1 g\w\azf aéäxåuxü ECDI CLIFTON FORGE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 544 Church St., Clifton Forge, VA # www. Cliftonforgepresbyterianchurch.com cfpc@ntelos.net From the PASTOR ************************************************************************************************************************ THE BLESSING OF THE BREAD Bread is a physical symbol of God s goodness to all creatures of the world. Bread fills our stomachs and gives us strength to go about our daily work. We ask for daily bread in the Lord s Prayer and we are reminded that the bread refers to all our physical needs. Daily bread is a gracious gift from God and we are to receive these gifts with thanksgiving. The lack of bread can lead us to temptation and sin, causing us to be jealous, discontent and unhappy. When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, he said, Turn these stones into bread, if you are truly the Son of God. Although Jesus had been without food for forty days, he responded, Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word which proceeds out of the mouth of God. Jesus reminds us as he speaks to the crowds gathered around him and to the disciples, the bread that God gives is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. I am the bread of Life. He who comes to me will never be hungry I am the living bread that comes down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread he will live forever. Thus bread is a spiritual symbol of Jesus, who feeds us with the Word, providing us with nourishment of our souls and strength to live Christian lives as children of the heavenly Father. On Thanksgiving, as we remember all of God s blessings to us, let us also give thanks for Christ, the Bread of Life. With these loaves of bread, lets us extend our worship and out thanksgiving into our homes as we sit around the family table. As we share the bread, let is be a sign and symbol of bounty, love, compassion and thanks. That this bread may be blessed for this purpose as we pray: O God, give us bread. Give us bread to nourish our bodies and in Christ, give us the bread of eternal life that we may grow, strengthen and serve. Bless this bread and as we share its nourishment around our tables, may it remind us of your constant care and the bond of friendship that exists among us. We pray this in the name of Christ, the Bread of Life from heaven. Amen. Yours in Christ, Pastor Paul November 2016

Jude 21 The Bible is a revelation of the fact that God is love. Many people misunderstand the attribute of God s nature which is love. God is love does not mean that everything is sweet, beautiful, and happy, and that God s love could not possibly allow punishment for sin. When we preach justice, it is justice tempered with love. When we preach righteousness, it is righteousness founded on love. When we preach atonement, it is atonement planned by love, provided by love, given by love, finished by love, necessitated because of love. When we preach the resurrection of Christ, we are preaching the miracle of love. When we preach the return of Christ, we are preaching the fulfillment of love. No matter what sin you have committed, or how terrible, dirty, or shameful it may be, God loves you. This love of God is immeasurable, unmistakable, and unending! Sympathy Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Russell Benjamin Smith, IV family, rest in peace. 16 FUNNY THINGS KIDS SAY A little boy was in a relative's wedding. As he was coming down the aisle he would take two steps, stop, and turn to the crowd (alternating between bride's side and groom's side). While facing the crowd, he would put his hands up like claws and roar. So it went, step, step, ROAR, step, step, ROAR, all the way down the aisle. As you can imagine, the crowd was near tears from laughing so hard by the time he reached the pulpit. The little boy, however, was getting more and more distressed from all the laughing, and was also near tears by the time he reached the pulpit. When asked what he was doing, the child sniffed and said, "I was being the Ring Bear." Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church 544 Church Street Clifton Forge VA TIDINGS TO
