Morning Men s Prayer Hardee s Deadline for August Tidings information is July 25, From the PASTOR Formula of Remembrance Psalm 42: Luke 1:46-56 When a person is lost, it is usually because they have forgotten the way. By the process of remembering they trace their steps back to a more familiar place. In lament, this process is called the formula of remembrance. In Psalms 42:4, the psalmist interrupts his lament with these words: Theses things I remember. In 68:7-18 we read a long remembrance of God s awesome presence among his people. Psalm 74 begins in despair, Why have you rejected us forever, O God? but is verse 12 a remembrance begins that speaks of God s power of old. He split open the sea (verse 13) and crushed the heads of Leviathan (verse 14). Surely now, the psalmist hopes God will rise up and defend you cause (verse 22). Psalm 78, though not a lament, contains a long section looking back on the deeds of God (verses 5-72). Perhaps most interesting is psalm 136, which contains a long remembrance passage punctuated with communal shouts of hesed! (see also Psalms 106; 22:27; 25:5; 40:11; 51:1; 69:16; 79:8; 103:4; 1Chronicles 16:4). These passages revel that remembering is also worship. Remembering can be a powerful path to worship in the mist of disappointment and pain. To look back on those times when God was faithful gives us hope, when in the present sometimes he seems to have hidden his Presence and forgotten is hesed. Lament teaches us that the central question of worship is, What is God worth? the formula of remembrance encourages us to ask, What has God done in my life that s worth remembering?

2 In the first chapter of Luke, when Mary first hears she will give birth to the Messiah, she sings a song that includes a formula of remembrances. Linked to the idea that Shaddai has done mighty things in her, Mary recalls other mighty acts of God in the past starting with verse 47. Later Zechariah will use the same formula in his song (Luke 1:67-79). It is unfortunate that it is referred to as a formula, for there are really no formulae in lament. There are, however, forms and perhaps we would do better to understand remembrance more in these terms. Outside of these references, the uses of the formula of remembrance in the Old Testament are found almost exclusively in the psalms of lament. Reflect 1. What s the benefit of remembering the past, when it s not going to change the future? 2. How does remembrance fit into lament? For the month of May we served 397 families and 1,368 individuals; without your help this wouldn t have been possible. We are still collecting food items here at the Church.
