God continuously turns our understandings about him, faith, purpose for life, holiness, ourselves, and our relationship to the world on its ear. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus is completely reorienting the disciples to a new way of believing and behaving. I can only imagine how disoriented they must have felt as they listened to him that day realizing that in their choice to become his disciples they may have gotten in way over their heads. I often feel that way as I allow both the written and living word of God to challenge me on what I believe. If we allow it; the Christmas story can challenge our conventional ways of thinking on so many levels. I am inviting you to join me in allowing Christmas to turn us inside-out on what we think about Power, God s Presence, Passion, and the Proclaimers. As we allow God to turn us inside-out he just may be able to transform our days and lives into something totally amazing as he did for so many in the Christmas story many, many years ago. 3 The Christmas season has arrived and the children at preschool are excited and busy with many activities in the Spirit of Christmas. The 3 s Christmas party will be on Thursday, December 13 at 10:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall followed by their Christmas program in the Sanctuary at 11:45 a.m. On Friday, December 7, the 4 s will have their Christmas program in the Sanctuary at 7:00 p.m. The 4 s Christmas Party will be Wednesday, Dec. 12th at 9 a.m. The 4 s have scheduled their Breakfast with Santa for Wednesday, December 12 at 9:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. They will also visit the Nursing Home to sing for the residents on Friday, December 7. The children will be giving to the Local Food Bank from the non-perishable food donations brought to their Christmas programs. We would like to thank our Veterans Merlin Thompson and Dale Profitt for visiting the preschool and teaching the children about being a veteran. We certainly appreciate their service to our country! Sun, December 16, Cantata Snow Date Wed, December 19, NO Sanctuary Choir Wed, December 26, NO Sanctuary Choir The Mercy Manger - Cantata Presentation Mercy has been defined as: compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone who it is within one s power to punish or harm. This is exactly what we have seen from our heavenly father. It was His right and within His power to punish us. But He didn t choose punishment, He chose mercy. And so, on a quiet evening, two millennia ago, outside the hills of Judea, there was a supernatural unveiling. God, the Son came to us and the mundane was confronted by the miraculous, a child in the manger. From the foundations of the earth, He planned mercy. The Sanctuary Choir and Friends will present he cantata on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2018, at 4:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. The Family Christmas meal will follow the cantata at 5:00 pm. Via & Family Christmas Post Office This year our youth will be manning the Christmas Post Office. For those not familiar with what this is If you would like to send Christmas cards to fellow church members/ attendees, you can use the Christmas Post Office here at church instead of the United States Postal Service. Just fix your cards with the names of the recipients on the front of the envelope and place your cards in the appropriate letter cubicle in the post office located in the hall across from the Cheerful Helpers Sunday School Class. On the Sunday mornings in December, our youth will deliver these cards to the appropriate Sunday School Classes or to folks in the sanctuary before the worship service begins. As is the custom, if you would like to make a donation for the postage, there will be a container for that on the table. Donations will be used by the youth for the Operation Christmas Child/ Samaritan s Purse project for The Children's Dept., grades 1-7, will be having a Christmas Party during Sunday School on Sunday, December 9. There will be lots of fun, games and food!!! The children that would like to participate in a gift exchange game are asked to bring a small wrapped gift (around $5 in cost) appropriate for a young boy or girl. We'll have extra gifts on hand so everyone can join in the fun. Invite your friends! Page 4

7 INFORMER Food Drive Please help us with our collection of food items for the local food bank The theme for December is: Canned Soups Please drop off your donations by December 31 in the box outside the Fellowship Hall In October, 29 items were collected. Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box Ministry It is with awe and thanksgiving that I can report to you that there were 1,079 boxes collected for OCC. Our church gave 175 boxes. 155 were prepared by the youth and the remaining 20 were individual church members. Thanks so much to all who volunteered and helped in any way. Special thanks to Faith and Winky and the Youth who shopped and packed boxes themselves. What a blessing to be involved with such a Mission-Minded church. Thank you again! Judy Britt Christmas Food Boxes & Fruit Baskets Decorated boxes are in the halls for your non-perishable food donations for the annual food boxes. The list is posted by the pastor s study for the names of the food box / fruit basket recipients. Deadline to sign up recipients and the deadline to drop off food items is Thursday, December 14. Food boxes / Fruit Baskets will be available for pick up on Sunday, December 16 after worship service. Please leave a contact # for the person signing up for a basket. (Don t forget, if you submit a name please be prepared to deliver the baskets/boxes during the week before Christmas.) Any questions, please contact Dirk Davis. Lottie Moon Christmas Offering You have...heard about this hope in the message of truth, the gospel that has come to you. 8 In December: NO Church Council Meeting NO Deacons Meeting INFORMER deadline for the January issue is Sunday, December 16 On the following Wednesdays: December 19, December 26, and January 2 the following activities are cancelled due to the Christmas and New Year Holidays: Family Meal, TeamKid, Adult Bible Studies, and Youth Bible Study. These activities will resume on Wednesday, January 9, Church Office will be closed December 24, 25, 26 & January 1. Christmas Poinsettias for the SANCTUARY As in past years you are invited to bring poinsettias for those we wish to Honor or In Memory of loved ones this Christmas season. We request that you bring your poinsettias by Sunday morning, December 9, so they can decorate the Sanctuary for the Christmas Cantata that afternoon. Please remember to attach card with name and Donated by. Poinsettias may be picked up anytime after the Christmas Eve Service on December 24. If anyone needs assistance, please contact: Flower Committee: Mary Gardner, chairwoman, Elizabeth Reynolds and Janice Yearout-Patton Local Missions: Quilters The Christian Women of Floyd County will be meeting on Fridays from 9:30am-2:00 pm October through March in the Fellowship Hall to tack quilts for the needy. Please join us in this special ministry. Quilters will not meet on the following Fridays, December 14, 21 & December 28 Wednesday Night Family Meals 5:45 pm, Fellowship Hall This is not a pot luck so pick up your family on the way home from work and come over to enjoy a simple meal and lots of good fellowship. If you would like, you are welcome to stay for the after-dinner Wednesday evening activities: Team Kid 6:30 pm Youth 6:45 pm Team Kid Adult Bible Study 6:45 pm Pastor s Bible Study 7:00 pm. Child care is available for any children too young for TeamKid and during Adult Bible Studies and Choir. 9 It s cold outside, time to stay indoors for good food and good fellowship! In January, February, and March 2019, the Young at Heart will enjoy lunch and bingo at 11:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall on the second Monday of the month: January 14, February 11, March 11. Please bring 2 pieces of fruit to be used as prizes for bingo. If you have any questions about the above activities or Young at Heart, please contact Kathryn West at Floyd Baptist Church expresses sympathy to its members and their families on the recent loss of a family member: Robert & Judy Britt on the loss of Robert s brother, David Britt. Family of Bernard Moran, who recently passed away. Family of Tammy Keith, who recently passed away. The Deacon Board moves to amend the by-laws by striking from the Deacon service requirement: the required time to be off in between terms of service. The Christian Women of Floyd County tack quilts for the needy. This special ministry has been an active organization of women in the county for many years, meeting at Floyd Baptist Church. The quilting year begins in October and ends in April. The year October 2017 to April 2018 produced 37 quilts. These ladies with a heart for this mission, donate beautiful quilts to families in Floyd County that had lost their home and belongings to fire, flood, etc., as well as to Christmas for children, the Women s Resource Center in Radford and the Rescue Mission in Roanoke. The ladies from the community include: Martha Bower, Cynthia Womack, Jane Shank, Pat Cox, Irene Gallimore, Virgie Quesenberry, June Bent, Ruby Moran, Helen Roberson, Brenda Weeks, Sandra Shank and Ruth Thompson. Ruth Thompson adds beauty in the finish of the quilts by hemming all the quilts. Starting in 2015 Jane Shank and Ruth Thompson have donated quilt tops and backs ready for tacking. This local mission has benefited so many and we are always amazed how grateful so many have been for a small effort. If you would like to be a part of this mission, please join us each Friday, 9:30am-2:00pm in the Fellowship Hall. We give God the glory. Page 9
