1 St. Joseph Council #8954 July 2014 Richardson, Texas Volume 29, Issue 1 NEW OFFICERS INSTALLED FOR YEAR Following the Installation of newly elected officers for , the happy new officers posed for a group photo. They are eager to take up their duties to insure a successful Fraternal Year. My Brother Knights, From the Grand Knight With great humility, I introduce myself as your Grand Knight and I ask for your help. I am honored that you have chosen me to be your Grand Knight for this fraternal year. It has been a pleasure serving as your Deputy Grand Knight and I look forward to working with you to make this year a great year for our Council. I must thank the past Grand Knight, Rick Bentine, for his outstanding leadership in guiding the Council for the past two years. I recall when Rick expressed his theme and goal for our Council. His vision focused on doing more for our St. Joseph Parish Community. Reflecting on the last two years and the progress our Council has made towards an increased presence and visibility in the parish, I feel that goal was accomplished. It is with this sense of accomplishment that I propose we set our theme for this Fraternal Year as: Give Thanks! May this year be our opportunity not only to thank God for being at our side always, but also to thank the parishioners at St. Joseph who allow us to make our Council a successful ministry. I urge all Brother Knights to help increase the exposure of our Council within the parish, through collaboration, increased event participation, and attracting the help of those Brother Knights who may have forgotten why they initially joined the Knights of Columbus. I propose we utilize this year as an opportunity to show our thanks to the members of the parish through further educating and informing them of who we are and what we stand for in today s world. Each of you, Brother Knights, has a talent which you can share with our Council. Many of you already give of your time to actively utilize these talents and I thank you. As our past Grand Knight stated, TIME is one of the most valuable resources we have to give to our families, the church, and the Knights. I completely understand the demands on your time and simply ask we seek another means of using your talent when time cannot be provided. Together, with careful consideration and some creativity, we can dedicate ourselves to living out the four principles we adhere to: Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. I invite all of you, whether you are a long time member or one who has recently joined, to give thanks this year through participation in one or more of our planned activities. There will be a list of events at the August General meeting that will need your support. Finally, I offer this passage from the biblical book I admire most. I hope St. Paul s message will both inspire you and provide the anchor for this year s theme. (Continued on page 5)

Program begins at 1:30 p.m. following the 12:15 Mass. Five Knights are required for the Patriotic Readings before each decade of the rosary. This is a very moving ceremony joining faith and patriotism with each of the fifty states remembered in each Hail Mary of the rosary. 3 Council Goals Supreme has established the criteria that describe an Outstanding Council. These criteria are the components of the Star Award that is presented annually to those Councils that exhibit those outstanding traits of Council achievement and management. These are high membership participation in Council activities and increased membership enrollment.. Members Approve Budget The Council budget was approved by the members at the June Business Meeting. There were no major changes from last year budget. Total income for the year is expected to be $30,209. This is $322., (1.07%) higher than last year. Total expenses are budgeted to be $20,179, or $272. This is 1.3% more than last year. Members attending Business Meetings % Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun 1. Enroll 18 new members 2. The golf tournament has been deleted and planning is underway to replace the tournament with a wine and cheese tasting party and dinner. Some Councils have had much success with a wine and cheese affair. Fund raising activities generating the most funds are Casino Night Auction and Raffle, Garage Sale, Breakfast Burritos, Parish Food Drive, Bingos, and Shoe Bins. These activities comprise 75% of the fund raising budget. Assessments are expected to be less this year while Council social expenses are expected to increase. This is due to increased cost of the Clergy Appreciation Dinner, the Wives Appreciation Dinner, and additional allocations budgeted for refreshments at the monthly Business meetings. The charity disbursements are expected to be slightly higher this year compared to last year. 4 Lector Describes Paris Churches At the Business Meeting, the Lector, Ken Ducote, describes Sacre Couer Basilica is dedicated to the Sacred heart of Jesus. It is located on Montmarte, the highest point in Paris and owes its name to the martyrdom of St. Dennis the Patron Saint of France, who was decapitated on the hill around 250AD. The church originated in 1870 and was dedicated in Since 1885, before construction was completed, the Blessed Sacrament has been continually on display in a monstrance above the high altar. Perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament has continued uninterrupted since Chapel of the Miraculous Medal The chapel where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared To Catherine Laboure in 1830 and requested the creation of the medal which came to be known as the miraculous medal. It is also the motherhouse of the daughters of St. Vincent de Paul. Sainte Chapelle Sainte Chapelle was concerated in1248. It was commissioned by King Louis IX to house his collection of Passion Relics, including Christ s Crown of Thorns. The most famous features of the chapel are the great stained glass windows illustrating scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom to Serve will take place from June 21 to July 4, 2014, a time when our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. The theme of this year's Fortnight will focus on the freedom to serve the poor and vulnerable in accord with human dignity and the Church's teaching. Brother Thomas Poovey, Jr. Elected Deputy Grand Knight Thomas was born in San Antonio, Texas. He attended Robert E. lee High School, the San Antonio Junior college, and graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in Mechanical Engineer and minors in Chemistry and Computer Science. He married Gayle Ann Lopez. They have two sons. He is employed by Schneider Electric in Carrollton as Senior Application Engineer for Software and Hardware. His company is involved with high level computer controlled computer systems. Some of the sites they control are Radio City Music hall, the Pentagon, the White House, and the Treasury of the UK where the Queen s crowns are kept. Thomas joined the Knights in 1997 and is a Fourth Degree member of the Mother Teresa Assembly. He has been involved in many parish ministries. He has been an usher and with Gayle for over ten years has been active in the Pro-Life Outreach through the Gabriel Angels program. As Deputy Grand Knight his goal is to increase the enrollment of new members and assist the Retention Chairman to increase the involvement of current members in Council activities. 4

5 Welcome New Members Knights Enjoy Baseball Game Kerry Thornhill (left) and Vincente Gandara, Jr. were inducted into the Council and enrolled into the First Degree on Thursday, June 26, at St. Joseph Church. Both are graduates of the Parish RCIA program and joined the Church on Holy Saturday. Kerry currently lives in Richardson. He is a native of Garland and graduated from the Lakeview Centenial High School. He attended North Texas University in Denton where he studied Philosophy and English Literature. He is presently a real estate broker associated with the Virginia Cook Realtors on Preston and Northwest Highway. His current hobbies include reading, especially Engligh Literature. His main interests in life are God, family and real estate. Vincente graduated from Garland High School and married Jenny, his high school sweetheart. They live in Garland. He is employed by Ratheon in the platting department. His main interests are making rosaries and studying Apologetics in defense of the Catholic Faith. He has joined the Knights to participate in the real relationship of brotherhood and the opportunity to help the needy. Give a warm weclome to Kerry and Vincente. (1Thessalonians 5:14-18) Adrian Rodriguez Grand Knight Many members enjoyed the annual baseball game at the Roughriders Stadium in Frisco. All attendees enjoyed a fast paced game as the Midland Rock Hounds beat the Frisco Roughriders. It was a cool late spring evening. Included in the price of the ticket are trips to the refreshment stand for hot dogs, bratwurst sandwiches, and nachos, washed down with all the Dr. Pepper you can drink. Free refreshments are available until an hour and a half after the game begins. There were over 20 hits in the ball game, including several home runs. If you missed this year s game, you may want to put the game next year on your calendar. You will enjoy a thrilling inexpensive evening.
