11 B ishop o f Grimsby s L etter D ear Friends, T he violent disturbances in London and oer cities during August raise m any questions. Inevitably our oughts and prayers are wi ose who h ave suffered and lost rough e violence. There can be no excuses for e criminal behaviour of scores of people who subsequently had to take r esponsibility for eir actions b efore e courts. Yet e complexity of e breakdown in law-and- order demands a wiser response at just legislating for longer sentences and more powers for e police. We cannot pretend at such behaviour has been spawned f rom happy, contented and flourishing sections of our society. Nor does it really address e problem by blaming parents or a lack of discipline in schools. The moral vacuum we witnessed in e violence and looting is e vidence of a deeper malaise wiin our society. Difficult and politically unpalatable questions about e quality of our society have to be addressed and, to me, e most urgent issue is at too many wiin our communities sit on e margins of our society feeling at ey don t belong. Gangs and e mob offer a sense of belonging which is too frequently absent for ose who are culturally, socially and economically m arginalised. F eeling at we belong is a fundamental feature of a healy community. T his tru has been recognised from e very earliest human communities. It is an imperative found in e Old Testament prophecies, where belonging means at you have a share in e good ings of creation. The need to belong is central to Jesus healing and pastoral ministry, w here he restores people to community and creates a new platform of b elonging for eir future. Followers of Jesus Christ have to take a lead in creating a sense of belonging for all sections of our communities. Enabling people to know t hat ey belong has to be fundamental to creating communities where e negativity of e violence we witnessed is summer is addressed t hrough e quality of life which all people are offered. There are inevitably political and economic features to belonging, but it starts wiin e ach and every co mmunity. I n Christian terms our neighbours belong because, being made in his image, ey have a God- g iven dignity. Our task is to turn e eology of 'belonging' into a reality wiin e c ommunities in which we worship and witness. T he streng of e 11

12 p arochial system is at we are well placed to give a lead to is agenda i n each and every community. + David Grimsby L ove in a Box Y es, it really is e time of year when we start inking about e above! W e hope you have been saving y our empty shoe boxes ( separate lid from b ox, size 5 approx) so at we can cover em in Christmas paper and fill w i lots of lovely t oiletries, g ifts e tc for children who would oerwise not r eceive anying at Christmas time. A lso, w i all e b argains in e summer sales a t e moment (kids going back to school offers), please ink of our Love in a Box appeal and c onsider donating e BOGOF and 2 for e price of 1 o ffers to us.
