1 Farmington Track Official Publication of The Farmington Michigan Lodge 1986 Volume 50, No. 12 March, 2017 From the Desk of the E.R.: After writing over 40 articles for your information and enjoyment I still sit down at the computer, stare at the screen and wonder where to begin. The main incentive to overcome this writer s block is knowing that our editor is patiently waiting at her house, watching her , and playing with many images (of me) she creates. If you think I m kidding you might find her latest work inside the Track. (Thank you, Phyllis!) Seriously, I can t tell you how much I ve enjoyed serving as Exalted Ruler for our Lodge and it all is because of you, the members. During the time spend as E.R. there have always been people willing to step up and help with an event or a function, to assist with our community projects, or to serve as an officer of the Lodge. I m not saying that we ve always filled every position or that we have been as active in all the Elk functions that we should have been. I am saying we have all done a great job of improving our Lodge over the past few years. A great big thank you to everyone that stepped forward to volunteered, assist and help during our revitalization. As I step down, I would like to offer my wisdom and hard gained experience to the new Officers and Committee Chairpersons. You have volunteered to do a job for this Lodge and you are now entrusted with moving it forward. To accomplish this task you must be knowledgeable of your responsibilities and diligent in your duties. Read the manuals, learn the systems, listen to our members and understand what a great Lodge we have and see the vision of where we need to go. Remember that nothing worthwhile is ever gotten easily and you will need to make some tough choices during your term. Please don t be someone who just fills the chair at a meeting. Make sure that you allocate the proper amount of your time required, and do all the background research needed before attending a meeting so that you can fully preform the job you have accepted. Also, at this time, I m willing to offer some advice to the membership. If this Lodge is going to continue to move forward we ALL need to be involved. The effort put forth by the membership in overseeing this Lodge is the most important aspect of our survival. How many of you have taken the time to attend a meeting lately? How many of you have heard the reports about our improving financial condition? (Is it true?) How many of you are really aware of what the ever popular They are up to now? The answer to these questions, based on our average meeting attendance, should be not many. But, walk into the club room on any given evening, listen to the complaints, opinions, rumors and misinformation discussed and you would think everyone attends the meetings. Remember, an Elks Lodge is run and controlled by the membership and their voice is heard when they vote at the Lodge meeting! So, at the end of the day there is no escaping it, we the membership are all responsible for the success or failure of this Lodge. If we don t demand the best from our Officers we shouldn t complain when they fall short. If we are not there at a meeting to hear the Chairperson s Reports, why should they give them? If we are not interested in the financial condition of our Lodge, we shouldn t be surprised when the money is gone. If you are looking for the ones responsible, always start at the top we are told. Maybe we need to redraw the organizational chart to remind us who really is on the top. To the incoming officers, good luck and best wishes! To the membership, thank you for allowing me to serve as your ER. To all those who have helped and supported me, I will be forever gratefully for your assistance! It has been my distinct privilege, pleasure and honor to serve as the Exalted Ruler of the Farmington Elk s Lodge #1986 for the past 2½ years! I wouldn t trade the time for anything! Thank You and Godspeed!
