1 Where Are God's Blessings Located? Except ese abide in e ship, ye cannot be saved (Acts 27:31) In 2 Corinians 11:22-25, Paul speaks of e many ings which he has suffered because of his preaching of e gospel. Sometimes even today, preacher will talk about e ings which ey endure in eir line of work. But I am convinced at e ings which preachers might list today as ings ey suffer for Christ if ey were listed in e Bible next to Paul's list here, ey would be very much ashamed for ever speaking up. Paul certainly did suffer much for e cause of Christ. The last statement found ere in verse 25, where Paul mentioned having been shipwrecked ree times and having spent a night and a day in e sea, is especially significant for our lesson is hour. We will be considering Paul's last recoed journey by ship in e Bible, his trip to Rome as a prisoner. It is found in e book of Acts, chapter 27. Earlier in e book of Acts, in chapter 25, Paul had been on trial before e Roman governor whose name was Festus. While he was in at trial he came to understand at his situation was hopeless, at least as far as getting justice in at court. So he made an appeal to be tried before e Emperor himself, Caesar. He could do at because Paul was a citizen of e Roman Empire. Chapter 27 begins wi Paul about to be taken as a prisoner to Rome. In oer to be judged by Caesar, Paul had to be taken from Caesarea to Rome by soldiers of e empire. Therefore Paul was delivered to a Roman centurion named Julius. There were also oer prisoners in his care. The Bible tells us at Aristarchus, a Macedonian Christian was wi em. In Colossians 4:10 Paul refers to Aristarchus as being a "fellow prisoner." It may well have been at he was a prisoner on is journey wi Paul. We can also learn of anoer Christian who was present. The use of e wo "we" so often in is chapter tells us at Luke, who wrote is book of Acts and also his gospel, was wi Paul. His status however is unknown to us. We do not know if he also was a prisoner or merely a companion to Paul while going to Rome. When you examine is chapter carefully, you will realize at ere is so much detail given in e telling of e story, at e writer must have been on boa. On is journey, ree ships were required to get everyone to Rome. The first ship was one of Adramyttium. This ship took Paul from Caesarea and made its first stop in Sidon to e nor where Paul was allowed to visit wi some friends from e church. Next ey left Sidon and went on to e souern coast of Asia Minor to a city and a port called Myra. It was ere at ey left e Adramyttium ship to find anoer in oer to continue. Julius, e centurion found anoer ship going eir way. This was an Alexandrian ship traveling from Egypt to Rome at had called at e port of Myra. I believe at all e passengers who were on boa e first ship are on is one too. Now is ship we do know some ings about. It was a cargo ship carrying a load of wheat from Egypt to Rome. It was also a very large ship for its time, most likely well over 100 feet long and 30 feet wide. This Conditional Christianity 23 Annual Mid-West Lectures Page 1 be be sold. 2 chapter will tell us at it was not steered by a rudder but by two steering oars at e back on each side. So is ship was not an easy one to handle. But it was large and heavy wi cargo and also we will read at ere were in all 276 persons on boa. That certainly suggests at it was a very large ship. The first stop for is ship wi Paul now on boa was Cnidus. And Luke tells us at even at short trip was made wi difficulty. This was because e wind was now not favorable for westwa travel so ey proceeded sou around e east end of e island of Crete. Crete is a major island in e eastern half of e Mediterranean Sea. It is about 125 miles long and 60 miles wide. They sailed around to e souern side of Crete, again wi difficulty and landed at a port called Fair Havens where ey spent many days. In verse 9 we learn at e Fast was already over. This indicates to us what time of year it was, since e only fast required of e Jews was e Day of Atonement in mid October. Now at many days have gone by it is likely late October or early November. There was an old saying which sailors on e Mediterranean Sea knew very well at went like is: "Sailing is doubtful in September; impossible in November." So as winter grew closer, e time for sailing was rapidly ending. Now e harbor at Fair Havens was an open port, exposed to e weaer from e sea. And e city of Lasea was small and not very comfortable. They knew at e port of Phoenix (Phenice) was just 32 miles west on e same sou coast of Crete. The harbor ere was protected from e weaer and e city was much larger and more accommodating. They preferred to spend e winter ere and so ey were considering sailing on. In verse 10, Paul warns em not to try to make is trip. He said, "Sirs, I perceive at is voyage will be wi hurt and much damage, not only of e lading and e ship, but also of our lives." Paul made is warning accoing to his own understanding. But Julius consulted wi e ship's owner who was on boa and wi e sailors who all agreed at if e winds became favorable, ey should try to make it to Phoenix and spend e winter ere. Julius accepted eir decision and when e breeze shifted from e sou, ey set sail. They ought is would be an easy trip to make. After all, it was just 32 miles and ey would stay in sight of e coast. But Luke tells us at no sooner had ey left Fair Havens at e winds shifted from e noreast and a severe storm arose. This storm immediately caught e ship and ey could sail no furer. So ey let e winds drive e ship where ey would. They tried to guide e ship as best as ey could wi e steering oars. They first noticed at ey had gone sou by a small island named Clauda which was 23 miles sou of Crete. It was at is place at ey decided to bring up e small landing boat which was being pulled behind e ship. This was done to protect it from being broken against e side of e ship. The Bible also tells us at ey used helps or cables to secure e ship. These were passed under e bottom of e ship and tightened wi winches to keep e ship from leaking and coming apart in e storm. They truly recognized e severity of is storm. They were also afraid of being blown too far to e sou and running into e Syrtis Sands off e norern coast of Africa. So ey lightened e ship by rowing overboa some of e cargo. Three days later ey also tossed out some of e ship's tackling which ey probably ought ey could get by wiout. 3 In verse 20 we are told at it had been many days wiout seeing e sun or e stars. This made navigation impossible. So ey did not know where ey were or where ey were going. Thus ey lost all hope of ever being saved. The Bible also tells us at all e people on boa had been fasting ever since ey left Fair Havens. For it was right after ey left at e storm had started. But at night, an angel of God came to Paul and brought him a comforting message. The next morning, Paul assembled all e people on e deck to tell em what e message was. Paul's wos begin in verse 21. "Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained is harm and loss. And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for ere shall be no loss of any man's life among you, but of e ship. For ere stood by me is night e angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve, saying, Fear not, Paul; ou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God ha given ee all em at sail wi ee." This is what e angel told Paul. So Paul told e people, "Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, at it shall be even as it was told me." And so Paul comforts ese people saying, "God will protect us as long as we are sailing in is ship." Now it was e fourteen day since ey left Fair Havens. Remember ey were not using sails, ey were only letting e storm take em where it would. It was now two weeks at ey had been in is storm. It was on is very night at e sailors could hear e sound of waves breaking on nearby rocks. Knowing what at meant ey immediately began to take soundings and found at e water where ey were was only 120 feet deep. A little later ey measured e water again and now it was only 90 feet deep. So even ough it was midnight and ey could not see, ey knew for sure at ere was land nearby. Fearing at e ship would be smashed on some rocks ey tossed out four anchors from e stern of e ship and prayed for e day to arrive. A little later e sailors had gone to e bow of e ship under e pretense of dropping more anchors ere. What ey were really doing was trying to flee e ship in e landing boat and leave e rest on eir own. But Paul saw what ey were doing and he warned e centurion Julius saying, "Except ese abide in e ship, ye cannot be saved" (Acts 27:31). This warning was directed especially at Julius and e soldiers. What he meant was, "Unless ese sailors stay in e ship for now, neier you, or I, nor anyone else will be saved. They were going to need ese experienced sailors to get us safely to shore when e time came." So e soldiers immediately cut e boat loose to prevent any more escape attempts. Well when e morning came, Paul pleaded for everyone to take some nourishment because ey had been fasting for 14 days. So when ey brought out bread, Paul gave anks to God in e presence of all of ese men. They distributed e bread and ey all ate of it. Now at e sun was up ey could see e nearby land but ey did not recognize it. But ey saw a beach and planned to run e ship aground ere and get off of e ship. So ey cut loose e anchors, untied e steering oars to use em again, ey raised e mainsail to make for e beech. The Bible says at e bow of e ship became buried in e sand but at e waves were so furious at ey were breaking up e ship from e stern. It was at is time at e soldiers, fearing at e prisoners would escape offered to kill em all. But Julius wanted to get Paul safely to Rome and said, "No." So Julius said at everyone who Conditional Christianity 23 Annual Mid-West Lectures Page 3 be be sold. 4 could swim was to get to e shore first. Those who could not swim would soon be able to find some boas or parts of e ship at ey could use to get to shore. And so e last verse of is chapter tells us "ey escaped all safe to land." This was quite an amazing journey. They were 14 days in e storm. They knew not where ey were nor were ey able to control where ey were going. Chapter 28 tells us at e name of e island where ey had landed was called Malta (Melita). Remember, it was only a journey of 32 miles at ey had intended to make. But e storm had blown em a distance of 600 miles in two weeks. Can you imagine being on a ship like at, in a time like at was and not knowing where you were; wiout any control, in a storm of at severity, or even knowing if you would survive? Interestingly enough, ey had been blown in e direction of Rome. And after winter ey did arrive at Rome on eir i ship of e journey. Luke did not write about ese events merely to tell us an interesting story. They serve to teach us many important lessons. Some of which I would like to rehearse for you now. 1. Alough Paul knew God had promised e safety of all ose on boa, he also knew he was expected to do his part in carrying out God's plan. The Bible tells us in verse 31 at when e sailors tried to escape from e ship, Paul was e one who told is to e centurion. Paul himself could not stop e sailors from leaving; he was a prisoner and very likely bound in chains. But he could tell e one who could do someing about it and at is what he did. It was Julius who stopped e crew from leaving e ship but he acted at e report of Paul. The sailors were needed to see at e ship made it to e beach where ey could all land in safety. Paul understood at he himself would have to do what was necessary for God's plan to come to pass. And it is important for us to realize e tru of is in our day. God has made promises of blessings to Christians, but at does not mean at we are to just sit around and wait for em to appear. In Matew 6:11, Jesus taught us to pray, asking God for our daily bread. But we don't just sit in e kitchen and wait for it to appear in e cabinet, do we? And Paul taught at if anyone who can work, refuses to work, he should not be fed by oers (2 Thessalonians 3:10). So if we work, en wi God's help, His plan can be realized. Also, in e spiritual realm we know at God has provided salvation from sin, rough e sacrifice of Jesus, for all mankind (1 John 2:2). But if we don't take e gospel into all e world, how are ey going to be saved by at gospel? (Romans 10:14) which must be obeyed for salvation to be received (2 Thessalonians 1:7, 8). 2. It takes more an just belonging to God to be a faiful Christian and receive His blessings, one must also trust God and serve God. In verse 23 when Paul was addressing e people on boa e ship, he said, "There stood by me is night e angel of God, whose I am." He was telling em at he belonged to God. God was not HIS possession; HE was God's possession. But is in itself was not enough. He went on in verse 25 to state his fai in God. He said, "I believe God at it shall be even as it was told me." Paul had an absolute trust in God. It was a perfect confidence, at what God had spoken, He could perform. Even if e outcome Conditional Christianity 23 Annual Mid-West Lectures Page 4 be be sold. 5 seemed to be impossible, God could take care of Paul and any oers too. But we need to have is abiding trust in God. But still more an is is required. Verse 23 shows at Paul also served his God. Those who work for God, doing His will in eir lives receive God's blessings. Paul understood at our lives should be a "living sacrifice" to God (Romans 12:1). Christianity is much more an simply belonging to God. So many Christians however are content just to have eir name on e church roll. But if eir fai never grows and ey never do anying to be of any service to God, what is eir value to God? 3. God is not willing at any should perish. The apostle Peter uses ese exact wos in 2 Peter 3:9. Peter ere is using e days of Noah and e flood to illustrate e coming Day of Judgment. 2 Peter 2:5 says at Noah was a preacher of righteousness. This indicates to us at while at ark was being built, Noah was preaching and encouraging e people of his day to repent and live righteous lives so at ey too might enter e ark and be saved in e coming flood. Noah did is because God was "not willing at any should perish." So too in our study is hour, God was not willing at any of e 275 persons on boa e ship wi Paul would perish. And so God sent His angel to tell Paul how ey all could be saved. And Paul told em at ey needed to stay togeer as long as possible so ey all could be saved. Verse 24 says, "God ha given ee all em at sail wi ee." There was a way of salvation available for everyone on boa. This was because God did not want em to perish. The same is true of mankind today. Peter taught in 2 Peter 3, at ese wos "not willing at any should perish" applied to e way God views e world right now, in ese last days. God's delay in e return of Jesus to e ear is not due to an inability of God to keep His Wo. It is because God wants all to repent and obey e gospel. Thus He gives us more time. 4. God's promise involving eir safety was a conditional one. It was based upon eir remaining in e ship. The ship was e place of safety which God was using to keep em alive in e storm. If some left e ship early, at is, before it arrived near enough to where ey could swim to shore en ey would be lost. It was necessary for em to stay on boa and guide e ship until ey could reach land safely. And when ey did as Paul warned, "ey escaped all safe to land" (verse 44). The same is true for Christians today. God wants us all to be saved and so He has provided a place of safety for us today too. In Ephesians 1:3, e apostle Paul says, "Blessed be e God and Faer of our Lo Jesus Christ, who ha blessed us wi all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ." The place where God chooses to bless today is only "in Christ." What does it mean "in Christ?" It means in Christ's church. This same Paul would teach in Ephesians 5:23 "Christ is e head of e church: and he is e saviour of e body." The body of Christ is also e church of Christ. When Christ returns, He will save e church out of e world. So e place of safety today is in e church of Christ. That is where "all spiritual blessings" are to be found. 6 Well, what kind of spiritual blessings? For one, salvation from our sins is found only in Christ, as is e hope of eternal life in heaven. Also e relationship of having God as our heavenly Faer as well as e indwelling of e Holy Spirit are blessings for ose who are in Christ. Oers include; being a part of e church as e family of God, e privilege of worshiping God, e privilege of praying to God, having help in time of temptation to sin, having a purpose for our lives and experiencing e joy of e Christian living. All of ese spiritual blessings are available from God, but ey are available only in one place; "in Christ." Well, how does one get into Christ? We get into Christ when we complete our obedience to e gospel of Christ. One must hear e preaching of e gospel of Christ. One must believe at Jesus is e actual Son of God (John 8:24). Next, one must turn away from eir sins (Luke 13:3). Then one must confess eir fai in Christ wi eir mou (Matew 10:32). Finally, one must be baptized in oer to be saved (Mark 16:16). When one has done all ese ings, en he is "in Christ." Galatians 3:27 teaches, "as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ." Baptism puts one into Christ; at is, into His body which also is His church. And remember, in Ephesians 5:23, it is e church which Christ will save when He returns. It was a great tragedy at only 8 people were saved in Noah's ark when e invitation was open to all. The reason at only 8 people were saved is at only 8 people got on e ark. That was e only place of safety provided by God. Today, ere is still only one place of safety from e spiritual destruction at is ahead. How many will get into at place? I do not know. But God is now waiting so at more can be saved by eir obedience to e gospel. Where are you? Are you saved or are you lost? Are you in e Lo's church or are you on e outside.
