I learned that many Pythians do not have a clue as to the history and purpose of our fraternal organization. I went to pay my respects at a Shiva call. My friend s mother passed away. She and her husband are members of the Marathon Jewish Center, which was the site of our former castle hall. During the course of my visit, one of the Temple members came into the house, saw me, and then castigated our Lodge out of complete ignorance. He was upset that we left our old castle hall in the synagogue. He said how can a Jewish organization leave a synagogue and meet in a church. He said that he would quit being a Pythian, but that he wants his grave. He kept screaming loudly that we should be ashamed of ourselves. I kept my cool and said that we are a democratic nonsectarian organization and where we meet is always determined by vote of the members. In reply, he said I was completely wrong and that I have no idea what I am talking about. I did not answer or confront him because a Shiva call was not the time or place to have a disagreement. I found it very sad that this man who said that he had been a Pythian for over 40 years had no understanding about the Order. What was worse was that his mind was closed. He had no idea that the Knights was formed as a brotherhood that all men could join no matter their race, creed or religion. He did not understand that its main purpose is to help others and yes, a place where we can have a little fun and camaraderie. I am pretty sure that he probably has not attended a lodge meeting in many years and that he sees it merely as a vehicle for getting a free plot. As we begin again, we should each remember the purpose of our Lodge. When we search for new members, we have to really talk to them. Yes, there are the graves, but there is so much more. We have to emphasize that our Lodge is dedicated to giving back to the community. We dedicate a large part of our budget for the single purpose of helping others. We try to make sure those in our armed services are not forgotten. We sponsor teams for young children, so that they learn what true sportsmanship is all about. We give to organizations trying to cure various diseases in the hope that future generations will not have to suffer. We give scholarships to the children of our members to make paying for college a little easier. I do not know how my other brothers feel, but it makes me feel good. In addition, I would only want to be part of a group that accepts everyone as a member. We look at one s character in determining whether one should be a Pythian. That is the only thing that should concern us. It is what is in a person s heart that makes me want to call him a brother. As we start to meet again, let us rededicate ourselves as Pythians. Where we meet or where we come from is far less important than what we do to help others. Fraternally, PC Arthur Getzel THE PICNIC Nine years ago, a few Brothers decided that we should have a picnic. Who knew that it would turn out to be such a great idea? So far, we are batting None of the picnics were canceled on account of rain and everyone who attended had a wonderful time. So, here we are once more, about to spend the first Sunday after Labor Day enjoying each other s company, the great outdoors, food and drink. Again, all you have to bring (and it s optional) is a beach chair. On Sunday, September 7, 2014, we will be serving hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad, cole slaw, pickles, chips, dessert and fun at Cunningham Park. We are right next to a playground which the young ones can enjoy and fields for playing ball. Thank you, Itzy, for making the arrangements for securing the site for the picnic. Thank you, in advance, Arie and Jerry, for preparing the food. We are fortunate that the picnic will be located in the same place as it has been held the last few years in the Park at 193rd Street off Union Turnpike. Just take Francis Lewis Boulevard south from Union Turnpike, make a right turn at the first entrance, and continue to the end. Unless you have an audience with the Queen of England that day, you really could not have anything better to do, so BE THERE!!!

THE EdITor SPEaKS The three articles printed under the heading Nostalgia Corner all touch upon the same theme: stopping the decline in membership. Yet, here we are, 25 years later, and nothing has changed. We still have meetings, we still lament the difficulty in getting new members, and, fortunately, we still have a lot of fun. Let s face it, we don t have much of a clue about getting people to join our wonderful Order; but we sure do know how to have a good time. For more than 35 years I have been going to Lodge meetings. You might ask, why? Possible responses are: On Tuesday nights my wife s boy friend comes over and I have to be out of the house; I just love the coffee and cake and can t get it anywhere else; I am so sick of reality TV shows; I want to avoid having to do the dishes. Actually, all of those answers would be correct. However, the most important reason why I go to lodge conventions is that I enjoy myself there. So what do we do? We debate the hot topics of the day, such as: How much of a subsidy should we give for the Grand Chancellor s Dinner? Should we serve Italian or Chinese food at the open meeting? Should we have a bingo night? I just can t get enough of it. Of course, we also do some mundane things, such as, catching up on what s happening in each other s lives, engaging in lively debates on the topics of the day, and thrilling each other with stories about and pictures of our children and grandchildren. If anyone has a plumbing, legal or car problem, someone is sure to have a solution. We sit around and talk, take out the cards, pour the coffee, scoop up a piece of cake, and smile at each other. That s it. If you want to give it a try, BE THERE!!! PaSSoVEr WINE For 37 years I have been a member of North Shore Lodge or one of its predecessor lodges (Douglaston Lodge and Douglaston Great Neck Lodge). So I know for sure that for at least 37 years the Lodge has given out Passover wine each year. Happily, the tradition continues. And it was better than ever last April, because we had an upgrade in the quality of our wine. Thank you PACDGC David Goldstein for supplementing the cost of the wine and allowing us to bring an even better taste to our lips at Passover. YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE!!! grand lodge CorNEr The annual Grand Lodge Convention was held from June 30th through July 3rd at the Villa Roma. GT Robert Banks, PDGC Tony and Carmen Banks and PACDGC Sir Ron and Arleen Degen had a great time. Our new Grand Chancellor is Sir Robert Ross of Majestic Lodge and our newly elected Grand Outer Guard is David Stanger of Genesis Lodge. I cannot remember a better Grand Chancellor s Dinner than this year s Dinner in honor of PGC Erwin Grill. It was held at Temple Avodah in Oceanside, New York. Just when we thought it could not get any better, we had a Viennese Table without the table. Waiters and waitresses came to the tables with dessert after dessert in a display rarely seen. If you want to learn how great it is, just come to this year s Grand Chancellor s Dinner for dancing, fun and a culinary extravaganza. The Humanitarian Fund had its annual brunch at Temple Avodah. For the second year in a row, there was no waiting on line for a fantastic spread of breakfast and lunch delights. The reason is that the food is waiting and everyone can start eating as soon as they walk in. If you want to see what we mean, just come to this year s Brunch on May 30, CHICKEN dinner Some things just don t change and sometimes that is good. Once again, we are having our annual Chicken Dinner and Turkey Raffle in November. Please leave the evening of November 18th free, so that you won t miss the fun. Dinner will be served at 7:30 P.M. and the great time will last all evening. Naturally, a brief meeting and a poker game will follow. Last year the winners of the turkey raffle were PC Sidney Weber, GT Robert Banks and PACDGC Sir Ron Degen. The biggest losers were the chickens, who would have preferred it if we served turkeys. BE THERE!!! North Shore lodge #824, Knights of Pythias 2 PaUl TESSENHolTZ One of our regular attendees was Paul Tessenholtz. He came to most meetings, stayed for the card games, and was a happy guy. He enjoyed his four grandchildren, two of whom (Zoe and Joseph Assa) were born on March 19, 2014, and was thrilled with the expected arrival of another set of twins later this year. At the June 17th meeting he was pleased to tell us that he had won the Diabetes Research Foundation lottery a few days earlier and that the check already had arrived. He looked great. It came as a shock to learn that just a few days later on June 21st he died from a heart attack at the age of 65. We will miss Paul and extend our condolences to his wife (Linda), daughters (Shana and Melissa), parents (Herman and Florence) and 4 grandchildren who made him glow with pride and joy. INSTallaTIoN of officers On June 17th the Lodge had its annual meeting for the installation of officers. It was an open meeting. Much to everyone s delight, Chef Arie Bauer served a potpourri of delicious delights, followed by scrumptious dessert. The installation ceremony was short and the conversation was great. It was a fun and relaxing evening. We were happy to see Anita Kleiman come down to join us. CoNgraTUlaTIoNS gt robert BaNKS Robert Banks is the second member of North Shore Lodge to serve on the Grand Council. He was elected for the second time to the position of Grand Treasurer at this year s Grand Lodge Convention. Congratulations Robert! NEW MEMBErS On June 3rd Esquire Goodfellowship Lodge held a 3-in-1 rank at its Castle Hall in Brooklyn. PC Sidney Weber took 2 neophytes to the ranks. Congratulations and welcome to our newest Brothers, Marc Ellis and Michael Civitano! We hope to see you at our meetings and functions. PlEaSE PaTroNIZE our advertisers We are grateful to our advertisers for using the Knight Light to reach consumers. North Shore Lodge, in turn, asks you to patronize them. It is the only way to say thank you. deputy VISITaTIoN On October 7, 2014, DGC Michael Kerner will be visiting our Castle Hall to deliver the Grand Chancellor s Message. I have heard the Message. It is not long, but it is interesting and worthwhile hearing. We hope that we will have good attendance to show our appreciation to our Deputy, who is not even from our District, but who is still willing to serve. BE THERE! CaSTlE Hall The Harvest Mission Center where we hold our Conventions posted a For Sale sign on the premises. PC Sidney Weber contacted the Center and learned that they want $3,000,000 for the property and that we can meet in their new quarters, once they are built. The Lodge decided that $3,000,000 was slightly out of range of our budget, so we are passing on purchasing the place. If anyone has suggestions about where we can hold our meetings, please let us know. SICKNESS and distress Michael Rosenkrantz is recuperating from a stroke. It has been a long haul for him. He would love to hear from his Brothers at Janet Linden, widow of PC Barney Linden and mother-inlaw of MA Rod Birnbaum, is suffering from stage 4 cancer. Brother Fred Wayne has been in and out of the hospital with heart problems. We are praying for them.

3 North Shore lodge #824, Knights of Pythias PC BarrY lisak, IrS ENrollEd agent dinners are STIll FUN 10 Ways to Tap Your Ira Early Without Penalty Many IRA owners are aware they can be hit hard with penalty fees if they withdraw money early. You should make every effort to avoid taking money out of your retirement accounts early, especially if you are young. By withdrawing money, you are losing decades of tax-free compounding which can cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars by the time you retire. However, here are some ways to avoid that penalty on early distributions: 1. Permanent disability of Ira owner. Money can be withdrawn without penalty in the event the IRA holder becomes permanently disabled. 2. death of Ira owner. If you die before you re 59.5 years old, your estate and beneficiaries won t be hit the 10-percent penalty. 3. First home purchase. Once in a lifetime, you can take a penalty-free IRA distribution of up to $10,000 ($20,000 for couples) to buy or build the first home of your or your spouse s child, grandchild or parent. 4. Withdrawals used to help pay non-reimbursed medical expenses. In the event of serious illness or injury, Uncle Sam will waive the early withdrawal fee on the condition that the expenses are in excess of 10-percent of your adjusted gross income. 5. Higher education costs. Higher education costs for you, your spouse, children or grandchildren can be withdrawn penalty-free. Spending the money on tuition, fees, and books will get you a penalty exemption. Room and board also count if the individual attending college is at least a half-time student. Qualifying institutions include colleges, universities, and vocational schools eligible to participate in federal student aid programs. 6. IrS tax levy. Money taken from an IRA and used to pay back taxes will not be penalized. Note the exception does not apply if you voluntarily withdraw the amount from your IRA to pay the taxes in order to avoid the levy. 7. Withdrawals used to pay medical insurance premiums. Out of a job? You won t be penalized for using retirement money to pay your medical insurance premiums as long as you have been on unemployment for longer than twelve consecutive weeks. 8. Ira owner turns Once you have reached the qualifying age of 59.5, you can make penalty-free regular withdrawals upon which to live. 9. Set up an annuity. You can set up a series of annuity payments from your IRA without incurring the early withdrawal penalty. You must use an IRS-approved distribution method and take at least one withdrawal annually to avoid the penalty. The payments are based on life expectancies; and generally require professional assistance to calculate. 10. Withdraw from a roth Ira. If you have a Roth IRA that is at least five years old, you may be able to withdraw your contributions, but not earnings, without incurring an early withdrawal penalty. Even though amounts distributed for the above reasons are excused from the early-distribution penalty, they may still be subject to Federal and state tax. To claim the early-distribution penalty exception, you may be required to file IRS Form 5329 along with your tax return, unless your IRA custodian reports the amount as being exempted on IRS Form 1099-R. grand lodge WEBSITE If you want to learn a little more about Grand Lodge and see pictures of the Grand Council, including our own Robert Banks, Grand Treasurer of the Domain of New York, just go to are aces HIgHEr THaN KINgS? If you can answer that question, then you know all that you need to know to have a great time at our post-meeting poker games. It s high end bantering and low stakes poker that make for a great cap to our meetings. In case you get hungry, coffee and cake usually remain until the end of the evening. I never played poker until I played with my Brothers and yet I can hold my own. So if you want some inexpensive fun, BE THERE!!! Years ago Douglaston Lodge filled 2 or 3 tables at each Deputy Dinner and no one went home hungry or less than thrilled with the wonderful camaraderie that we shared. While the numbers have gone done, the fun remains constant. This year s dinner was a Man of the Year Awards Night for PDGC Henry Gutterman of Knickerbocker Lodge. It was held on May 20th at the Holiday Inn near LaGuardia Airport. The food was not as good as you will find at Temple Avodah, but a good time was had by all. Next year, BE THERE! BENEFITS of douglaston WElFarE association All North Shore Brothers who are former members of Douglaston Lodge and all Brothers who joined Douglaston Great Neck Lodge or North Shore Lodge and did not sign a waiver automatically became members of the Douglaston Welfare Association. While all Brothers of North Shore Lodge enjoy benefits from attending great meetings to enjoying wonderful collations to receiving subsidies for many dinners and other events to making great friends, the members of the Welfare Association get even more. Each Jewish Brother is entitled to a grave for himself and his spouse. In lieu of plots, non-jewish members receive a cash payment. In addition, upon the death of a Brother his family receives a payment of $300 and upon the death of a spouse of a Brother, he receives $100. Any Brother in the hospital for more than 3 days is entitled to receive $8 per day for each additional day he is in the hospital for a maximum of 30 days annually. BUdgET and PlaNNINg MEETINg On Tuesday, August 19, 2014, at 8:00 P.M., at Sinai Chapels, we held our Annual Budget and Planning Meeting. It was well-attended and extremely productive. Tentative plans were made for the upcoming Pythian Year and a budget was put in place. Please come to our first meeting in September to learn the plans and the money situation for Nothing is written in stone, so your input could change our agenda. But to have any say so, you must BE THERE!!! autumn, MY FaVorITE TIME By Jesse levine Autumn, my most favorite time of the year, Nip in the air, one can almost hear The rustle of leaves as they shake on a limb, A musical sound created by wind, Changing colors that must please your eye, Nature s beauty causing me to sigh. Walk on a path, leaves fluttering down, Creating a scene of stillness, no sound. Gazing and thinking of summers past, Of warm soft breezes, that I hoped would last. But the time then comes, almost unseen, When the seasons change, each a new scene. Soon winter s frost all covered with white, Brings the happy sound of snow s delight. But the time of the year that I like best, Autumn and colors, that excite and yet rest.

In the February 1989 issue of the Knight Light, Harold Saldinger, Ike Roffman and Ira Lugener contributed the following articles: CHaNCEllor CoMMaNdEr'S MESSagE Fellow Pyths, We finally made it! The attendance at our 25 year pin gala was astronomical. I had to go past my fingers and to my toes for a count. Past that and I would have had a bone to pick before getting back to my fingers. Twelve pins were given out, and there are many more due. We may have another meeting of this sort in order to bring out the older, old timers. Most of the attendees signed up for our January 17 dinner meeting, which is the only way to get it. There are a few dinners coming up this spring in our District. They will be at the same Jamaica Estates Temple as last year. The food and drink were excellent, and our lodge subsidized forty per cent of the tab for participants at our table. Perhaps we can get two or three tables this time. At our next executive board meeting I am going to suggest a one hundred per cent subsidy for both dinners. What is money for if not to spend for good times, right Ira? Our February 7 meeting is an open meeting where our female guests will receive their Valentine gifts. Come on down and beat Great Neck's female attendance. So far it's been ten to one against us. Show up even if it is in drag. You'll get a gift! Fraternally, HAROLD SALDINGER P.S. If only twenty to twenty-five Dougies come to a free dinner, then something must be wrong. I say a few more activities and give-a-ways may get some members to our soirees. I still say a free weekend a year, in the Catskills, may entice us, plus a few hibernates. Let's try it. IT SEEMS To ME by Senator Ike roffman At a recent Lodge meeting we were honored with the unexpected appearance of our Grand Chancellor, Aaron Rothenberg, who spoke on several topics of concern to the Pythian Order. One point he made, I found especially interesting because it seemed to me to be applicable to Douglaston Lodge. The membership in our Pythian Lodges is getting older and with very few new members joining, a fiscal crisis looms ahead for the following reason: After being a member for 50 years a Brother automatically becomes a Life Member and does not pay dues! Douglaston Lodge was formed 34 years ago, with a charter membership of over a hundred, and more than quadrupled its membership within 15 years. After that there was a steady decline in new applicants and in the past ten years we have initiated very few new members. You don't have to be a mathematician to figure out what's going to happen in about 20 years if this decline in new membership continues. Douglaston Lodge will have about the same number of Life Members as dues paying members! Of course, one solution would be to require a Brother to be a member for 60 years instead of 50 to qualify for Life Membership, but that would be only a stop-gap measure just postponing the inevitable. It seems to me there is only one practical solution: We must get new members into our Lodge. If you have any ideas how to go about it, please get in touch with our Membership Committee Chairman, PC Ronnie Degen. I racked my brains the other month, and haven't recovered as yet! North Shore lodge #824, Knights of Pythias 6 NoSTalgIa CorNEr Aside to the Editor: I take the Fifth as to whether I often write with tongue-in-cheek. But I plead guilty to always writing with pen-in-hand (except when I use a pencil). To My Brothers: Everybody wants something for nothing! Douglaston Lodge recognizes the validity of this premise, as shown by all of its promotions, such as, free dinners, subsidized dinners, Passover wine, 25 year pins, Hy Jaye awards and life membership. Obviously, the problem is that we aren't giving away what people want. If we were, our attendance and membership would be soaring. The answer is KNIGHTO. Yes, the Pythian answer to Lotto is KNIGHTO. We all know that people stand in line for up to an hour just to spend a few dollars to purchase a lottery ticket, although the odds of winning are millions to one. We should have our own incentive system. The prizes would be smaller, but the odds of winning would be fantastic. For example, anyone who brings in a new brother would get $20 off of his next year's dues. Bring in 5 brothers and don't pay dues for three years. At each meeting we should have a raffle at no charge. The prize: no dues for a year. You might wonder, why is Ira suddenly giving away the money? Aha, I thought you would ask. Easy, this isn't a giveaway like a dinner which brings a few people down to one meeting. This is an investment in our future. Are you listening King Hal? Fraternally BINgo NIgHT IRA S. LUGENER SErVICEMEN and VETEraNS CoMMITTEE Has anyone ever asked you what does the Knights of Pythias give back to the community? If so, you could come up with quite a few wonderful answers from raising money for diabetes research, to sending children to camp, to contributing money to hospitals and nursing homes, to raising money for children s hospitals, to sponsoring Special Olympics, to giving out scholarships, to getting its members into facilities. One of our most heartwarming and important endeavors is performed by the Servicemen and Veterans Committee, whose Chairman is PCDGC Sir Joseph Robinson. For years, the Committee has been sending packages to the men and women who are serving our country in Iraq and Afghanistan. The appreciative letters that Joe receives in return make us realize how much good we are doing for these deserving men and women who serve in harm s way. Sadly, the government charges regular postage rates of $14.85 per package. If you would truly like to make a difference, please send a check made payable to the Humanitarian Fund and earmark it for the Servicemen and Veterans Committee. Then mail it to Grand Lodge at 71 South Central Avenue, Valley Stream, New York It will show that you care. Bingo Night has always been a success, so we are trying it again. It will be one of the Lodge s spring delights. Please save the evening of April 21st for a night of fun. It will be right after Passover, so you will be craving for the chips and other non- Passover goodies that we serve. B (LIKE IN BINGO) THERE!!!

7 North Shore lodge #824, Knights of Pythias Ira S. lugener NEW grand lodge offices To My Brothers, The latest rage is going viral. True, it often just means 15 minutes of fame, but that s 14 minutes and 60 seconds more fame than the Knights now enjoy. If we could just do something that is exciting, the internet will do the rest for us. I suggest that we change our name to IHOP the International House of Pythians. It is our future. See, we need name recognition. If we say we are the Knights of Pythias of the Domain of New York, people say, Huh? Who? What? They figure that they haven t heard of us because we re not worth having been heard about. But if we re IHOP, then the same people think that it s their fault for not being up to date on what s happening in the world, for not knowing that IHOP is more than just pancakes. They ll think that we re some big foreign outfit expanding into the United States. They ll want to be in the vanguard of the newest craze. Add a Facebook page, and we ll be in business. They ll be breaking down the doors to become members. If we put the name IHOP out there, we also will attract a lawsuit from the International House of Pancakes for trademark infringement. The worst thing that could happen is that they win a huge judgment against the Knights and wipe us out financially. Well, you have to take some chances in life. Besides, the huge verdict will go viral and attract even more members and it won t have any effect on the Douglaston Welfare Association the holder of my benefits because it s a separate organization.
