2 Council President s Report - Judy Hogan What Might we Create Together? (Part Two) 17 So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. 20 So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 During Wednesday evening Lenten services, we ve seen exciting stories of congregations that have made themselves new by reinvigorating or reinventing their ministries. Some churches have used existing programs to reach out to new or underserved populations. Others have created new opportunities for fellowship and service that have allowed them to energize existing members and in so doing attract new people to their congregations. I am thankful for the examples these congregations have provided. St. Peder s is a rich organization with many resources and capabilities. We have a wonderful staff. We have a fine facility. And, most critical of all, we are blessed with members who are passionate about our ministry, who possess talents for service and who are willing to share their talents in the world. In last month s Messenger article I asked you to ponder some questions as you walked your personal Lenten journey: How you would like to see St. Peder s regenerating itself? How might we expand our activities as ambassadors for Christ? How might we enhance our own fellowship and form even stronger bonds within our faith community? How might we, together, become the people Christ would most desire us to be? Over the next few months your Council will be doing some strategic planning and considering new opportunities for fulfilling St. Peder s mission: Rooted in our heritage and embracing the future, we joyfully live the gospel with open hearts, open hands and open doors. We d really like to hear your ideas. Please contact Pastor Julie or any Council member to share your dreams, intentions or inspirations. Paul Aitchison Steve Austin Karin Buchen Jean Evers Judy Hogan Carl Jensen Darrick Jensen Peter Juhl Curt Petersen Craig Rocheleau This is an exciting time for St. Peder s. We have many opportunities that are just waiting to be discovered. Please continue to pray for your church, your council and each other as we discover our future together. An Opportunity to Serve Just as we need folks who help prepare and serve the meals we share at St Peder s, so we need volunteers to help prepare our sanctuary for worship services and the holy meal we share in Christ s name. If you re interested in working with Pastor Julie to provide altar care - changing paraments, washing linens, and caring for the items we use for communion and baptism please contact her at pastorjulie@stpeders.net or give her a call at 612/ No prior experience is necessary and all are invited to consider this invitation!

3 For All the Saints We give thanks for the lives of three St Peder s members who died in March. Orloue Gisselquist ( ) was a retired professor of Augsburg College (the history department) and also served on various church and community boards over the years. He was a resident of Lyngblomsten Care Center for several years and looked forward to daily visits from family members, especially his wife, Marilyn. Orleau died on March 16 and his memorial service was at St Peder s on March 23. Pearl Halverson ( ) passed away on Wednesday. March 27th at Episcopal Church Homes in St. Paul. Throughout her life Pearl was involved in church activities, including teaching Sunday school, the DFL party and the League of Women Voters. When not travelling with Fred, her husband, she enjoyed time at their cabin in northern Minnesota as well as their farm in Revere, MN. Pearl was well-read throughout her life and kept abreast of world affairs daily via CNN. Most important to her was her family. She was very proud of her sons and their families and her great-granddaughters brought her much joy. Her funeral was at St. Peder's on April 2. Fylla Kildegaard ( ) died in her home at Becketwood on March 18 surrounded by family. Fylla and her husband Axel retired to Circle Pines from Chicago, where Fylla was Librarian at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. Fylla was a wonderful Storyteller, and some of our Sunday School children may remember her tales. She loved gathering people together - and had a talent for writing humorous parodies in song. Fylla was a true Grundtvigian Dane and will be missed by her many friends and family. A memorial service celebrating Fylla s life will be held at St Peder s on Saturday, April 6, at 11:00 a.m. We entrust Orloue, Pearl, and Fylla to God s eternal embrace and remember their families in our prayers. GATHER BIBILE STUDY: The April Bible Study, STORYTELLING, is found in the April Gather Magazine. The theme verse for this lesson is, When they arrived, they called (gathered) the church together and related all that God had done with them, and how he had opened a door of faith for the Gentiles. And they stayed there with the disciples for some time. (Acts 14:27-28) Date: April 16, 2013 Time: 9:30-11:00 Place: Church Library Women and men are welcome. We have extra lesson books in the Church Library Dates: April 3 rd and 17 th Time: 9:30 Place: Church Fellowship Hall QUILTERS GROUP: There is one quilt left to tie, and we are ready to put together our last 18 quilts to meet our goal for this year. 6 Mission Trip 2013: Puerto Rico Each month will feature two of our Mission Trip participants to share a little bit more about who they are & why they want to head out on this adventure. Suzie Bexell I'm Suzie Bexell and I'm a senior. I go to Minnehaha Academy and I love to be social and meet new people. I wanted to go on this trip to Puerto Rico because I love branching out to new places, and experiencing different cultures. I love to travel and I especially love the mission trip program- I went to Brooklyn and I ended up having a blast. I can't wait to meet lots of new people and help step outside of my comfort zone to help spread God's love. I am looking forward to going to a new place that I've never been to before. I'm excited but nervous to meet new people because I can be shy towards people at first. I've gone to one more mission trip before, and that was Brooklyn, so this will be my second mission trip. I'm so lucky to be able to go on this trip, and I'm blessed for having the ability to go. I'm grateful towards all of the church for participating in our fundraising efforts and I love the group of people I'm going with. Juliet Paulson Hi! I'm Juliet Paulson, and I'm a freshman at Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Arts. I love to act, as well as sing, write, and daydream. This is my first mission trip, and I am looking forward to learning about and experiencing a different culture than the one I'm used to. I also hope to get to know new people and experience a new way to look at my faith through the mission trip. I'm excited to learn about the island's history and try salsa dancing, but I am a little nervous for the long plane ride Want to help us hit our fundraising goal? Grab one of the 144 envelopes & donate today!
