back scratcher; it gets to the places I can't reach. Regardless if we are a mechanic, firefighter or numerous other occupations, there are those places that are difficult to access. Occasionally I have the need to type something on a form, using a typewriter that is primarily for the clerk s use. There are margins set electronically and I have no intention of disturbing them. When I can't reach a needed area of the form, I fold the paper over to get to it. Being human, we have margins also, normally in the form of biases and preconceived notions. Jesus blew these out of the realm of human understanding over and over again. From Martha's limited understanding in the raising of her brother quite physically from the dead; to disciples in Mark, Chapter 9, that can't see how someone casting out demons in Jesus name while not a follower of Jesus, could be doing good. In Luke 13:1-5, Jesus tells us that there is not some direct correlation between leading a sinful life and losing one s earthly life. The bible is replete with examples. Recently as I was trying to see my way through something, God laid this on my heart. "Pull out the margins!" God thinks and works in a realm that has no margins! God can do all things! May we trust God not only to do what we hope for, but even more than we can imagine! God Bless You Pastor John Food Pantries Need Your Help!!! Please join us for donuts, milk, juice and coffee following 9:00 a.m. worship services. Evangelism/Worship Committee is hosting Fellowship Hour for the month of June. 3 Miracle in Mission (Suggested Song - listen while/after you read: Stand Up by Sugarland) As many of you know, I participated in Salem s mission trip to Ecuador last month with five other amazing women. This was my second time going on this trip, and hope to continue participating in the future. And just like any trip we go on, the first question when we get back is how was the trip? I know people are genuinely interested in knowing about our trip and the work that we did, but I am not sure they want to hear about if for hours on end. Because I really could talk for days about how it impacted me. Everything about this trip - the experience, the mission work, the people, the culture, the scenery - changed my life. It brought me closer to God, strengthened my faith, helped me see the good in people, notice that not all people in need are looking for a handout, and truly showed me that love wins. The family that we were helping build a house for had been living out of a makeshift tent after their house was destroyed in the earthquake in April That s 26 months living in a tent! But despite this hardship, Andres, the father of the family, was the happiest, joyous person I have ever met. He always had a smile on his face and welcomed us every day to the work site with a huge hug. He was truly grateful for the opportunity that Habitat was offering him to make a better life for his family and worked right by our side every day. To me, Andres s loving personality and emotion was God s way of telling me we were doing the right thing. We were doing God s work. In the song Stand Up by Sugarland, it talks about standing up for the silent and broken hearted. The most powerful part of the song says, When the walls fall all around you, when your hope has turned to dust, let the sound of love surround you, beat like a heart in each of us. Although we were a small group from a small congregation in a small town, we were able to stand up and have a big impact on a family who had the biggest hearts. We showed them that love from anywhere, even from a small town they have never heard of, can help their broken hearts and troubled times. We were called to stand up and use our voices because God wanted us to. On Sunday, our last day in Quito before we returned home, we attended a church service, where the sermon talked about miracles. But the preacher said miracles aren t what we think they are. Miracles are not when God does our will. We talk about miracles when someone survives a surgery or a car accident, or when a baby is born, or when the team we are rooting for wins the game with an impossible shot. But the true miracle is when we can do God s will. That is truly what this trip was about. Andres and his family needed help recovering from a devastating disaster. So God sent us, a group of 6 women from a small town like Alhambra. We didn t know who these people were but we knew that it was God s plan that we go. But not only did we help Andres and his family, but they helped us grow in our faith and become stronger Christians. And that is the miracle. The miracle of mission that loves brings the world together and the miracle that God s will be done. *If you are interested in hearing more about our mission trip to Ecuador, don t hesitate to ask...because we would love to share the experience! ---- Becca July Exhale Schedule *Exhale will not be meeting on Sundays during July. Enjoy your summer! 6 From The Pastoral Search Committee. The Search Committee is in the process of gathering information for the Church Profile. We are receiving your questionnaires and will be scoring the results to be included in the Church Profile. We thank all of you for your help in sharing your information and vision for the future. During a season of transition for the church, thinking and talking through where we ve been, where we are going, and how we are going to get there, and what we believe in can be not only helpful but healing. In this time of transition, it is important to remain focused on the future. Our church needs a pastor whose vision truly aligns with that of our church. This, in part, is why we have asked for your input from the entire membership. The Survey asked for characteristics your family feels are important traits for our new pastor. Jesus was identified as Prophet, Priest, and King. Prophet, Can the pastor communicate the Word to us? ; Priest, Can the pastor minister to us? ; and King, Can the pastor run the organization of our church? The Priest is the one gifted with a pastoral heart. He has great bedside manner, a heart for people. The Prophet has great vision and voice. He is the gifted preacher and teacher. The King is gifted in the ability to rule. He makes the trains run on time. Demographics and spiritual background are great metrics for predicting what kind of candidate would be successful. Thank you again for sharing with us. You have taken a stake in the future and vision of the church. Please continue to pray for the Search Committee. Completing the Church Profile is a tedious task. His Blessings and Peace, The Search Committee Many FIRSTS During the FIRST Week of L.U.N.C.H. Bunch 2018: A few siblings thanked a delivery crew for their sack lunches. They smiled and went on to say it is the FIRST thing they will have to eat for that day since they don't get breakfast and will probably the only meal they get for the entire day. "My food stamps were discontinued and about that same time my rent went up $200. I'm disabled and my son and I are going through pretty tough times," a single mother explained to me over the phone. "I didn't know about the lunch program here in Highland. For my son to be outside right then and for you all to give him a lunch, that's all because of the Lord. This is God's work. Thank you so much!" He enjoyed his FIRST Lunch Bunch lunch that day. The one veggie lunch we send out is for a boy whose autism is worsened by animal proteins. On his FIRST day coming out to receive a lunch for the year the young man asked the delivery crew, "Do you have a vegetarian lunch for me today? I prayed for it." Many heart-rending stories throughout the FIRST week. Our FIRST week of 2017 we served 390 lunches; our FIRST week of 2018 we served 567 tummies and many, many more hearts! Thank you for your support of this outreach program. Please continue to spread the word about the program, drop any loose change in the container in the Narthex to help support this mission project and donate 100% juice boxes! Salem UCC needs your help! We are in need of greeters, liturgists, nursery attendants, and ushers for the September 2018 August 2019 Schedule. Please sign up on the table outside the church office if you can help with one, two, or more of these ministries.

7 ** Favorite Hymns** July 1 - Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah submitted by Laura Muench - O Jesus I have Promised submitted by Donna Yates. This was one of my Mom's (Louise Schuette) favorite hymns. She remembered that this was her confirmation class's (1936) chosen hymn. July 8 - Be Thou My Vision submitted by Theresa Piskackova - Jesus Calls Us O'er the Tumult submitted by Donna Yates. I can still hear and see my Grandpa Henry Schuette singing out on this song. July 15 - It is Well with My Soul submitted by Melanie Bonnell because it brings her peace. July 22 - Gentle Shepherd submitted by Donna Yates. I love the harmony and the message in this song. July 29 - I Would Be True submitted by Carol Reckman. It is one of her many favorite hymns. Onward Christian Soldiers was a favorite hymn submitted by Edith Ruehrup in June. President Roosevelt had this hymn printed in a Bible given to soldiers during WWII. Elmer Ruehrup had one given to him, and his family still has this Bible. Below shows the note from President Roosevelt and the hymn that is printed in the bible.
