3 From the editor This year s scarecrow at the Butley allotments One of our local artisans, Janet Watson of School Lane, is this month s feature. Her linocut prints and hand-bound books make perfect gifts. Some of our local schoolchildren have been busy during their summer holidays helping out as Play Consultants to design a new-look for Hollesley Recreation Ground playground equipment (p.33-34). Watch this space! We have more letters than usual this month covering a variety of issues, some more serious than others. Please respond if you have any comments to make. As the summer draws to a close, there are still plenty of outdoor events to enjoy: Boyton Fete, Ride and Stride and the open air screening of War Horse in aid of the Peninsula2018 Poppy Project. Don t forget Hollesley Players, Hollesley Craft Fair and All Saints WI and Friends concert plus all the other myriad of activities listed in the Diary. Have a great month! 4 Local lives: Janet Watson, Printer/Bookbinder Janet, a local artisan, first became interested in printing and design whilst visiting an end of year exhibition with her daughter at the Norwich School of Art and Design. She decided there and then to make enquries about courses and began by doing a two year Foundation Course, followed by a three year degree course and finally a two year Master s Degree in Fine Art! She enjoyed the experience of being a mature student and discovered a joy in printmaking. So much so that she decided to specialise in the subject and began selling prints, some of which were framed. Cheryl Gray Janet at her Victorian press Janet has always loved the feel of books and a friend who worked at Aldeburgh Bookshop asked if she would design a blank book using a printed design of the bookshop as a cover. Janet duly did so and has continued to supply the shop with other varied designs ever since. They are also sold in Orford Craft Centre, CraftCo in Southwold and Browsers Bookshop, Woodbridge. Janet first started with a small press and graduated to several larger Victorian ones. She started working at her kitchen table in the early days, progressing to her sitting room and finally to the luxury of her studio in School Lane, Hollesley! This studio has its own history, having once been the old Hollesley School s dining room and sports hall in the 1960 s. You may have visited Janet there over the past few years, as she has taken part in the Suffolk Open Studios event which takes place every summer. Visitors are able to have a look behind the scenes and see the artist in action; possibly engaging in conversation and having a chance to look around the studio and see the prints, linocuts and books first hand. 5 When starting a new book, Janet first designs the print for the cover. She tends to work from photos - anything that grabs her attention can be the basis of a design, from local views to details on boats or beach huts. Coastguard Cottages at Shingle St with Union flag catching the breeze Bawdsey Ferry Cheryl Gray Janet explains the process of a lino cut as follows: Cheryl Gray Lino cuts with different colours I begin by tracing what I want from a photo, taking out or adding in details With a lino cut, everything is in reverse, so I turn over the tracing paper and with a piece of carbon paper underneath, trace over it again - this image goes onto the lino ready to be cut I cut into the lino using Swiss carving tools, cutting away what I don t want and am left with the desired image Ink is then rolled onto a glass slab which is transferred to the lino. I may make 3/4 plates using a different colour each time (let the first colour dry and so on). The image is then printed on an 1860 s Victorian platen press on plates to produce different colours. In letterpress printing a platen press is used against a medium (such as a linocut) to cause an impression. The alternative star wheel press with steel roller is used for etchings and collagraphs. Janet s Victorian version is a beauty to behold and is still giving excellent service! Janet in her studio at the Star Wheel press After this time-consuming process, stage one of the book-making procedure is complete - now for the book itself! Cheryl Gray Page 5 September

7 The hand-binding of each book begins with an A2 sheet of art paper which is folded to the desired 8x page size; this is called a signature. A signature refers to a group of sheets, folded in the middle and bound together into the binding. The paper is 140gsm cartridge which will take watercolour or ink. Each book has 8 signatures, 64 pages in total. All are punched with 6 small holes then sewn together on a Victorian sewing frame. They are then glued to strengthen. When dry, they are trimmed and measured for the bookboard cover to be made to measure. The desired print is then glued to the bookboard. The headband (stitched decoration at top and base of spine) and bookmark (piece of ribbon) are added. Finally it goes to the nipping press to be tightly compressed, so Janet can glue and reinforce the spine. This whole process Janet stitching signatures at the sewing frame - may take several days. bookbinding tape is used to add strength to the spine Fewer and fewer people have Janet s patience and skill. Recently, she has had nine of her monoprints published in a book called Suffolk Jewels by Alan Marshall, in which 38 print-makers explore the county. The cover print of Village Voices appeared in Norfolk Gems by the same author. How fortunate we are to have such a gem on our very own doorstep! 8 Church letter One of the key elements of Celtic Spirituality which I have been studying over the last three months is a sense of connection with the natural world around us. There are many aspects of creation that we find strange, scary, even repulsive especially when we are used to being in control and keeping safe. This month s Countryfile magazine promises a feature on Wonder Wasps because: it s time we learned to love the picnic pest. There is beauty all around us so easy to find in this part of the world but also in unexpected situations and places. It might be in a tiny detail of stone, creature or something we ve made ourselves. Sunset at River Deben, Ramsholt There is always beauty in the face of someone we love, and in the stranger too. Cheryl Gray Looking for beauty all around us is a contemplative practice, an exercise in opening our hearts, minds, and bodies to the divine image which some of us call God. In indigenous traditions, such opening practices often take the form of dance, drumming, song, and trance, embodied forms that Western, and particularly European-based, Christianity has neglected. I sometimes hear the comment around this time of year that harvest festivals aren t what they used to be; that offerings of non-perishable foods tins, packets and so on don t have the same impact as a church bursting with fresh flowers, fruit and vegetables. There is surely a place for both a sharing of food and providing for those less fortunate but also a celebration of the goodness and beauty and abundance of the world around us. Come and fill our churches to overflowing this harvest thanksgiving season! Our harvest thanksgiving services (not included in the grid, p.9) are as follows : 23 rd Sept 11am St Mary s Bawdsey 7 th Oct 6.30pm All Saints Hollesley 21 st Oct 11am St Andrew s Boyton I would like to express my appreciation to all who led worship and took on extra responsibilities during my recent 3 month extended study leave. I will be giving a presentation entitled Walking, Wonder and Welcome about my time away studying Celtic spirituality in Hollesley Church at 10am on Saturday 15 th September. Refreshments will be served beforehand; all are invited and all are welcome. Wishing you every blessing, Ruth Hatchett Page 8 September

15 Your letters continued... Dear Editor, I walked to the shop to buy a paper. On my way through the allotments, I was having a chat with Jeff and we looked up and saw two very big black and white birds soaring high in the sky. We were amazed! Later, we learned they were White Storks, occasional visitors to our country. Mick Pattrick Dear Editor, White Stork Contributed Please can I thank the very many kind people of Hollesley, Boyton and beyond who so kindly gave up their time and energy, on a recent hot Wednesday in July to help search for Cleo, a lost little white Cockapoo. That morning, about 7.45am a jogger and his Border Collie suddenly appeared in front of me in the forest. Cleo took fright at the man and his dog and ran off, hotly pursued, as she must have thought, by the jogger and his dog. The man refused to stop. Cleo s owner and I, together with many friends, DogLost and local farmers spent 12 hours that day searching for her. Thankfully, this tale has a happy ending due to the determination of the wonderful people who helped us search and search. Such a shame the selfish actions of one man were the cause of such an horrendous, emotional and exhausting day. Cass Davies Dear Editor, In the April issue of Village Voices I mentioned the 80th Anniversary of the dedication of the bells at All Saints. I also said we would be delighted to hear from anyone who was once a ringer or had a relative who rang at some time. We are particularly keen to learn about those who rang Hollesley bells between 1938 and the 1980s, as we do not have any photos or records of that period. I was subsequently contacted by Bob Copping and after an interesting talk, I asked if he could put pen to paper to ensure I had the correct details. I have attached a copy of his letter (see p.17), and in view of the contents and the names mentioned, thought it would be worth publishing and see whether anyone else s memory might be jogged. On Saturday 8 th September there will be an attempt to ring a full peal on Hollesley bells starting at 10am and finishing by 1pm. This will be rung by a mainly outside band to mark the Silver Wedding anniversary of two well-known Suffolk ringers. I expect the ringing to be of a very high standard. 17 Your letters continued... Dear Peter, Following our telephone conversation, I ve put pen to paper. At 87, memory isn t always be at its best when one is trying to recall the past years as a teenager. But this was the time in the late 1940 s and early 1950 s when Norman Whiting, having been discharged from the RAF and living with his sisters and parents in the council houses at Duck Corner decided to organise and encourage teenagers of the village to take up bellringing after the silence of the bells during the War Years. The following took up the challenge, if my memory is correct: Derek Garrett, Bob Copping, Paul Mace, Rosemary Mudd, Betty Mudd, Iris Wing, Peggy Lennard and Jean McCullum - others may have followed. We rang mostly rounds and simple changes to start with under the guidance of Norman, who was Tower Captain. Rev Groom was very supportive and transported us round in his Landrover especially on New Year s Eve when we always attended the festive dance at the Oak Hill Prison Officers Club. He would ferry us back and forth to the church to ring the Old Year out and the New Year in and return us to the festivities. Miss K. May Lennard, the popular schoolteacher of the day, who was also organist at the church, amongst other positions she held on committees in the village, took the opportunity of recruiting us into the church choir. I recall at Christmas time we toured the village with the handbells which were at the church, for the popular carol singing led by Vera Midleditch and Derek Andrews, who was, I believe, our head chorister. (Yes he was! Ed) Perhaps I have started to stir a few memories of others and they will be able to fill in the blank spaces in the past history of a home village that I always hold dear and of which I have many happy memories. Yours sincerely, Rob (Bob)Copping Thank you so much, Rob, for taking the trouble to write such an interesting letter, full of details of life in Hollesley in the 1940 s-1950 s. Let s hope it rings some bells! 19 Your letters continued... Dear Editor, Re: Twilight 10K run We did it! Thank you to everyone who supported us with donations and words of encouragement. Debbie Pipe Contributed Copy of letter in the public arena re: change in prison population I am writing to inform you of a population change at HMP & YOI Hollesley Bay, which has been authorised at Ministerial level. The change authorises suitably risk assessed category D prisoners convicted of sexual offences, to be held at Hollesley Bay. There will be no change to the overall size of the prison, this change relates to purely widening the range of prisoners eligible for transfer into the establishment. There are now 4,000 more men in prison convicted of sexual offences, than in This includes a growing number of men who present as a low risk and have been assessed as suitable to be held in Category D open prisons.the Prison Service has much experience in holding men convicted of sexual offences in open conditions, both at HMP Leyhill and HMP North Sea Camp. Now, due to the significant increase in this prison population group, two additional open establishments have been identified as being suitable to bring their expertise and rehabilitative culture to bear, in giving these men the best opportunity for resettling in the community, as their custodial sentence ends. A well-controlled, and appropriately monitored and staged, re-introduction to society, is undoubtedly the best way of minimising the risk to the public. Open prisons such as Hollesley Bay accommodate those prisoners who have been re-categorised as suitable for open conditions from within the secure prison estate, and those people who have been through the whole rigour of a Parole Board Assessment, and are recommended for this progressive move. Generally all prisoners at Hollesley Bay will be within two years of their final release date. The safety of the public is always our highest priority. To protect the public and prevent future victims, it is important that individual offenders are managed according to their individual risk. The ability to test prisoners in open conditions, as they approach the end of their sentence is a critical step in their successful reintegration into society. If you have any questions about the change, please do not hesitate to contact me. D Moore, Governor There will be a Public Meeting at Hollesley VH to discuss this issue. Date and time will be issued through Hollesley Grapevine and Boyton Information team Page 19 September 2018

20 Big tooth Geologists tell us that the North Sea comes and goes roughly every one hundred thousand years or so. The present sea made us an island, and was born about ten thousand years ago at the close of the last glaciation. A far older sea lapped the shores of east Suffolk perhaps three million years ago. Raised into the sunlight by earth movements, its ancient seabed is visible in pits and cliffs in many local places, and we call it Red Crag. Roger Underhill walks his dog Amber very Shark tooth found by Roger often on the beach at East Lane, Bawdsey, and he regularly finds fossils that have washed out of the Red Crag and London Clay in the cliff. That ancient seabed teemed with life, and the evidence is embedded as shells and bones in the orange-red layers of the cliff. He often finds shark teeth, which are all you are likely to find of sharks, because their skeletons are made of soft cartilage that doesn t fossilise. Their teeth however last almost forever. One day in June, Roger found a shark tooth that by its size might have belonged to the shark of all sharks: Carcharochles megalodon. Full-grown, this fish could reach fifty feet in length and weigh ten tonnes. It was the top predator in the Red Crag sea, and almost certainly preyed on whales, using lethal force in a highspeed attack from below, much as present-day great white sharks attack sea lions. The name megalodon means big tooth, and those big teeth were up to seven inches long, and serrated. Because experts in the identification of extinct sharks have only teeth to work from, features such as size, shape and serration are important. Roger s ancient tooth is very worn, with no serrated edges left to see, but it looked very different in the jaw of its owner. Laurie Forsyth Laurie Forsyth Page 20 September

21 Tongues not wagging anymore! During the war years, one had to improvise - make do and mend. Make the most of what yer got! Tin kettles regularly sprang rusty holes so you went to the oil/hardware shop and purchased a pot mender, consisting of two washers, a nut and bolt. If you wanted timber to build a chicken hut, you watched out for discarded wood and you saved those rare throw away planks, until you had enough to make just a start. Nails were saved - retracted and straightened and placed in assorted jars. Metal door hinges were unattainable in the shops. So, how you might ask, did we hang our rabbit hutch doors during 1944? Catapults also needed a leather pouch at the end of the two rubber bands to place your missile in. So how did we boys cope during those wartime days of scarcity and fear? With a little boyhood imagination of course! Terry Basson Shoes had leather tongues, they served perfectly for both requirements. Whenever the need arose, I raided our house boot cupboard and without a thought of who owned the shoe or boot. I expertly cut out the leather tongue with my penknife, specially sharpened for the occasion. They somehow looked a little different! My bother had a new pair of shoes which were no older than a week, he was so proud of them. When his little bother returned them to the boot-cupboard box, they somehow looked a little different. I remember watching him put on his new shoes, as he reached for the laces he cried out: Wheres my tongues gone? I could have told him: On my new rabbit hutch doors, acting as hinges. Gutless, I left the room, just never had the stomach to watch anymore the disappointment on his face. Like music that we still enjoy over years past, my childhood memories jog me to laugh at unforgettable moments such as this; so much so that I wanted to share them with you. 23 Hollesley WI This month s WI report includes two meetings, so here goes. For our July meeting our speaker was Marilyn Coates, who told us all about Samaritan s Purse and their Operation Christmas Child which sends shoeboxes of gifts to needy children around the world. Her talk and audio visual presentation focused on a delivery to Macedonia and it was heart-warming to see how much these boxes meant to the local communities. Despite being a Christian organisation which delivers the gifts through local churches, no box contains any religious, political or inappropriate content, and every box is checked before being sent. We saw how much nicer it was if boxes were personalised with a homemade card or picture of the sender or special message, and it was humbling to see how some small thing that a child here wouldn t appreciate was such an exciting thing to have for a child with hardly anything to call their own. Since 1993, 146 million children in 100 countries have received a shoebox, and we were certainly inspired to get busy. Lots of members took away various knitting patterns of gloves, puppets, bags and other gifts to include in a box. Do check out their website if you feel you can help: Last year 12,200 boxes went from the IP postcode! Contributed For our August meeting we enjoyed our annual summer meal, and tucked in to salmon en croute, quiche or ham, with salad, potatoes and coleslaw, and several members made a trifle or lemon meringue pie to round off a delicious meal. Huge thanks to all who helped. Daphne Fox was our first entertainer of the evening with two monologues, followed by our very own Hollesley WI choir and friends who sang two songs for us, including the March of the Women from early 20 th century Suffragete times. Our two visiting trustees were invited to captain teams for a game where they had to arrange themselves to make a given word, holding letter cards. Quite a lot ot milling ensued, but good fun was had by all. We ended the evening with a couple of rounds of Animal, Vegetable, Mineral which is always really enjoyable. 25 Nature note: a little local murder mystery My neighbour, Patrick, called me over the other day to help investigate a murder mystery. He showed me the crime scene, right outside his house, and pointed to the three corpses. No incriminating evidence and everyone had a good alibi, so was it suicide, murder or avicide? Yes, they were three birds, all house sparrows, only recently expired. None of them showed signs of mutilation, so one could rule out sparrow hawks and cats as the suspects. There were no other signs of a violent death either. I fancy it was from natural causes, as we say when we don t really know the answer, maybe a virus of some kind. We shall never know, but it reminded me of a much larger mystery about house sparrows. Sparrows used to be one of our commonest birds. From the earliest historical times they thrived around human habitations in cities and farms, so much so that they were often regarded as a pest. We exported them to the USA in the mid-nineteenth century (a few were released in Brooklyn in 1853) and in no time at all they had spread from coast to coast. And in the early twentie century in Britain there were sparrow clubs devoted to slaughtering them in their thousands as a public service, but they had little effect on the numbers overall. Only 30 years ago they were still as common as sparrows. But something strange has happened. You can search for them in vain in London now. A friend of mine used to birdwatch in Hyde Park every day and in ten years, he never saw a single sparrow! The Cockney sparrow became not only an affectionate symbol for a small, cheeky little bird with a touch of endearing vulgarity, but an endangered species. House Sparrow So whodunnit? Scientists have been trying to figure this out and have considered explanations ranging from climate change, improvements in domestic architecture (so fewer nesting holes), growing predator numbers (like magpies and cats), pesticides and poisons. But none of these has seemed a sufficient cause. The latest theory is that it may be air pollution. The sharp decline in sparrow populations from the 1990s matches exactly the uptake of diesel vehicles in Britain, whose exhaust gases are now known to pose a serious threat to air quality, as any visitor to London can testify. Here in Shingle Street we still have a flourishing colony of house sparrows, I m glad to say, and the air is certainly better in this Street than in Oxford Street. Anyway, our three dead sparrows were buried with due solemnity, remembering the words in Hamlet, There is special providence in the fall of a sparrow. 29 From our country kitchen - cucumber The cucumber plants in my greenhouse have been very prolific this year so I ve been looking for new ways to use them up. Sarah Raven s Garden Cookbook has several good recipes and here are a couple of them I like. Celery and Cucumber Salad in mustard dressing (for 6) 1 cucumber Salt and pepper 1 celery head 1 tbls Dijon mustard 1 tsp English mustard 1 tbls red wine vinegar Juice of 1 lemon 4 tbls sunflower oil Chopped parsley or winter savory Peel and de-seed the cucumber. Slice the halves into 1cm thick half moons, put in a colander and sprinkle with salt. Leave to drain for 30 minutes. Wash and prepare the celery, then slice it into similar sized chunks. Put the mustards in a bowl. Add the vinegar and lemon juice, and then slowly add the oil to make a thick mustard dressing. Pour the dressing over the cucumber and celery, season with salt, pepper and finely chopped herbs. Cucumber Raita (for 4-6) This is perfect to serve with anything spicy as it alleviates the effect of chillies. 1/2 cucumber Salt 200g Greek yoghurt Small bunch of mint, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, finely chopped Small pinch of ground turmeric De-seed the cucumber and chop finely. Mix with the yogurt, mint and garlic. Season with salt and turmeric. Pauline Austerfield Page 29 September 2018

30 Suffolk Heritage Garden - Suffolk Punch Trust This year is proving quite challenging in the garden. First we had endless rain followed by the Beast from the East and now drought! Many of the plants in the garden hail from mid Suffolk, so they struggle in our dry sand. We have been watering any that show signs of stress and hope we can keep them going until the rain comes. The stars of July have been perovskia Blue Spire and the three lavenders, two of them with a pretty cushion-like habit. They just love these conditions. Perovskia Blue Spire and the three lavenders Miggie Wyllie The design of the garden divides it into three rooms, separated by a row of hibiscus near the south end and a holly hedge two thirds of the way down towards the orchard. This summer, the holly is tall enough to stop your eye and grant a glimpse through the centre to the horseshoe bed and clematis. The hibiscus, apart from two casualties that must be replaced, is getting there. I hope that the grass will have turned green by the time you read this! Miggie Wyllie Alderton Parish Council Apart from the fact that this year s fete brought the community together for a fun afternoon Alderton Parish Council are pleased to report that profits of were raised for village amenities. 33 Play consultants project A group of us met to start a big project and become play consultants. Our group is aged between 8 and 11 years. We have been tasked with designing, consulting and getting funds to install new and exciting play equipment in Hollesley recreation ground for all children in our area. Unlike adults, we are experts in using play equipment and so it is great that we can design our own playground. During the first three days, after much effort we agreed a name for the organisation: The Best Play Design Company. We identified all the tasks under the three key headings: Consult, Design and Fund. We Play consultants at Martello Park, Felixstowe looked at government advisory guidance in what is required to develop a perfect playground. Armed with this knowledge we went on a trip to see two recommended play areas in Felixstowe and Ipswich. We tested and scored each piece and then we inspected the whole playground using Play Scotland guidance to help make a judgement. We had to consider over 40 items including the location, accesibility, seating for adults, lighting, litter bins as well as the needs of disabled children. So far, we have chosen the best play equipment examples and are looking at other ideas to meet the requirements for a playground that provides for physical, creative and social play as well as thinking of the environment. We will be putting a brief together for companies to design ideas for us to see. The children who chose to give up their holiday time to become play consultants wrote the following comments about their experiences: Max: My favourite piece of play equipment had a cool slide and was in the Martello Park, Felixstowe. I enjoyed my sausage and chips - I complained: There s too many chips! Hetta: I liked climbing the big Spider s Web and the water feature at Holywells. I enjoyed the scampi and chips at Felixstowe. Tallulah: When we were at Holywells, I cimbed the Spider s Web. I went to the top, I was very fast. It wasn t hard because I had climbed to the top already and I love climbing. Page 33 September 2018 Cheryl Gray

34 Harry: I liked the pirate ship because it looked like good fun and was shady. I liked the table tennis table because if you don t want to go on the equipment, you can play on that. There were not enough bins at the two playparks and there was rubbish everywhere. The old play equipment was uncomfortable and rusty and graffitied. Some play equipment was dangerous and not safe. The things I didn t like were the megaphones which I thought were pointless, and the The play consultants and their post-it notes wide slide. describing the equipment they liked in the catalogues Cheryl Gray Sacha: We went to Felixstowe and Holywells to look at the equipment we would like to have in our park. We had a clipboard with pictures of each piece and we had to give scores of what we would give it out of 10 and how good it was. On the Friday (at the Bowls Club)we went through each photograph of the equipment at Martello Park, Felixstowe, and Holywells Park, Ipswich and wrote down whether we liked it or not. The children worked really hard during their three days on the project. They put forward plenty of ideas and were very thorough in their assessment of suitable equipment for Hollesley. Well done everyone! The group will continue to meet and we would welcome Assessing the different types of play equipment new members to help from various companies. us further the project. 35 Hollesley Parish Council Are you interested in housing in Hollesley? Over the next few months (and possibly years) Hollesley Parish Council will be entangled in many projects involving housing in the village. At this stage the projects are just kicking off so we can't give many details. However, we would urge you and all members of your family to sign up to the Hollesley Grapevine to be in the loop when details are passed on. Wherever we can we will use Village Voices but sometimes very short deadlines are given and so information has to go out on the Grapevine. To sign up, simply send an to Hollesley Parish Council at indicating you would like your address added to the Hollesley Grapevine. We look forward to signing you up! News of further vandalism to the SID On 1 st August, an astute Hollesley resident witnessed a man attempting to vandalise the SID as it sat on the post in Boyton Road. They were quickthinking enough to get a good picture of the man and this has now been circulated by the police. HPC would like to thank this resident and ask that everyone keeps their eyes open to such acts. Welcome to new Councillors At their recent meetings, HPC welcomed two new Councillors: Val Pettitt and Brian Devine. We wish them both a long and happy career in the Council. SCDC Local Plan You may remember in Autumn 2017 HPC advised residents that SCDC was undergoing a review of their Local Plan. This document sets out where development in the district should take place, how special areas should be protected and how employment and tourism should be managed. Following the consultation, the 1st Draft of the Plan to 2036 is now available. The easiest way to view the document is from this link: The news is that all 18 potential sites in Hollesley have been labelled as not suitable for development by SCDC. Although all 18 sites have been marked as unsuitable this does not mean they will never be developed. What it does mean is that SCDC do not consider them suitable at the present moment. The consultation is open until 14 th September. Are you on the Grapevine? The Hollesley Grapevine is an electronic news distribution service for Hollesley residents. To put your address forward just the Parish Clerk (details below). Judi Hallett, Clerk to Hollesley Parish Council: hollesleyparishclerk@gmail.com Page 35 September 2018

37 Wild Villages Enjoying the wildlife in Bawdsey, Alderton, Hollesley and Boyton Great British Beach Clean There s been a lot in the news about marine litter washing up on our coast. Many people have been out doing their bit but it is a bit like painting the Forth Bridge as soon as you finish at one end of a beach, more rubbish will have appeared at the other! As part of the ongoing effort we are organising a litter-pick at Hollesley Marshes to fit in with the Marine Conservation Society s annual Great British Beach Clean. This will be a tripartite event, also involving Suffolk Coast & Heaths AONB team and the RSPB. Gary Lowe A litter-pick at Hollesley Marshes We ll meet at the Hollesley Marshes RSPB Reserve car-park (TM387475) at 10.30am on Monday 17 September. If we re surprised and there is little litter, we ll still have a walk around the area and see if we can find any wildlife. Surgery Closures: Staff Meeting Wednesday 3 September GP Closure PM- Thursday 13 September Dear Editor, We recently had a workman replacing some double glazing units and he was unfortunate enough, whilst removing an old unit, to get a shard of glass embedded in his hand which caused quite severe bleeding. Whilst he would normally have gone directly to A and E the bleeding was so bad that this would have been impossible. I rang the Peninsula Practice in Alderton and they were most helpful, agreeing to see him and treated the injury sufficiently to enable him to make his way to the Ipswich Hospital A&E department for further treatment. I would just like to put on record my thanks to all concerned as I think this is just one instance which showcases the excellent healthcare facilities we have on the peninsula.
