2 Gord and Nancy Bell moved from Toronto to Lake of Bays 25 years ago after purchasing Beauview Cottages. They sold the resort in 2018 and now operate an internet marketing business. Nancy sings in the Huntsville Community Choir and Gord plays saxophone in the Huntsville Community Band and Kingfisher Cottage Band. They are looking forward to participating in our PROBUS activities. Speedy recovery cards were sent to Peter Robinson and Wendy Hill. In order to maintain the quality of our guest speakers and the diversity of the topics presented at our monthly meetings, we have decided to set up a committee to help with the process. The Vice President is the chair. If you or someone you know would like to join the committee, please contact: David Mason dmason@genau.ca or Sally McClelland mcclelland.sally@gmail.com All the best in PROBUS, David Mason 2
3 Heather Smith has 30 years experience working in both history museums and the art galleries. She has a Master s degree in Museum Studies and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She has been the curator of the Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery and of the Yukon Arts Centre and Director of the Gallery of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Heather Smith This presentation explores war-related crafted mementos, made of silk, cotton, and wool, going beyond the usual bits and pieces of brass trench art. Three areas will be explored in more detail: crafts made to encourage and rehabilitate convalescing soldiers, prisoner-of-war crafts, and quilts made to raise funds for wartime. All of these diverse crafted textile objects have something in common; they are evidence of how people experienced, understood and remembered war. 7 Michael Salter s hobby (obsession) is the restoration of early Austin Healey 100 sports cars. He has been involved in this pursuit both as a hobby and career for over 45 years. His own car is the 174th Austin Healey built in the first year, 1953, which he purchased as a former "parts" car in It was awarded one of the highest awards Concourse Gold at the U.S. national competition in To enable him to move the cars and their components around, he built a custom transporter specifically for the purpose. The car he is presently working on is a 1953 B #793 and has been painted in its original "Coronet Cream", a colour named after the colour of Queen Elizabeth's coronation gown. 7
