4 In 1940, Germany invaded Norway. The exiled Royal Norwegian Air Force established a training camp in Canada for young recruits who escaped from the Nazis. Little Norway opened in Toronto during 1940 and moved to Muskoka Airport, near Gravenhurst, in Little Norway s graduates distinguished themselves in overseas battles, flying in Norwegian squadrons of Britain s Royal Air Force. Norwegian squadrons hunted enemy submarines off Iceland, delivered secret agents to enemy soil, and flew dangerous missions over Germany with Bomber Command. In 1943, one squadron was named the top-scoring Allied fighter squadron in all of the Royal Air Force. Canadians can be proud of their country s assistance to Norway during a very dark hour. Torontonians and Muskokans opened their hearts to the young men. Many of the recruits married Canadian women and returned to Canada after the war. Andrea Baston grew up in Gravenhurst, Ontario. She obtained an Honours B.A. in English Literature from York University and an LL.B. from the University of Ottawa. Andrea practised law with the Ministry of the Attorney General in Toronto until retirement, after which she began writing about Muskoka s local history. Andrea and her family live in Toronto and Gravenhurst. Come and hear this fascinating story of Muskoka s history! 4
5 Wendy, Audrey, Jean and Sandy Peter, Heather, Marj and Patrick I eat like this every night! Another fabulous meal with John, Ray. Jane, Andre, Eve, Larry, Barbara, Mary Ray and BB taking the picture! The Mexican dinner theme at the Woodsides was a hot evening!...nachos, jalapeños, Mike s famous chili, curly cucumbers and la finale grande : Marguerita cheesecake! Me too! Maravillosa!! 5
6 The PROBUS duplicate bridge group is now in its 15th year. The first game was held at the home of Beryl and Paul Clayson on October 27, 2003 and has continued to be held there ever since. Ten couples played in the first game: Trudy Birch/Judy Wilson, Lynn Todgham/ Pat Hardie, Rob/Sheila Adamson, Barb/Tom Johnson, Heather/David Hockin, Baz Hutchison/Nancy Mitchell, Lynn Fletcher/Connie Kelso, Susan Dirks/Barb Baker, Anne/ Dan McKeon and Beryl/Paul Clayson. Seven of these members are still playing. Over the years, 82 people have been part of PROBUS duplicate. Duplicate bridge is played the same way as social bridge but cards are placed in boards, which circulate around the tables, so everybody plays the same hands. Games are on the 4th Monday of the month in the afternoons in winter months, and in the evenings during the summer. Games take 2 1/2 to 3 hours, and there is a $1 charge for refreshments. We are always looking for new players (especially of the male variety). You do not have to be an expert, as long as you know the basic rules of bidding and playing. The emphasis is on social bridge, and nobody has ever called the Director! Find a partner and come join us! Beryl and Paul, our hosts Paul with Connie and Diane 6
7 The night was so special that even Elvis showed up! Peggy, Diane, Heather, Mary Beth and Sandy The women enjoyed their corsages. Thanks Bob an elegant touch! Diane, Bob, Peter, Heather, Peggy, Ken and Mary Beth Great conversation, great memories! Hey it doesn t get any better than this! 7
