2 Opportunities in our Global Community Come the last Wednesday of each month to help with this missions endeavour. I am very excited to announce that these 10 completed bags that we have been working on since January, will be distributed in Africa by a CBWOQ (Canadian Baptist Women of Ontario & Quebec) mission team. Thanks to everyone who has taken part in this worthwhile cause. Please remember to collect the small hotel bars of soap as well as new facecloths, and turn them in to the church office marked DAYS FOR GIRLS. Women & girls around the world will greatly appreciate receiving their beautiful bag so they can get their days back each month and continue with their education. Every girl, everywhere, period. If you would like more information, go to or come to Herrington Hall on the last Wednesday of each month, September through June from 9:30-11:30am to see where you can take part or speak to Heather Skeates. A family loses their home after a natural disaster. A farmer can barely survive on what she grows. The causes of poverty run deep. They are both individual and collective. Through CBM s ministries we witness the impacts caused by systemic, endemic and chronic injustice, and we choose not to remain silent. Together, we can do something about it. God s Word tells us that where evil increases, even more, His grace is found (Romans 5:20) Take a journey with us through the pages of this catalogue, and discover how your gifts of love can multiply in the lives of people around the world. 4 The Parent s Page Helpful tips for raising spiritual healthy children What are spiritual disciplines? It s not a phrase we commonly hear today, even at church. Spiritual disciplines are very straightforward, practical steps toward developing a Christian character and a deeper relationship with God. Most of us have heard of several of them prayer, worship, service, fasting, celebration although we may not have seen how they are all connected. Why do we need these spiritual disciplines? Once we have been saved through Christ, why do we need to do things to discipline our spiritual nature? Well, even though we are redeemed, we are also fallen. Our corrupted human natures constantly fight against our renewed spiritual nature, so we must make it strong, putting on the whole armor of God (Eph. 6:13). Furthermore, as C.S. Lewis frequently pointed out, humans are material as well as spiritual beings. What we believe must be expressed in action, or we will soon lose those beliefs. Maria von Trapp, whose family became famous through the musical The Sound of Music, put it this way in her autobiography: as long as we live here on earth, we simply are not pure spirits, but we also have... a very human heart, and that heart needs outward signs of its inward affections. 1 And it is actually more effective to teach kids about Jesus through spiritual disciplines than it is to try to get them to feel converted. We learn truths as children through traditions and habitual practices that we come to identify with what is important in life. Learning and practicing spiritual disciplines will help children to ground their faith more firmly and live it out intelligently and with purpose. It is essential to teach children spiritual disciplines before they go out into the world and find themselves in situations where their faith will be tested. They cannot be expected to exercise righteous judgment in the world unless they have previously learned and assimilated the virtues that will enable them to make the right decisions when faced with an attack on their faith. Each month, we will present a new spiritual discipline to practice with your children. For November, we will focus on prayer. Prayer is probably the first spiritual discipline most Christian parents teach their kids. Even so, it is important to make prayer a meaningful part of life for our children. One of the best ways to help your children understand the importance of prayer is to ask them to pray for you, about issues that concern your family or the world. This will help children to understand that prayer is one of the most wonderful ways through which God enables us to take part in caring for His Creation; that when we pray, we are actually participating in addressing the concerns we are bringing to God to solve. The following page is a calendar for you to print out for each child and help them keep track of their faith steps.

6 Opportunities in our Local Community As the cold weather slowly creeps in and Christmas draws nearer, the needs of those less fortunate stir our thoughts and hearts. Please consider these organizations that depend on our generosity as you give and serve. KINGSVILLE GOODFELLOWS Applications for Christmas Hampers may be made directly to the Kingsville Goodfellow (Epworth United Church) November 13 th, 15 th, 20 th, 22 nd, 27 th & 29 th from 10am-12pm & 1:30-3:30pm. November 29 th is final registration day. Apply early. Refer to bulletin board in the lobby. Donations for jam for these hampers can be given in our church on November 4 th. Put a Child on Your Christmas List Once again this Christmas, it is our privilege as a church family to give Christmas presents to children in our community. This is an opportunity to adopt a child from the community and shop for them as if they are a member of your family. Information with the child s age, sizes and preferences will be available in the lobby at the end of November. We are asking for $ to be spent on each child. You may adopt one (or more!) or you are welcome to donate money. Please place unwrapped gifts in a large gift bag with wrapping paper and tape and return to the church by December 13 th for distribution.
