2 Thoughts From Our PIC (Priest in Charge) A New Year for St. George s What s Ahead? Here we are on e doorstep of 2015 what s in store for us at St. George s? Of course, I have no more ability to see e future an anyone else. As we start off into a new year, I d like to reflect some about our congregation and our ministries. It s hard for me to believe, but I have been your Priest in Charge for almost two years now! I st started on February 1, 2013, and is time has flown by. As we approach our Annual Meeting on January 25 (wi one service at 10 a.m.), we have some important ings to consider: Worship Space Our vestry has been considering a rearrangement of our worship space. No decision has been made yet about is, and e vestry would like to involve e congregation in giving feedback about e possible revision of our worship area. At e Annual Meeting, we will have a presentation about is and time for small group reflection. This is an important decision, and e vestry would like input from as many members as possible. Total Ministry Every Sunday, we pray for God s guidance as we live into being a Total Ministry congregation. In 2015, our vestry will continue to meet regularly wi Kay Rohde, e diocesan Mission Developer who is our consultant for Total Ministry. We are exploring how e vestry can function as our Total Ministry Development Team and be a learning community. Some of e central elements of being a Total Ministry congregation are encouraging e ministry of all e baptized, being a church where all learn about e meaning of eir fai, and being a church which is involved in mission wi e larger community around us. We already are doing much in each of ese areas, and we will keep growing in all ese aspects of our ministry. New Member Ministry Over e past year, we have had some grow wi new members at St. George s. This is a good ing! Our goal is not to become a large parish, but instead to be a vibrant small congregation. In order to remain alive and vibrant, we need to bring in new members. Oerwise, we would slowly decline in membership and fade away over a period of years. An essential part of our fai is sharing God s love in Jesus wi e world around us. One of e main ways we can share God s love is inviting oers to join us at worship or fellowship where ey can experience is love, and by warmly welcoming ose who are our guests. Through e initiative of Conrad Cookman and e vestry, we have Newcomer Welcome folders for ose who visit at worship. I hope at we will continue to find ways to invite and welcome new members. I m excited about beginning anoer year wi all of you. I love you all and ank God for is chance to be in ministry wi you. In Jesus love, Faer Ray 1

7 It All Comes Out Even The title and eme of my article is mon comes from a quote attributed to Bat Masterson. Several years ago during one of Sandy and I s road trips we stopped in Dodge City Kansas and did e touristy stuff in e downtown area near Boot Hill. In e museum ey had quite a bit about Bat Masterson and a quote attributed to him shortly before he died intrigued me and I d written in e trip blog at I ought to use it in a sermon or by George article sometime well I guess now is e time. There are many in is old world of ours who hold at ings break about even for all of us. I have observed for example at we all get e same amount of ice. The rich get it in e summertime and e poor get it in e winter. -- Bat Masterson. A while back I preached on e beatitudes and while at Sunday we heard from e Gospel of Matew, which only contains e blessed are you while in Luke s Gospel he includes e Woe to you Luke s version works wi Masterson s idea of how ings break about even e rich getting ice in summer and e poor in winter. Luke tells us Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is e kingdom of God, but Woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. The next beatitude is similar, saying blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied, but woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. I don t ink it is so much at if we have stuff weal, food, nice houses and cars - at we are doomed, having already received our comfort raer a matter of how we see ese ings. Do ey own us or do we own em. Is e attainment of ings more important an ose around us our neighbors? How do we use what God has given us? Or are we mistaken in believing at we ve gotten it on our own? I m reminded of Milton Hershey you may not know his story, but you definitely know his chocolate. He became a self-made millionaire, only completing e 4 grade, and starting two businesses at failed before starting e Lancaster Carmel Company, which he later sold to start e Hershey Chocolate Company. If you ve never visited Hershey Pennsylvania, e home of Hershey Chocolate, en you may not know at it started out as a company town, but unlike oer company towns, Milton wanted e workers to own eir homes so set up a Savings and Loan wi low interest rates so ey could afford to buy em, he also built parks and a civic center wi a eater for e community. He and his wife couldn t have children so he established a school for orphans. Upon his dea his estate, including controlling interest in e Chocolate Company went to e foundation at operates and supports e school. The school is still in operation helping ousands of young people, graduating from e high school includes scholarship support for college, at e time I visited at scholarship was $70, each. From e trust, e school foundation established e Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, a teaching hospital for e state of Pennsylvania, continuing Hershey s legacy of philanropy. Hershey spent e early part of his life wi little and when he did make it he used it to help oers and upon his dea saw to it at his weal went to continue his philanropic work so ings broke even. Amen Deacon Bob 6
