Racial Justice: A Work in Progress How do we respond to racism and white privilege? That s a question our church is asking and a question we at St Peder s must consider as well. We ve taken some first steps a group of five attended a two-day conference on racial justice last fall, and we ve had some adult forum time spent talking about diversity. It s time to keep moving forward. Our synod has asked every congregation to prepare a statement on racial justice - and we ll begin working on that in the next weeks. We ll also be planning opportunities for learning, conversation, and action. If you d like to be a part of this working group, we d welcome your voice and participation! Simply talk with Pastor Julie, Shannon Kearns, or Kristi Erickson. We ll make sure you are invited to the next meeting as we engage in this work we re called to do as Christians living-out our love for our neighbor. 2

7 October 1 is Marathon Sunday! Stop by the front doors to greet our guests. 8:30 to 11:00. Sponsored by Shepherding Group 8. Contact Judy Hogan with questions (2judyhogan@gmail.com) ELCA ON GENDER IDENTITY DISCRIMINATION In light of recent public events and conversation, it is important to remember the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) rejects all forms of hatred or discrimination. This includes employment discrimination against the transgender community, as stated in Gender Identity Discrimination, a policy resolution that was adopted by the 2013 ELCA Churchwide Assembly. As church together, it s now more important than ever for us not only to pray, but also stand beside all who are facing many forms of prejudice, stated Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton. Transgender individuals should not be denied the opportunity to participate in our armed forces. We should honor the courage and sacrifice of all members of our military regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation and join those who serve in upholding the respect and dignity of each person. The ELCA has repeatedly spoken against discrimination in law or policy related to sexual orientation or gender identity. The policy resolution, adopted by the Churchwide Assembly in 2013 the highest legislative body of the church instructed the presiding bishop to communicate public support for actions that prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity and encouraged all ELCA synods, congregations and members to do the same. Additionally, as a church, we have committed our support to those whose vocation is in the military ( For Peace in God s World, 1995). The ELCA is a church that belongs to Christ and Christ s church universal, where there is a place for everyone. The call of Christ s people today is to celebrate the diversity of God s creative work and embrace all people in the spirit of love, regardless of race or ethnicity, economic status or gender. Together in Mission is a place riefly, tively, r services. The offerings of your financial resources allow us not only to support the mission of our congregation, but to share our resources with others in ministry so that all may know of Christ s love. TOGETHER we work on Christ s behalf in the world - none of us can do it alone! Thank you for your offerings through the seventh month of A detailed financial summary report is available at the church office for anyone who d like to see it.
