It is my hope and expectation that we will continue to build upon the great work that has been done in past fraternal years. None of this is possible without the dedication and devotion of each of us in the Council. With our combined and united efforts we are able to achieve very good things in the name of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. Even if you are able to only volunteer for one or two events per year, your participation is greatly valued and appreciated. If you know of any practicing Catholic men who are not members, please do not hesitate to invite them to join. For the great work of the Knights of Columbus to continue, new members must always be sought. We welcome any Knights who wish to volunteer to help serve after the 7:30 and 9:00 AM masses on Pancake Breakfast Sundays. Please contact Lloyd LaComb llacomb456@comcast.net to volunteer. Breakfast is only served after the 7:30 & 9 AM Masses. Jim Click Car Raffle ~ Our key fundraiser for this Fall will again be the Jim Click Car Raffle (Millions for Tucson). Once again, Larry Lewis, has coordinated with the Jim Click Raffle folks to have this year s car, a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee here on September 9th to officially kick off the campaign. All raffle tickets purchased go completely to the Knights of Columbus designated charities, because Jim Click is donating this car to the winner. Since our selling dates are in conjunction with our Fall pancake breakfast schedule, we will need as many Brother Knights as possible to volunteer their time to help sell raffle tickets after the Sunday Masses. Please contact Larry Lewis larryklewis@gmail.com to volunteer. Blood Drive Blood Drive ~ Our next scheduled Blood Drive is September 16 th in O Leary Hall from 7:30 AM until noon. Please donate, if you can. We can always use Knights to help with registration and serving juice and snacks at the post-donation canteen. All-Knighter ~ Our council s annual all-guy fun social, the All-Knighter, will be on Friday September 28th from 6-9 PM in O Leary Hall. We hope to have a guest speaker again. This key event is an opportunity to open the door for membership to eligible Catholic men by reaching out to the parish community. Council members are encouraged to bring a potential catholic candidate with them, including family, friend or parishioner you have met at church. The Knights of Columbus is a fraternity, a brotherhood, and it requires effort to strengthen those bonds. The annual "All Knighter is one of those activities that offers members this opportunity. Please join your council brothers, bring a friend and share in fraternity while enjoying Brats, Burgers and Beer. Charlie Farnsworth is the Chairman for this event. Give your RSVP to GK Bart Pemberton blpemberton@icloud.com. PWID Drive ~ Our PWID (People with Intellectual Disabilities) Drive starts next month on October 12 th /14 th. Our approved Safeway dates are Friday and Saturday, October 12 th /13 th. We are in the St. Thomas Courtyard October 13 th, after the 5:00 PM Mass and October 14 th after all the Masses. John has decided that Sunday October 28th will be the Meet & Greet day for St. Thomas groups to make their pitch to fellow parishioners to join their parish activities. Please join PGK Patrick McMahon, membership chairman, ( ) patrick48@comcast.net, if you can spare some time in the parish hall to promote membership in our council. 5 Page 5 How s Your Forgiveness Line of Credit By: Deacon Ed Sheffer What does your forgiveness line of credit look like? In all my academic endeavors I don t recall coming across a class being offered that taught forgiveness. I absolutely assure you we didn t cover forgiveness in any course curriculum of the senior business management courses I took. Having been groomed in a corporate culture, fixed on a business success mentality, I was taught this golden rule He who has the gold makes the rules. Forgiveness and mercy were viewed as weakness; leave those for the flower child and wimp! Peter asked Jesus how many times we had to let the recidivist wrongdoer off the hook. He offers Jesus the perfect number, seven, thinking he will score some points being overly generous. He gets a mindboggling response. You can t count that high Peter, but God can. Why is this forgiving so important? Why is it so crucial, that it is the hinge to Jesus perfect prayer: forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those? There is a distinct link between forgiving and being forgiven. It is in releasing another from their wrongdoing that one is freed them self. Forgiveness is not an abstract idea that Jesus thinks would be helpful for us to play better in the sandbox. It s a must to be incorporated into anyone s life who is his disciple. So what is it that is at the hidden core, which causes a challenge with forgiveness and the need for it? If we go back to the very beginning, we will not only see where the concept of forgiveness comes from, but we will understand why it s essential to forgive. The ultimate sin committed in the Garden rests in choosing not to listen to the creator of love. There are always serious consequences with not choosing love. You want to see collateral damage by not choosing to love and or forgive, you don t have to dwell on any bad guys, look no further than the heroes of the Old Testament. One can t miss the immense desecration passed on by their not loving more fully and forgiving. And then the game changer enters the scene. In Jesus final human act, for the benefit of the very ones who rejected him, disgraced him, condemned him, scourged him, exposed his naked body, drove nails into him, mocked him, spit on him, and left him to die a grotesque death; for these people, Jesus prayed for forgiveness. They never apologized and nor did they ask for forgiveness. Jesus simply forgave them because it was in him to do it. He is the revelation of the mercy and love of God. He is what God is like. Jesus becomes the living, breathing, flesh-and-blood expression of God s mercy and compassion. Forgiveness flows from him. As much as we challenge this with all the wrongdoing in our world, forgiveness doesn t depend on earning it by some achievement of our own. God forgives because God chooses to and reconciliation is accomplished through the compassion of Jesus Christ. Without forgiveness, something vital is missing from our relationship with God, with our-selves and with others. To forgive is possibly the greatest challenge that Jesus laid at our feet. He also commands us to love one another as he loved us. He teaches that there is no love without forgiveness. I sense that no one is ever capable of truly understanding forgiveness, if from the start, they don t believe in sin. Accepting that we have done wrong and have the ability to do it again is the first and necessary step toward forgiveness. St. Francis of Assisi understood this well: It is in pardoning, that we are pardoned. Let each of us be open to grace and strive to learn to forgive, to practice it, to choose it, and to want it. For all we long to be rests in Christ and our journey to him begins with what is in our human heart.

7 ~ FIELD AGENT ~ Raising Awareness About Life Insurance Each September since 2003 has been designated as Life Insurance Awareness Month. Like most awareness-raising campaigns, Life Insurance Awareness Month was created because there is an overwhelming lack of understanding of life insurance, its uses, its benefits, and its variations among the general public. Each year, the Life Insurance Market Research Association (LIMRA) puts out the results from a recent survey, and unfortunately, the numbers they report continue to be discouraging. A recent survey found that more than 75 percent of people polled did not have a personal financial advisor, even though 68 percent of them said their opinion of the current economic conditions was somewhat unfavorable or very unfavorable. Tony LoMonaco, FICF In other words, a majority of those surveyed were Field Agent uncomfortable with the economy and the uncertainty PO Box 189 it brings, yet they did not seek professional assistance. Maybe they spoke with their friends and family. Vail, Arizona Maybe they hoped the instability would go away on its own. Maybe they did not know to whom to turn. (520) Cell (520) Office If you fall into this category, please remember that as a member of the Knights of Columbus, you have a azshieldforlife.com full-time, professional agent you can call your own. My primary responsibility is the care and service of anthony.lomonaco@kofc.org your family s life insurance, retirement and long-term care needs. I ll answer your questions because I want your decisions to be informed ones. I want to help. Another LIMRA statistic said 43 percent of people did not buy life insurance because they worry about making the wrong decision. Talk with me, your agent, and, afterwards, you ll understand that the only wrong decision was not purchasing sooner to protect your family s future.
