We are soon approaching one our favorite times of year: our summer heat has finally faded until next May, Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner. This November has the added event of a mid-term election. As Knights, we have a civic responsibility to exercise our franchise at every opportunity. A movie that opened within the last few weeks, Gosnell, centers on the murder trial of one of the largest serialkillers in U.S. history. He was a physician who ran an abortion clinic. How does this tie into an election? If we wish to combat the culture of death in the U.S., one of the ways to do so is to do our utmost to vote for and elect those who promise (and then fulfill that promise) to promote a culture of life. Let us remember to always promote the culture of life through our daily activities, and we will have that much more to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Vivat Jesus, Bart Pemberton Grand Knight, Council Page 2

Oktoberfest 2018 Parishioners were greatly entertained by the singing performances of the Kids Unlimited group for Oktoberfest Our Worthy Chaplain, Msgr Al Schifano, and other parishioners look on. Oktoberfest Chairs Lou Attinasi (left) and John Mulholland (right) served on the planning committee for Oktoberfest 2018 and took tickets for the event. John also mustered some very nice door prizes. Thanks Lou and John! Knight of the Month Steve Marten is our council's Knight of the Month for November Steve has been doing yeoman s work as our Worthy Financial Secretary. He has put many hours into ensuring the smooth flow and accounting of monies received and distributed by the Council, participated in long audits, and in addition to all that he recently chaired a very successful Oktoberfest event (in conjunction with the Marian Club). And he has only been a member of our Council and a Knight for two years! Thanks Steve!

Kingdom Come Deacon Ed Sheffer Our youth group was recently on a three day retreat on Mt Lemmon. While on this retreat we explored some questions that Jesus poses in Scripture. And we did this in an incredibly creative and engaging way. We used Disney and many of their characters as a back-drop. Disney really is the master at creating a magical world. There is nobody better at putting art in motion, offering well-crafted story lines and characters, and providing plenty of human emotion mixed with a sound life message. Take for instance the movie Tangled and how it reveals that sometimes the people we think care about us do not actually have our best interest in mind and one does need to go deep and outside their comfort zone to find ultimate truth and love. The movie Brave teaches family is very important and having the ability to really care and listen to each other is at the heart of being family. Aladdin tells us that you are created to be yourself. Cinderella paints a picture that being unkind gets you nowhere. And despite the odds appearing to be against you, you are meant to choose what s right. Keep your eye on the ultimate prize. The Lion King makes it clear that the destructiveness of envy and the poison of betrayal have fatal consequences. We are taught about loss, regret, and that love in the end is what conquers fear. Moana points to the fact that we will fail at something. So, get over yourself! Mistakes are a part of what will shape you. My favorite Disney movie is Beauty & the Beast. Beauty enters into the troubled world of Beast, not because he was so loveable, not because he deserved her, but because she loved her father. But the world of Beast does not change in one quick moment just because Beauty enters into the picture. Beast s servants (the ones turned into a teapot, time clock & candlestick) tell the angry and mean Beast that Beauty just might be the one they are waiting for to change everything. As much as Beast desires to be rescued, he can t control the darker side of himself, and so, he ends up ignoring their counsel and in a fit of rage, he dismisses Beauty. Wolves then attack Beauty, but Beast for some unknown internal reason won t allow himself to stand by without risking his life for her cause. He incurs injury as a result. In his time of injury though, Beauty doesn t abandon him. Beauty offers him the comfort and healing he needs. Soon though, he gravitates back to his lowness, until in one beautiful moment, Beauty truly enters into the heart of the ugly Beast. It is in that moment Beast begins to change slowly. And, he finally realizes that he loves Beauty. In an amazing display of his new found love, making the hardest choice he has ever had to make, he allows love for another to prevail over selfishness. The choice leads to his immediate loss, but it reveals a capacity for greater love to be received. His decision also allows Beauty to reveal the depth of her love. After responding to her need to save another first, Beauty chooses to return to the ugly world where the Beast still lives. Beauty returns in an effort to lead Beast away from the evil that awaits him. The return does not prevent Beast from being wounded to the point of death though, and all does seem lost, but it is only then that Beauty reveals the depth of her love for Beast. It is then that Beast is completely transformed, transformed by the power of Beauty s love. The final scene reveals this profound mystery about God s love. Beauty entered into the world Beast made ugly, and as a result Beast is changed little by little. In the end he is transformed into something more beautiful than he could have ever imagined. Saving love did enter into our world. And one must choose whether to be transformed by it or not. God s love, made manifest in Jesus is the only thing that can save you and I. Your and my entire identity rests in him and the community you and I choose to hang with will either help to lead us closer to him or it will lead us from him. Page 5

~ Field Agent ~ Think You Are Too Old for Coverage? Maybe Not You are never too young or too old to consider purchasing life insurance. If you have a financial need for coverage, or will in the future, a permanent life insurance policy can be just the thing you need. When you are young and presumably healthy, coverage will be very inexpensive when compared to purchasing the same policies when you are older. If you ve put off purchasing coverage, or you realize that you may need additional insurance, the Order may still be able to help you, even if other companies cannot. In fact, in 2012, the issue age of our permanent life insurance products was extended to age 80. Naturally, your health, and whether or not you smoke, will be taken into consideration, so underwriting standards for risk and age apply, but, the extension is a great blessing for me and it could be for you too. Now I can help members that I couldn t help before. Are you or one of your brother knights one of those members? Whether you re 18 or 80, the Knights of Columbus has products that will work for you and your family. I look forward to discussing coverage with you. Tony LoMonaco, FICF Page 7

Page 9 ~ Chaplain s Corner ~ Msgr. Al Schifano The month of November holds several keys of our faith: All Saints Day, All Souls Day, Thanksgiving and the beginning of Advent, the start of the new liturgical year. Our focus begins with our looking to those who have gone before us. We pray to the Saints in Heaven, celebrating their lofty achievement of eternal presence with God and looking at their lives for help, inspiration and guidance that we might one day join them. We pray for the Souls in Purgatory, asking God to release them and elevate them to Sainthood, recognizing that most likely we will make that journey through Purgatory for what I call The Spiritual Car Wash to scrub away the residue of our forgiven sins and make us ready to see God. We then turn introspectively with the celebration of Thanksgiving calling to mind the many people, gifts, opportunities and blessings we have received in our lifetime, making sure to say Thank You, first and foremost to God and then to anyone and everyone who make us who we are and share in our life s experiences. Lastly, we look forward, as the First Sunday of Advent awakens anew the most amazing event known to all humanity, the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, born as a Child of the Virgin Mary, entering into the humble estate of humanity to love us, teach us, heals us, forgive our sins, die for us and show us the way to eternal life. As we contemplate the wonders of the month of November, take a few minutes to reflect upon and pray Psalm 100, concentrate particularly on the action words highlighted in the Psalm. Let us seek to live those words every day of November and the rest of our lives. PSALM 100 Page 8 A psalm of thanksgiving. Shout joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before him with joyful song. Know that the LORD is God, he made us, we belong to him, we are his people, the flock he shepherds. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name; good indeed is the LORD, His mercy endures forever, his faithfulness lasts through every generation.
