Nathan recently turned 18 and has an interesting story to tell. Near his 18th birthday, he had a birthday Fundraiser online to benefit the American Cancer Society. Here is what he wrote: For my birthday this year, I m asking for donations to the American Cancer Society. I ve chosen this non-profit because their mission means a lot to me and I hope you ll consider contributing as a way to celebrate with me. Every little bit will help me reach my goal. His goal was $200 and he raised $220. He had 1,156,732 likes on his page. Wow! Nathan s family has suffered many losses, many to cancer, and he has a couple of relatives at this time who are still struggling with cancer and its after effects. I asked him what has helped him deal with so many losses and heartaches and he said that family and friends, even kids at school who don t know him well, were supporting him in many ways. Nathan is a senior at Susquehanna Valley High School, but is in a pilot program called P-Tech through BOCES in conjunction with BCC in which he takes general education courses that will give him an equivalent 2 year degree. These course credits are transferable. History is his favorite. He doesn t want to continue with college, but wants to put his computer skills which he s gained from hands-on work into programming and graphic design. He s looking at applying at a business in Montreal that does graphic design for computer games. Ultimately, his goals are to travel everywhere. Nathan is working at Burger King and has for 2 years or so. In his spare time, he likes to be outside and really likes football. We re glad to have Nathan so active in our church, and I know from prior experience, that he s generally willing to do what is asked. God bless you as you anticipate your future. 3 LETTER FROM THE DUNNEMANS to the Missions Committee We were so surprised to receive your very generous gift to us! We love you all as family in Christ, and so appreciate your support of the ministry that keeps us away from our spiritual home. Your gift is very timely. We are in Florida at our winter base, my cousin s home. Southern Florida doesn t really get snowbirds till January, so they are not booking us in November. Here on the Panhandle of Florida, we have no contacts, so we have few programs here either. We are using our free days to help my cousin who is legally blind with glaucoma and is 89 years old. Doing yard work, painting and making home repairs is also ministry. Thank you for your gift. It is especially helpful this month. Main Street is always in our prayers, especially now as you search for an interim pastor, then a full time replacement for Tim. This offering makes it possible to continue to provide emergency assistance and a Thank You check to all who are eligible. The offering supports those who have devoted 15 or more years of their lives to God s service. Pastor Bennett s father and mother were recipients, and most likely, Rev. Bennett and Peggy who have served 35 years here and 4 in another church will get help through your generosity. Some of the monies that we send out go to people we don t know, but we give because God is so generous to us. The RMMO has faces that we can t put to it. We will receive the offering for the first 2 weeks of December and if you didn t get an envelope, there are some at the back of the church in the bulletin rack. Our goal is $600 and the breadbox offering for December will help meet the goal. Thank You. SO WHAT IS ABW MINISTRIES? Maybe there are many of you who have no idea about our American Baptist Women s Ministries and what it does. It was begun years back to assist with the funding and support of missionaries here abroad, an most churches in the denomination still have women who continue this ministry. Some churches meet as a general body and have circle groups (small groups) that meet in homes to do hand work and contribute to special projects, at the same time building friendships among those who attend and enhancing their spiritual growth. We contribute goods to ministries such as hand-rolled bandages, requested items such as school supplies, clothing and over and above financial support. We meet locally and along with our association, ours is the Broome/Tioga Association, 9 churches in all. Beginning in January, on a Saturday morning, we will meet to prepare and roll bandages to be sent abroad to defray the costs of disposable bandaging material. You can learn a lot about people when you work together, so we have a good time. Be on the look-out for this. You now have opportunity to donate needed items for Cameron Community Ministry in Rochester. If you sign up for one, please have it turned in by the middle of January. Many of you know Charlene Shafer who sings in our choir. She belongs to another church, but has given much of her time and talents to the worship and workings or our church. She is soon to complete a project of giving out hats and mittens to the disadvantaged kids of Horace Mann and Theodore Roosevelt Schools. The numbers are staggering - there are 425 kids of low income families in Theodore Roosevelt, and her goal is 677 individually bagged hats and closely matched mittens for the children of both schools. Some were donated, some purchased, and many sewn and knitted herself, her Bible Study group, her quilt guild, and other individuals who are aware of the project. They will be given out the first week in December. Charlene also made a lovely quilt with stars on it representing the sacrifice of our military. That was raffled off last week and the money she raised, will be donated to Fisher House (80%) and to Wounded Warrior (20%). Her many efforts to help in the community should be applauded for Charlene certainly gives of her best all the time. Thank you! MISSIONS MISCELLANEOUS: $745 came in for Hurricane Harvey relief which is applied to the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering THANK YOU! Did you know that the Lamb to Loom group that meets in our church the first Saturday of the month has been donating hand made scarves and other items to our clothing room?

5 December 2017 Artery One of Main Street s Baptist s strengths is its solid support of missions. In 1952, a Women s Missionary Society was formed. All women church members automatically became a member of the Society. The theme for the year was Beyond the Stars (Job 22:12). Rev. It is my prayer that this coming year we may so yield our lives to Him that together we may shine as the brightness of the firmament and turn many to righteousness - as we are told in Daniel 12:3 Bind us in fellowship - God this we pray; Give us wisdom and courage Lest we fail in our duties today. With thy Spirit as our leader, All our hearts shall be as one. God grant us fellowship with thy dear Son. - Sincerely Yours, Betty Abbey Library News Every December, the Southern Baptist denomination takes up the Lottie Moon Missions offering. Miss Moon was a missionary to China living through the Boxer rebellion, plague outbreaks and famines. She brought great attention to mission support needs. She dies in December 24, For those interested in the library is a book about Lottie called Send the Light by Cathy Butler. It mentions Miss Moon s funeral was held at the Second Baptist Church, Richmond, Virginia. Our very own, Rev. Dr. Brownville would go on to minister there after leaving Main Street Baptist in World History Jerusalem is Taken was the Binghamton Press s front page headline on December 10, During World War 1, the British army defeated the Ottomans in Jerusalem. The article also noted the victory ended 673 years of Muslim control of the city.
