1 A monthly newsletter for members and friends of First Baptist Church of Painesville - November 2018 Church Link FROM THE PASTORS DESK Help is just a Prayer away At one time scientists thought it was impossible for a jet to exceed the speed of sound because every time it was attempted, the shock waves would cause the pilots to lose control. But on October 14, 1947, Chuck Yeager finally broke the sound barrier and discovered that after the violent shaking and a loud boom, the sky turned into a calm sea of air. In the spiritual realm, it may seem like we face a similar barrier which feels impenetrable the prayer barrier. However, if what we believe about God and what He says about prayer are true, then prayer is the greatest source of untapped power in our lives and in the Church. In Mark 11:24 Jesus give us the secret to answered prayers therefore I say unto you, what things so ever you desire, when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you shall have them. However, we never want to take a verse of scripture out of context to diminish its full meaning. If we look closely at verses we see Jesus using this moment to teach the disciples and us today a valuable lesson about prayer. The kind of prayer that moves mountains is prayer for the fruitfulness of God` Kingdom. It would seem impossible to move a mountain into the sea, so Jesus used that illustration to show that God can do the impossible. God will answer our prayers but not as a result of our positive mental attitude. Other conditions must be met. (1) you must be a believer; (2) you must not hold a grudge against another person; (3) you must not pray with selfish motives; (4) your request must be for the good of God`s kingdom. To pray effectively, you need faith in God, not faith in the object of your request. (Continued on next page.)

2 (Continued from first page.) Our prayers are often motivated by our own interests and desires. We like to hear that we can have anything. But Jesus prayed with God`s interests in mind. When we pray, we can express our desires, but we should want his will above ours. When Jesus prayed on his way to Calvary he had a desire for the cup of suffering to be removed, but he said nevertheless not my will but thy will be done. Maybe you have not broken through the barrier in the spiritual realm because your prayers have been focused on you and not on the interests of God. There is a need here at First Baptist Church and I m looking for a few prayer warriors who will pray to the Lord of the harvest so that He might send forth laborers into the vineyard. Because, you see the harvest in plentiful but it is the laborers that are few (Matthew 9:37-38). Hosanna Circle November 5, 2018 is the date. 7:00 p.m. at the church is the time/place. Sisters you are the ones we need at the meeting. Surely hope you are able to come to help us make decisions on upcoming preparations and events! Jacquie Wolf Yes, there is much work to be done and Help is just a Prayer away. Yours in Christ, Pastor Edwards A big THANK YOU We are grateful for your food donations. We helped 6 families during October. Please check the expiration dates before bringing your donations to the church and give only items which have not expired, please. We cannot give out expired food. Thank you.

3 Thanksgiving Baskets FBCP will be collecting food to put together Thanksgiving baskets for members of our congregation again this year. If you attend FBCP, are in need of some help in preparing your Thanksgiving meal, and would like a basket, please contact Wendy Fredebaugh or call the office. As a congregation, we are grateful that we can share our abundance with our brothers and sisters in need. In November, there will be a sign-up sheet on the table in the foyer for suggested food items needed to fill food baskets. Please jot down your name and the amount of each item you will give and bring your donations no later than Sunday, Nov. 18. Thank you!. 4 How did Thanksgiving end up on the 4th Thursday? By the 1850s, governors in 25 states and two territories were proclaiming a day of thanksgiving. Various Presidents from President George Washington to President James Madison had also proclaimed a day of thanksgiving, though Madison s day was not in the fall. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day on the final Thursday of November. The day has been celebrated annually since his declaration in the middle of the American Civil War. In 1939, there were five Thursdays in November and President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared the fourth Thursday as Thanksgiving. With the country still recovering from the Great Depression, Roosevelt sought an extended Christmas season for merchants. In both 1940 and 1941, Roosevelt declared the third Thursday as Thanksgiving. However, many states disregarded the change in dates. In October 1941, Congress passed a joint resolution returning the celebration to the last Thursday in November. However, a compromise in December of that year proclaimed the date for Thanksgiving as the Fourth Thursday of November. President Roosevelt signed the bill, setting the date for Thanksgiving Day as a matter of federal law. Be Thankful Poet Unknown Be thankful that you don't already have everything you desire. If you did, what would there be to look forward to? Be thankful when you don't know something, for it gives you the opportunity to learn. Be thankful for the difficult times. During those times you grow. Be thankful for your limitations, because they give you opportunities for improvement. Be thankful for each new challenge, because it will build your strength and character. Be thankful for your mistakes. They will teach you valuable lessons. Be thankful when you're tired and weary, because it means you've made a difference. It's easy to be thankful for the good things. A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks. Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive. Find a way to be thankful for your troubles, and they can become your blessings.
