2 On September 9th after the morning worship service, we will have a variety of service projects to do together that will make a big difference in our community. From packaging blizzard kits for folks who are elderly, to creating lanyards for Hiawatha School, to cleaning up the riverside, to making comfort kits for kids in foster care: no matter your ability there is a project you can participate in. For one of our projects we are going to be doing a drive to create Comfort Care bags for youth entering foster care. Basic items that may be helpful and/or needed during a foster care transition, such as: toothbrush/toothpaste, socks, underwear, pajamas, book, journal, lap blanket, comb/brush, new stuffed animal, etc. can be brought to the church and placed in the basket outside of the office. On September 9th we ll assemble the bags. We re creating bags with contents for ages so be mindful of that when making your purchases. Help us offer the comfort & care needed by a foster child! All retired folks (or anyone who likes to eat lunch!) are welcome to bring a friend and a favorite fall dish to a potluck on Friday, September 21 at noon. 3 Adult Faith Formation for September/October Beginning September 23 Mental Health and Faith Mental Health and Faith. What does it look like for a community of faith to take the mental health of all people seriously? How can we better work for our own mental health and the health of others? Featuring special guest speakers on suicide prevention, addiction and recovery, dementia, and more. ~ Featured Speakers~ September 23rd we will have Chris More from Mental Health Minnesota as our guest. He will be presenting on Mental Health and how to support folks. September 30th we will have a special speaker (TBD) presenting about suicide prevention. October 7th we will welcome special speakers from Dementia Friends. They will present an informational workshop on understanding Dementia, how to be a friend to those with Dementia, and more. 4 Rally Sunday is September 16th Join us for worship at 9:00 am as we celebrate the return to our fall programming! Shannon will be preaching. After worship plan to stay for special treats and fun for all ages! We will have a bouncy house, Thai hand rolled ice cream from LouLou s, face painting, and lawn games! Heart of the Beast Residency at St. Peder s! Faith Formation for children this Fall is going to be incredible. Each week from September until December we will have a teaching artist in residency from Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre (the folks who do the May Day parade). The teaching artist will work with our children and youth to create puppets and masks and write a Christmas Pageant which will be performed at St. Peder s on December 9th. All ages will meet in the blue classroom upstairs during the 9:00 hour. We will start with a song or two and then create together! Faith Formation Sign Up for Kiddos! 5 Costco Members Do you have Costco membership? Would you be willing to occasionally buy things for the church (we would reimburse you). If so, call or Jeannie in the office. More Volunteers Needed for Sheridan Story It's a once a month commitment on a Friday morning during the school year. You head to Howe School and put pre-packaged bags of food in the lockers of children who have signed up with the program. It usually takes less than an hour. This is a great way to serve our neighbors! Interested? Talk to Shannon! Faith Formation Teacher Teams Needed! We're looking for two more two-person teams to teach Faith Formation in the Fall: one team to teach the 3-5 class and one to teach the 1-6 grade class. Curriculum and training is provided and you teach about twice every six weeks. This is a super fun way to be a part of the lives of the kids of St. Peder's! No previous experience necessary! Interested? Talk to Shannon! Video Volunteers Do you know how to take a video on your phone? We are looking for volunteers to take short videos on Sunday mornings interviewing members (questions would be provided and would only take 1 or 2 minutes per person). Talk to Shannon, Julie Ebbesen (who is a member with the same name as Pastor!) or Jeannie! Photo Volunteers Can you take good pictures on your phone? We need more pics for social media, our website and publications. Looking for 3-5 volunteers who will commit to taking 3-5 pictures when you are here on Sunday. We would love to be able to show new folks what an amazing congregation we have! Simply take your pics and send them to Jeannie at office@stpeders.org. This is a fun and simple way to volunteer! 6 Repentance and Resistance: 2018 Johnson Symposium at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church We are living in a time of coarse inhumanity in the public square. Messages of fear, scarcity, and exclusion dominate the news and threaten to divide us. Many of us are deeply disturbed by the direction of public discourse. Others of us are more intimately affected; our lives, our families, and our way of life are endangered by the rhetoric and the regulations it emboldens. As people of faith, we seek to resist what theologian Eric Barreto calls the arrogations of the empire the power to terrorize, to arrest the innocent, to refuse the refugee, to execute the powerless. Our faith calls us to hear the cries and the hopes of our neighbors and be moved by them. In this moment in history, we pray that God will pry us off of dead center. For as German Lutheran theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer once observed, silence in the face of evil is evil itself Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act. To this end, the theme for this year s Johnson Symposium is Repentance and Resistance. The evening will commence with a confession that throughout history the Christian community s silence has too often amplified our neighbors suffering. We will then privilege the voices of Imam Asad Zaman and Rabbi Michael Latz, who will offer reflections on the current situation in the public square through the lenses of their respective faith traditions. Following their presentations, Senator John Marty will invite us to connect what we have heard with faith in action in the public square. Finally, we will invite all attendees to participate in a social media campaign that seeks to replace fear with love, scarcity with abundance, and exclusion with radical inclusion. (Don t do social media? That s okay. We ll have something for you, too.) Date and Time: Sunday, October 14 from 5:30-9:00 p.m. Registration link: Cost: Sliding scale. (Participants are encouraged to donate $0-$30, based on what feels appropriate for their situation. No one will be turned away.) Net proceeds will be given to Minnesota Council of Churches.

7 Prophetic Imagination Conference September 21-22, 2018 at Plymouth Congregational Church. The conference coincides with the 40th anniversary of Walter Brueggemann's landmark book The Prophetic Imagination. The conference asks: "What is the prophetic vocation today?" Drawing upon the deep spiritual roots of resistance, and embracing the divine pathos of lament, how do we raise a hopeful prophetic voice that challenges empire? Hear speakers and musicians like Traci Blackmon, Miguel De La Torre, Kathy Kelly, Rev. Sekou, and more. Shannon will also be presenting a workshop at the conference. For more or to sign up: An Evening with Mikah Meyer : Saturday, September 22, pm at Saint Paul-Reformation in Saint Paul. LGBT/Christian Advocate, Professional Singer and World Record Adventurer, Mikah Meyer, has been performing across the USA as part of his journey becoming the youngest person to experience all 417 National Park Service sites. A lifelong Lutheran and former Camp Wapogasset counselor, Mikah uses the 1,000s of media pieces from his project to provide a positive image of a gay Christian, and visits churches along his route as a guest preacher, singer, and cabaret show performer sharing a Gospel message inspired by his journey. After being featured on The Today Show this past Easter, Mikah brings his show to the Saint Paul Area Synod! A freewill offering will be collected in lieu of admission.
