1 Careline newsletter MONTHLY PUBLICATION OF CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH JUNE 2015 The Harvest is Upon Us by Dennis Spire, Pastor A month of disaster but a month of blessing! I really don t where to begin. The end of May and the beginning of June has been such an emotional roller-coaster. You see the devastation all over our city, county and state. It puts a pit in your stomach to see all that people have gone through, and will continue to go through for quite a while. I had the responsibility to strive to minister to one of the families in Wimberley and to be with them when their 6 year old boy was confirmed dead. When you look into the eyes of man who lost his whole family in this devastation, you began to realize you don t have any answers. All you can do is pray and let God do His work. Clichés don t mend broken and bruised hearts, only God can. You see the homes and lives that have been shattered, people displaced and desperate and they are wondering, What am I going to do now? Then you see many that simply Texas Baptist Men Disaster Relief Thank you Texas Baptist Men (and women) Disaster Relief!! What would Wimberley/San Marcos have done without you? You have brought SO much relief to many people with hard, back-breaking work! We know that you do this in Jesus name and for His Kingdom. Thank you for responding so quickly and so efficiently! 3 roll up their sleeves and get after it again. These types of disasters bring the worst out in some people and the best in others. I want to thank you and encourage you as a church for the following: 1. Thank you for your patience. I know we have been a little out of our usual routine. Thank you for being flexible with Sunday School and having people in the classrooms. 2. Thank you for your generosity. Many of you have been generous to donate needed supplies and also donated money that made ministry and helping many people not only materially but spiritually. 3. Thank you for your hard work! I am so pleased with people stepping up to the plate and first praying. Secondly, you have ministered to these men and women that have come into our community to work. Several have been here every morning cooking breakfast and getting lunches ready. That has been a big help. Lunches have been delivered into the community and is an encouragement for those that are devastated and many times, hungry. 4. Thank you fro being a church that just does not sit upon a hill and say we will pray, but we pray and then we go and do. Now here are some of the blessings that comes along with your efforts and your response to help others: We have met many new fellow believers that love the Lord and there is a new, kindred spirit. There is a softening of some pretty hard hearts. I have seen grown men weep and heard much heartfelt Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. gratitude for all that has been done. People are grateful not only for the work coming out of Calvary, but for all those that are involved across the city. If you drive the streets, who do you see out there with sleeves rolled up and digging in and helping? I would say, 85-90% of all the volunteers out there represent a Christian organization. What a testimony for the Lord in a city that needs to see Jesus Christ exalted. I read an article the other day where our President stated that Evangelicals are more interest in saving babies that fighting poverty. I wish he could take a peek at real compassion. This is the blessing of seeing the church be the church the way the church ought to be reaching out to a world that needs to see, hear, and experience God s love. It is a blessing to see people jumping in and doing whatever they can do for others. It is so easy to help your own, but to reach out and touch others is the way in-roads are made to plow, plant seeds, water, and harvest. I have been stressing that in my sermons these past weeks and here it is. We need to look up and see that the fields are white unto harvest and it is time to reap before the harvest is not able to be reaped. Thanks again Calvary for your faithfulness during this time. 4 Announcements Upcoming Events Sunday, June 21 Not only is this Father s Day Sunday, but it is also our send-off for Ken Naquin, our Student Minister who will be moving his family to Scotland to minister in a church there. We will have a special time in the service and also a lunch afterwards. There will be no evening activities. We hope everyone will be here for this special time of gratitude and good-bye. We ll put out a basket for cards, gifts and token of appreciation. June 28 July 2 is Vacation Bible School! It s almost time for VBS! Our theme this year is Journey Off The Map. As always we will be needing help with all that Vacation Bible School entails. If you would like to help in any way, please contact our Children s Minister, Angie McCoy at or angiemccoy3@gmail.com. VBS is from 6:00 8:30 PM Sunday Thursday.

Sonora felt strongly for fathers because of the affection she received from her own father Mr. William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran. Sonora's mother died while childbirth when she was just 16. Mr. Smart raised the newborn and five other children with love and care. Inspired by Ms Anna Jarvis's struggle to promote Mother's Day, Ms Dodd began a rigorous campaign to celebrate Father's Day in US. The Spokane Ministerial Association and the local Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) supported Sonora's cause. As a result Spokane celebrated its first Father's Day on June 19, Though there was initial hesitation the idea gained gradual popularity all over US and Fathers Day came to be celebrated in cities across the country.
