Abigail, often known as Abby, enjoys Math and Social Studies in school and participates in several activities. You can see her doing free-style and breaststroke on the swim team this season, and she has been in the school choir and band, playing flute. Drawing and painting, including the medium of oils is a favorite past-time. Abby has taken piano lessons from Mrs. Kotylo and would like to continue when a new teacher is found. We ve been blessed by her joining our adult church choir and singing soprano. She has in mind as a goal for the future, being a teacher maybe of music or general education in 3rd grade. She s involved in a fine arts diploma program in school which features extra art and music, something new to me, but apparently a very beneficial adjunct for those who have a creative beat. When I asked who or what has influenced her life, Abby said that some teachers are good role models and really care for the kids. Also she mentioned family as shaping her as a person. Abigail sustained serious injury some years ago having been hit by a car near her home. Through this difficult time, she found who her real friends were, many showing support and providing help even when she was in Upstate Medical being treated. One teacher came to the house every day. Our church family showed up at the Farr s home to provide a Christmas party and to see for themselves that she was improving. Abigail, we are blessed to have you as part of our church family. -Submitted by Diane Runion

3 SOUP LUNCHEON AND FASHION SHOW Thank you to all who participated to make the event a huge success. Thank you to those who made soup Toby Lyon, Nancy Devine, Gail Welter, Amanda Svoboda and Margaret Fassett. Our Models made a big hit, and they were: Jack Svoboda, Gorden Blakeney, Lily Bowers, Kathy Wilcox, Nyasia Copeland, Malachi Copeland, Nathan David and Beth Blakeney. Gail Welter made the centerpieces and helped set up, and many helped clean up afterward. The Warks picked up the bread from Panera Bread and afterward delivered what was left to The Rescue Mission. It was such a fun event and one that was informative about two of the ministries God has given us. If you wish to help out with the Soup Kitchen on the 4th Saturday of the month, speak with Maynard Wark. Thank you, Your Mission Committee Our World Mission Offering begins October 1st and continues through the month of October, raising money for training new global servants, caring for the ones on the field and providing the services and resources that they need. This effort of reaching people for Christ around the world has been going on in this denomination for 203 years. The Gospel still resonates with people s hearts and minds and changes lives for God s glory. We have a video that we ll show at some point, most likely in an evening service that illustrates to us on the home front some of the work that is being done as a result of your sacrificial giving for mission outreach. You will receive offering envelopes in the mail or they will be available in the bulletin racks for your use. Please prayerfully consider what your contribution will be. The Breadbox offering will supplement the World Mission Offering. Letter from Katherine Niles (paraphrase) Katherine and Wayne Niles are thankful for God s provision of a doctor to staff the Vanga hospital in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The previous doctor was injured in a motorcycle accident. Dr. Alain who had previously been trained as a nurse was familiar with how to build health in a rural community and has done much to strengthen the health care of the area which has been without leadership for 5 months. Much was in disarray, but Dr. Alain met with the staff, the area chiefs, and members of the villages about, building relationships that are key to being accepted and respected. He worked to ensure that the local water supply which had been contaminated and caused massive diarrhea was protected from human and animal intrusion to keep the spring clear and free-running. A permanent, covered reservoir will be established soon. Proper surgical equipment, lights, new sterilizer, ultrasound equipment and many other improvements are in the offing. Dr. Alain is God s gift to this area. God works in incredible ways. TIM LONG OCTOBER We have the privilege of hosting missionary Tim Long to tell of his and his wife s ministry to Baja, California and Mexico. They began service in 1996, Patti ministering as a special education teacher in Tijuana and Tim serving in leadership development through the Baja Baptist Seminary. He teaches present and future church leaders at the Baja campus and extension centers. He also coordinates a scholarship program for seminary students. He has visuals of his works and is an engaging speaker. Please come and learn of this outreach. Refreshments will be served following the program. Last time Tim was here, he had us try some Mexican cookies which were.well, maybe he ll bring them again. If you can t come to this meeting, Conklin Ave Baptist will have him speak at their church the next evening. There will be a dish to pass supper ahead of his talk at 6PM.

4 Main Street Baptist was approached by Mary Ann Dorner, Mentor NOW Coordinator for the Binghamton City School District, to seek adult volunteers for the NYS Mentoring program in the elementary schools in Binghamton. Mentoring is a structural and trusting relationship that brings a young person together with a caring individual who offers guidance, support and encouragement aimed at developing the competence and character of the mentee. Right now there are 5,800 students in Binghamton, with a poverty level of 84%. Help is need to interact with these students. Each mentor is asked to commit one hour a week to a specific student during the school year. Students are nominated by their school. All meetings are at a school building the same day and time each week under the guidance of a school official. No meetings are done off-site. Activities include games, puzzles, and most important of all, listening and talking with your mentee. Sometimes there are group activities with all the participants; however, most of the time this is a one-on-one event. If you are interested in taking part in this vital program, please reach out to Arlene & Clare Price. Home phone ; Clare s cell ; Arlene s cell Harvest Dinner Saturday November 4 5 PM Turkey, dressing, drinks and desserts will provided Please bring a dish to pass Sign-ups will be October 8 & October 29. Hope to see you there!

5 As we have now heard officially, Pastor and Peggy Bennett s last day with us will be October 22nd. (see attached letter). The following is from the January 1982 Artery. Pastor Ellword Schaumberg was filling in as an interim minister until a permanent pastor could be secured. Rev. Timothy Bennett started his ministry with us that same month. One other interesting note is Margaret Kotylo was the editor of the Artery for this edition. Just about the time you receive this issue of your news sheet, Mrs. Schaumberg and I will be finishing our stay with you. During this time we have truly enjoyed being with you and having part in your ministry. Thank you for receiving us so warmly into your fellowship. It was specifically rewarding to be with you for the wonderful Christmas season. Bill Gage was a great companion in visiting the sick and shut-ins. Through him I came to meet and know some I would not have otherwise met. This is a wonderful lay ministry you have and I trust you will continue to strengthen it with your new pastor. I believe God has great things for Main Street Baptist church. Rev. Bennett will be here as your pastor. Pray for him daily and give him your earnest support. Remember adjusting is a two way street. He, as a new kid on the block so to speak, will have to adjust to a new pastorate, and you will have to adjust to a new leadership. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit I know you will be able to work together. Paul said to Timothy: let no man despise your youth, but be though an example to the believers. We always look to our Pastors as examples. Rev. Bennett will be setting before you his understanding of the word of God and the way he sees it should be made relevant for your church. Give him that opportunity and the time needed to discover the way he is leading. May God continue to bless you all richly in Christ -Pastor Schaumberg The new kid on the block ended up staying with us for 35 years. The longest ministry in Main Street Baptists history. And yet he does not look a day older. One of the many qualities I appreciated in Pastor Bennett was his knowledge of Church history and doctrine. He could discuss these matters in an intelligent way. In fact, under his ministry, the Apostles Creed was added to the Communion Sunday Service. Peggy Bennett added a great deal to the worship service with her wonderful musical talents. The youth choir has benefitted from her leadership. The Bennett s will be missed immensely here, but know they will be a great blessing in their future endeavors. - Teresa Luckert
