I hadn t before had the opportunity to spend much time in conversation with him though he has participated in some plays and readings that I ve directed. I learned much about him. Tim doesn t have much leisure time as he s involved in chess club, wrestling, lacrosse and football. He s not involved in any travel teams and it sounds as if he wouldn t have time anyway. One interest he has is in competition with local schools to solve mathematical problems. The group is called Mathletes and they compete monthly, often presenting with some real challenges. His Mom adds that he is a member of the National Honor Society. He still plays piano well having learned from Mrs. Kotylo, but now just plays for his own enjoyment. He does like to hunt and bagged a deer last year, but time is pretty limited for him in pursing this. Tim isn t working now, but has his sights set on going to Alfred State to learn forensics. It is a 4 year program which includes general studies and this will give him time to explore the various aspects of forensics in practice. Now, he s taking a course for college credit in forensics through Syracuse University. Maybe in the future we ll see him as a consultant on the show CSI (my thoughts, not his). At present, he thinks after his education he d like to locate in Pennsylvania and get a job there. Through his career in sports, he s sustained many injuries which he seems to shrug off as nothing much. Through his life, Tim has been a regular in Sunday School and Youth Group and has been available for many other avenues of service to our church family, often behind the scenes. Tim, we re glad that you re a part of this church and we pray God s guidance and grace in your future pursuits. -Submitted by Diane Runion
3 NATURAL DISASTERS IN THE U.S./RESPONSE As you are painfully aware, our country has been hit by numerous natural disasters over the past few months Hurricane Harvey which has hit the coast of Texas and Louisiana; Hurricane Irma which hit Florida; raging forest fires in California, and of late; the devastation of Puerto Rico by hurricanes Irma and Maria. Our American Baptist Church has an efficient way of helping here and around the world to ease the suffering and rebuild after disasters, man-made and natural. As we give to the One Great Hour of Sharing offering, those monies are funneled to the sites needed relief. We generally collect that offering in June, but if your heart is stirred by specific events that have occurred, you may give at any time by writing a check to OGHS; annotate for that event and include your church name. You can also go to and click Give Now. There will a bulletin insert the first week in November detailing our denomination s response and plans to help in Puerto Rico. Check it out. BREADBOX OFFERING THIS MONTH BANDERA FAMILY FREE CHRISTMAS DINNER This will be the Bandera Family s 28th year of providing a free dinner to residents of Binghamton and the surrounding areas on Christmas Day. The dinner brings together people from all walks of life. We fellowship, celebrate life and we feed those in need. The family along with many volunteers and the help of financial support, average 3,500 meals including 1,500 meal deliveries to home bound residents and to other locations. Meals are served at the American Legion Post 80 in Binghamton and the Boys and Girls Club in Endicott. The scope of this ministry has expanded considerably since its start, hence the need for financial support and volunteers. Volunteers have been so moved by the experience they have stayed on as yearly help. This is a non-profit organization that hopes to expand to all of Broome County. Any donation is greatly appreciated. In giving though our church s Breadbox Offering, checks should be made to Main Street Baptist Church and annotated for Nov. Breadbox or the Bandera Family Dinner. Gifts can also be given through the web at The dinner is so much more than the food served. CONSIDER THE GEESE By Browne Barr in Parables, Etc. This fall when you see geese heading south for the winter flying along in V formation, you might be interested in knowing what science has discovered about why they fly that way. It has been learned that each bird flaps its wings creating an uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in V formation, the whole flock adds at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own. (Christians who share a common direction and a sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier, because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.) Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone, and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front. (If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those who are headed the same way we are going.) When the lead goose gets tired, he rotates back in the wing and another goose flies point. (It pays to take turns doing hard jobs with people at church or with geese flying south.) The geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. (What do we say when we honk from behind?) Finally, (now I want you to get this) when a goose gets sick or is wounded by gun shot and falls out, two geese fall out of formation and follow him down to help and protect him. They stay with him until he is either able to fly, or until he is dead; then they launch out on their own or with another formation. (If people knew we would stand by them like that in church, they would push down these walls to get in.) As our pastor has retired and we are in the process of finding another, it s all the more important that we consider the lesson of the geese.

5 GIVING THANKS IN 1937 This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the United States entry into World War I. Our ninth pastor, Rev. John Sivewright ( ) was a World War I veteran. On Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1937, Main Street Baptist, like many other area churches, held services. Our service was from 10AM to 11AM. The following are excerpts from Rev. Sivewright s message. The notes of his sermons were recently donated to the church and provide great insights for that time period. They are a welcomed addition to the history files and we give thanks for them. November 25, AM Giving Thanks Always Ephesians 5:19-20 How well God knew, when this was written, that the church would become permeated with music that was not appropriate for his glory. Can you give thanks for your sickness? For your troubles? When? All the time. I can see the Hebrew priests bringing water from what they called The wells of salvation, after they had dipped their pitchers full of gallons of water and balanced them on their shoulders. They came up with them while the great choir chanted I will take the cup of salvation : I will call upon the name of the Lord. They did this year after year, generation after generation, until one day a young man stood in the background saying. I am the Water of Life. I ll be thankful this morning for the country of ours; for this flag and for the Christian flag beside it. Have we not something to be thankful for, in His bounty Were there 5,000 in the churches in the Triple Cities for Thanksgiving out of 80,000? As a mother watches her son this afternoon using his brain and brawn to play on that football field, I think she has a right to pray for him. But I think she ought to go to church and pray first. Sport is good for their bodies: but this comes first. I expect a special blessing for you who took the time off to come to this service. Jesus heeled the 10 lepers. He sent them to the priests before He would heal them. He would not break the law of the land. Only one came back to thank Jesus. The broken-hearted Christ said where there not ten? Where are the nine? I see one man coming home to his little girl. He picks her up, he kisses his wife for the first time; he is healed, NO THANKS TO THE HEALER! I see a blacksmith, shoeing his horses, hand all healed. No thanks to the healer! You have come to give thanks for summer ended, a nation at peace, most of all for Christ. Nine men were healed of leprosy, that s all. One man had has soul saved because he came back to give thanks. Sources: Sermon of the Rev. John Sivewright.
