This month should hold a particularly fond place in our hearts since it is the month in which the United States celebrates Columbus Day. Christopher Columbus was born sometime between August 25 and the end of October There is a wonderful biography of this remarkable man entitled: ADMIRAL of the OCEAN SEA. This Pulitzer Prize-winning book goes into great detail of his adventures, but also attempts to reconstruct his voyages as accurately as possible and to assess his ability as a seaman. Even those who do not sail will find the accounts illuminating. Below is a brief excerpt from the book: At the end of the year 1492 most men in Western Europe felt exceedingly gloomy about the future. Christian civilization appeared to be shrinking in area and dividing into hostile units as its sphere contracted. For over a century there had been no important advance in natural science, and registration in the universities dwindled as the instruction they offered became increasingly jejune and lifeless. Institutions were decaying, well-meaning people were growing cynical or desperate, and many intelligent men, for want of something better to do, were endeavoring to escape the present through studying the pagan past. Islam was now expanding at the expense of Christendom. Every effort to recover the Holy Sepulchre at Jerusalem, touchstone of Christian prestige, had been a failure. The Ottoman Turks, after snuffing out all that remained of the Byzantine Empire, had overrun most of Greece, Albania and Serbia; presently they would be hammering at the gates of Vienna. Throughout Western Europe the general feeling was one profound disillusion, cynical pessimism and black despair. [In the midst of all this], a Spanish caravel named Nina scudded before a winter gale into Lisbon, with news of a discovery that was to give old Europe another chance. In a few years we find the mental picture completely changed. Strong monarchs are stamping out privy conspiracy and rebellion; the Church, purged and chastened by the Protestant Reformation, puts her house in order; new ideas flare up throughout Italy, France, Germany and the northern nations; faith in God revives and the human spirit is renewed. The change is complete and astounding. A new envisagement of the world has begun, and men are no longer sighing after the imaginary golden age that lay in the distant past, but speculating as to the golden age that might possibly lie in the oncoming future. I encourage you all to read this informative and well-written book on the man after whom our founder, Fr. Michael J. McGivney, named our great order. Vivat Jesus, Bart Pemberton Grand Knight, Council

All Knighter with Lt. General Thomas Keck Friday, September 28th, we had a fantastic "All-Knighter." Good food, drink, and company were had by all. Thanks to all who attended. Very special thanks goes to our guest speakers, Lt. General Thomas Keck, USAF (retired), and Fr. Kenneth Wolfe. In addition, none of our great food and drink would have happened without the efforts of our "All-Knighter" Chairman, brother Sir Knight Charlie Farnsworth, as well as the other brother Knights who did so much of the preparation for the event: Worthy Past Grand Knight Patrick McMahon, Worthy Brother Sir Knight and Past Faithful Navigator Randy Hannon, Brother Sir Knight Jeff Kennedy, and Worthy Past Grand Knight Dane Armijo (the Knight whose inspiration it was to start the Council tradition of the "All- Knighter" several years ago). POW/ MIA Service at Sts. Peter & Paul Members of our Hughes Assembly 2392 and Council were well represented in a Patriotic Degree POW/MIA table ceremony at SS. Peter & Paul School on September 14, Our council and fellow assembly members included FN Mark Ziska, SK DGK Jim Hackett, and PGK SK Bill Neer (first, third, and fourth in the procession respectively). Knight of the Month Council s Knight of the Month is BK Jeff Kennedy. For years, Brother Jeff has worked behind the scenes to set up prior to our Council and Assembly meetings, as well as tearing down afterwards. He has done this so well for so long that many of us had forgotten that this was the assigned responsibility of the Worthy Warden and Faithful Pilot, respectively. He also worked behind the scenes ensuring that for all of our various functions in the Parish Hall or O Leary Hall that things were set up properly. Now that Brother Jeff is retired from his duties at St. Thomas, he will no longer always be available to assist in these matters (he gladly will when he can, it just won t be like clockwork going forward). For all of his selfless, quiet, and effective work behind the scenes, BK Jeff Kennedy is our Knight of the Month.
Relentless Love - By: Deacon Ed Sheffer Why did God become Man? Why Jesus? Why the Catholic Church?Would it surprise you if I said the answer to all three of these is so you could be uniquely and repeatedly loved by God? Do you believe that? The thing is one has to be willing to go deep to experience God s love profoundly! I m not referring to a mind bending intellectual journey with Aquinas. I m talking a spiritual and relational journey. There is no going deep without making time for silence. It s in that time set aside for silence that you and God relate. It s in that silence that telling prayer takes place, prayer that doesn t help your relationship with God, but prayer so personal that it is your relationship. My bet is we don t really know how much we are loved. Have you anchored everything about your life on God s love for you? What are you holding onto just in case this Jesus thing doesn t work out? Everything you and I have in this life, we owe to God. The only thing you and I own is our sin. But here is the thing; it s never really been about you being a good person for God. Virtue absolutely does matter, but not for the reason most people think. Virtue matters most because it frees us to truly be who we were created to be. Virtue frees you to love more like God. What it is really all about is Christ in you, the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27). It s then that we can pick up our cross and follow him. And guess what, we don t get crucified by being complacent and a wimp. We get crucified because we re a threat to the establishment, to what s gone wrong with love in our culture (and sometimes even in our church). But here is the thing, what defines you and I, is not the worst thing we ever did. What does define us is we are a daughter or son of God. What defines you is God loves you. Your challenge is to believe that, to own that, and to live that. In the back center of our nation s currency it says In God We Trust. What does that really mean - candidly, not what we have made it to mean. Trust is ultimately the result of knowing you are loved. Here is the thing we need to acknowledge, we don t know how much God loves us. Let s face the truth; God has given us His only Son (as a father, I can t wrap my head entirely around seeing my child brutally tortured, mocked and hanging on a cross). God has given us His living Word in black and white (the Bible is the starting point for any true understanding of God). God has given us the bread of life the body, blood, soul, and divinity of His Son (there is no life without this John 6:53). What more must God give you and me? Jesus made it clear in Scripture that he came to reveal the Father (Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father - John 14:9). But do you realize the Father has given us everything through His Son, Jesus. To share Jesus is the most loving thing you and I can ever do. Ultimate freedom rests in this. If we truly want to lead others to Jesus, we need to be in relationship with him and learn from him how to love more and more like him, revealing the Father s relentless love. Page 5

~ Field Agent ~ RETIRE WITH THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS During our working lives, there are probably few financial matters we give more thought and attention to than our retirement. We want to make sure that once we finally stop working, we don t have to stop living the way we want to. Retirement income can be a tricky thing to calculate, especially with the changing landscape of federal and employer provided benefits. However, with careful planning and smart decision-making, you can remove much of the financial uncertainty from your retirement years and eliminate the headacheinducing guesswork. The Knights of Columbus can help you establish a plan. With a properly structured retirement annuity from the Knights of Columbus, you can have retirement income that you cannot outlive, guaranteed. It provides peace of mind that most of us hope to achieve. The Knights of Columbus offers a variety of annuity plans that are available to you and your family. All of our annuity plans can be customized so that you can select the best options to fit your retirement needs. Once a Knights of Columbus annuity has been established, the money continues to earn value, before eventually disbursing according to the options you elected. In the United States, we offer traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, and non-qualified plans, which are available as both single premium and flexible premium annuities. In addition to these options, we also offer Tax Sheltered Annuities (TSA) and Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) options. The beauty of Knights of Columbus retirement annuities lies squarely in their simplicity and security; they are fixed in nature and provide long-term accumulation of wealth. Whether you are looking to start a retirement savings program or moving substantial funds into safer waters, the Knights of Columbus offers product options that can help you achieve all of your retirement goals. Our well trained agents are here to help you determine which annuity product options are right for you and your family. They can answer any questions you might have and provide you with specific rules and complete details for each option. Page 7
Page 9 ~ Chaplain s Corner ~ Msgr. Al Schifano The Month of Mary October is one of two months in which our church offers special honor to Mary, Our Blessed Mother. The other is May. It is most fitting and right to honor her during those months. But, the wise will do so the other ten months of the year as well. In fact, as provided for in the Church s liturgical calendar, they would be wise to honor her every Saturday too. The superwise will honor her every day, by praying the rosary daily. There are those of other religions who accuse Catholics of worshipping Mary. They simply misunderstand the difference between worship and honor. We worship God. We honor Mary as we do all saints. However, Mary has primacy of honor, first among saints, because she was chosen to be the Mother of Jesus, the Mother of God. There never was nor ever will be another fully human person like her. Her humanity is second only to Jesus who was both fully human and divine. She had to be the pure unstained vessel, conceived without original sin, through whom Jesus entered the world and took on our humanity. Thus, Mary is rightfully seen as our intercessor with the divine, not only by reason of that holy birth of Jesus but also seen as an ongoing mediator, our Mediatrix, between humanity and divinity, in her role as Queen of Heaven and Mother of us all. After she was bodily assumed into heaven and crowned as its Queen, she has never ceased to intercede for us. She so loves us and, like the ultimate Mother, so craves our salvation that she has appeared many times over the ages, to inspire us, to show her love for us and to guide us. Among the most notable of her churchapproved apparitions, were those at Tepeyac Hill (1531 now Mexico City), Lourdes (1858) and Fatima (1917). With one hand in the hand of her son Jesus, she constantly holds out her other hand, ever ready to draw us to Jesus. Grab it and don t let go. Mary, Queen of Heaven, Pray for us, this month of October and always Page 8
