1 St Peder s Evangelical Lutheran Church 4600 E 42nd St. Minneapolis, MN (612) April 2016 Issue 4 The Messenger A Word from Pastor Julie Dear Partners in Ministry, Greetings to you in these Easter days! May the hope and promise of the resurrected Christ be the gift of new-life to you in this season and beyond. I m counting on that gift of new-life this month as I undergo knee replacement surgery on April 19. I will eventually need both knees replaced, but am starting with the left one. I will be in Woodwinds Hospital in Woodbury for only a couple of days, and will then continue my recovery and rehab therapy at my mother s home in Woodbury (she lives in a single-level townhouse) for the first couple of weeks. After that, my plan is to complete my recovery at my home. I will be taking medical leave for approximately one month, unless there are complications. During my absence from St Peder s, there will be a supply pastor who ll be with you on Sundays and provide pastoral care as needed. Shannon will also take on some extra hours during this time. Contact information for the supply pastor will be available through the church office and on church voice mail. I have been faithfully doing my pre-surgery exercises and have every confidence in my surgeon and his team and the hospital staff. It goes without saying that I trust God s healing presence will be with me every step of the way! Your prayers will be a gift as well. You will be in my heart and prayers during my absence and I will look forward to being with you again later in May! 2 Join us for Lutheran Social Services Sunday, April 3 St Peder s is a long-time committed supporter of Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota. Not only do we regularly make donations from our Tabitta Kassen Endowment Fund to a variety of LSS programs, you take turns weekly providing a meal to the Safe House for homeless teens and the confirmation class provides Christmas gifts for homeless teens and currently two Shepherding Groups are collecting needed items for LSS Rising Youth Works Program. On Sunday, April 3, our preacher will be Sarah Kretschmann. She is the Congregational Relations Associate at Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota. This fall, she was able to take part in editing, formatting and contributing to the creation of the My Neighbor is Muslim small group study in partnership with Luther College expert Todd Green, Luther Seminary professors and other staff at LSS. Sarah has been with Lutheran Social Service just under one year and is currently a part-time student at Luther Seminary in addition to serving at LSS. Every day, Sarah learns more about the breadth of services Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota provides and she is happy to be with us to share more about the invaluable work of LSS, made possible through support of compassionate congregations like ours. Sarah will be with us for worship and the coffee hour between services, and we look forward to welcoming her! Loving Our Neighbor As people of faith, one way we love God is to love our neighbor - and to offer hospitality and welcome to the stranger. This spring, St Peder s is joining with our mission partner congregation, Trinity Lutheran/Riverside as well as Mt Olivet Lutheran, Plymouth, Nokomis Heights Lutheran, and Dar al Hijrah Mosque to co-sponsor a refugee family who will be settling in the Twin Cities. This co-sponsorship in in partnership with LSS of MN Refugee Services. Refugee sponsorship has changed since the 1980s and 90s. Now LSS provides most of the services needed: they train and orientate our 2-3 volunteers who ll work directly with the family for 3-6 months, they secure affordable housing and provide furniture, provide full case management, assist the co-sponsors as needed, and coordinate all the financial resources. Photo from LSSmn.org/refugeeservices So what will we do? Well, chances are the family will benefit from a kitchen shower or something of that nature. We can do that! We ve already provided some funds (as have all the other co-sponsors) through our Tabitta Kassen Endowment Fund. Now we are waiting to be matched with a family. Chances are the family will not be from Syria, since they are not yet being sent to settle into a new home in Minnesota. If you d like more information on this partnership or have an interest in participating in some way, please talk with Pastor Julie. As we hear more from LSS, we ll pass along the information. Meanwhile, we look forward to welcoming our new neighbor to our community! 2
3 A Note from Council President, Curt Petersen I d like to take this opportunity to thank you for electing me as your president. It s an honor to be asked, and I ll do my best to take on this task you ve given me, though I m still getting used to hearing Good morning, Mr. President on Sunday mornings. I d like to thank Judy Hogan for leaving everything in such fine order; she s left some big shoes to fill. In addition, I want to thank you, the congregation, for putting in place a great church council that has been working hard to take care of our church. I m sure they will continue on that path. Homes, cars, washers and dryers; almost anything we own needs maintenance. The same is true for the wonderful home that we call St. Peder s. We have done some large projects on our building in the last few years, and as caretakers of our Home, our work continues. Some of you may have noticed the waterdamaged walls in the library, and the temporary measures to hold out the water near the accessible restroom. The flat roofs over the offices and hallway and over the education wing are in need of replacement. The Property committee is currently getting bids. We have some money in our roof fund, but we will need to finance a portion of the work. The council will be bringing forward a proposal for that funding in the near future. We will be calling a special meeting to seek approval from the congregation at that time. We are hoping to have this done during this summer. Meg, Alice, and I were out of town and unfortunately missed the cod fish dinner. I have heard from numerous sources that it was another great success. We may have broken a record for number of people served! As always, this kind of thing doesn t happen without the work of a dedicated committee and many volunteers. Thank you so much to all of you who made this happen. Peace, Curt Petersen, Council President GROWNUPS AND KOINONIA SPRING LUNCH Twin Lakes CSA is offering plants/seedlings for sale this spring. Delivery will be on Saturday, May 21, at St Peder s. You may pick-up your orders from 10:30 a.m. until noon. (Orders will not be set aside to pick up at another time.) You can order anything from tomatoes to herbs to vegetables to flowers. Order forms are available on the table in the entry way. Don t miss this opportunity to share a pot-luck lunch at noon on Friday, April 15 in the Fellowship Hall! All retired folks are welcome to bring a favorite dish and even invite a friend as we enjoy the spring and a good meal and good conversation. See you then! 3
4 FAIR TRADE SUNDAY, MAY 1! What a great way to celebrate May Day! Don t miss this St. Peder s tradition! Join us for ONE worship service at 9:00 a.m. followed by a festive bazaar of certified fair trade goods, jewelry, chocolate and MORE from Ten Thousand Villages, a nonprofit fair trade retailer. Find Mom a unique Mother s day gift and support artisans around the world! We'll also be serving and selling an assortment of Peace Coffee (which is also a fair-trade product). THANK YOU GRANDVIEW CHOIR HOST FAMILIES! A special word of thanks to all who hosted the Grandview University Choir in March. The concert was lovely and we got to hear them again in Sunday worship! Thank you to all St Peder s folks who hosted the students and staff overnight. We re grateful for your generous hospitality! THE WORLD BELOVED: A BLUEGRASS MASS Join us at St Peder's on May 22 nd for Carol Barnett's glorious work The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass. Bringing together the classical choral style with down home verve of bluegrass, Barnett has put together a piece that will have you toe-tapping and head-bobbing to the traditional texts of a mass: Kyrie, Credo, Sanctus, etc. Barnett writes of her work My highest hope is that listeners coming from one tradition classical or bluegrass and perhaps dubious about the other, might discover something new and wonderful in the combination, as I have. We are certain that The World Beloved will scintillate and delight you. So grab your friends, come to St Peder's at 9:00 am on the 22 nd of May, settle in to a pew, and enjoy this exciting fusion of musical styles. 4
5 Children, Youth & Family PEACE CAMP AT ST. PEDER S From June 20-24th we'll be holding our first annual Peace Camp (think Vacation Bible school with a peace and justice focus). This year the theme will be Farming! We'll look at the fruits of the spirit, talk about sustainable food, play games, make crafts and more! This peace camp will be for children ages three up through 6th grade. It will happen Monday-Friday from 9:00-12:00. The counselors and leaders will be youth in 7th-12th grade. (For older youth the day will go from 8:30-2:00 each day and include a special fun outing after the camp is over on Friday.) This will be a great opportunity for youth to get service hours for school. You can register by sending Shannon an with your child's name and age/grade. Upcoming Events: April 6: 7:00pm Pub Theology at Parkway Pizza April 10: 2:00-5:00: Jumping at Airmaxx April 13: 7:00pm Children, Youth, and Family Committee Meeting JUMP into Family Fun On April 10th from 2pm to 5pm we're having a family fun event at Airmaxx in Eden Prairie. When you buy a pass you get three hours of jump time. These passes also include laser tag and mini-golf. Kiddos have to be 7 or older to do laser tag but ALL AGES can do the trampolines. Tickets are $21 in advance or $24 at the door. This is a great deal as usually tickets are over $20 for two hours of jump time only. AND as a bonus, this event serves as a fundraiser for the theatre company I started. So we all get to have a great time jumping together and support a good cause. You can contact Shannon to buy your tickets. Once you've purchased tickets, please let me know so I can have a list of all of the St. Peder's folks coming. If you can't afford the tickets but would still like to go, let me know as there is scholarship money available. Kearns, will premiere in late April with shows on April 29 (at 7:30pm) and 30 (with a matinee at 1:30pm and an evening show at7:30pm) and May 6 (at 7:30pm) and 7 (with a matinee at 1:30pm and an evening show at 7:30pm). This venue is accessible to those with disabilities and will have all gender restrooms for this event. Jamie, a transgender man, gets called back to his family home by his mother, Catherine, with the cryptic message that his sister, Emily, is in trouble. With the support of his loving wife, Alison, Jamie comes home to confront family struggles, a mother that doesn t recognize him, and a past that he thought he had left behind but that impacts him in ways he can t even see. A touching story about family, connections, and what it means to have a home. Uprising believes that stories have the power to change the world, especially when marginalized people get to tell their own stories. We create art that makes space for people who are traditionally excluded or underrepresented. We tell stories that challenge perceptions, ask questions, and provide new ways forward. Together in Mission The offerings of your financial resources allow us not only to support the mission of our congregation, but to share our resources with others in ministry so that all may know of Christ s love. TOGETHER we work on Christ s behalf in the world - none of us can do it alone!
